Avian brood parasites lay their eggs into the nests of other species, which incubate them and raise the chicks until their independence. Despite living their early weeks of life surrounded by heterospecifics, young brood parasites have the ability to recognize and associate to conspecifics after independence. It has been proposed that the initial conspecific recognition develops when a young parasite encounters a unique species-specific signal that triggers the learning of other aspects of the producer of the signal. For cowbirds (Molothrus spp.), this species-specific signal is hypothesized to be the chatter call. Young birds also could express auditory biases, which in some cases lead to discrimination in favor of conspecific songs. Therefore, the perceptual selectivity for chatters might be also present in nestlings. Our aim was to assess if nestlings of the shiny cowbird (M. bonariensis) present a preferential begging response to conspecific chatter calls. We evaluated if they respond more to the parasitic vocalization than host chicks and if they respond more to the chatter than to heterospecific nonhost calls. We tested shiny cowbird chicks reared by chalk-browed mockingbirds (Mimus saturninus) or house wrens (Troglodytes aedon) and host chicks, as control species. We randomly presented to 6-day-old chicks the following playback treatments: (1) conspecific chatter calls, (2) host calls, used as positive controls, and (3) nonhost calls, used as negative control. We measured if chicks begged during the playback treatments and the begging intensity. When responding to the playback of chatter calls, shiny cowbird chicks begged at a higher frequency and more intensively than host chicks. Shiny cowbird chicks reared by mockingbirds begged more intensively to playbacks of conspecific chatter calls than to host calls, while those reared by wrens begged with a similar intensity to playbacks of conspecific chatter and host calls. On the contrary, wren nestlings begged more intensively to playbacks of the wren call than to chatter calls. Mockingbird nestlings did not beg during any treatment. None of the three species begged during the playback of nonhost calls. Our results show that the chatter call produced a preferential begging response in cowbird nestlings, which may be the beginning of a process of conspecific recognition.

Hydrogels are considered good biomaterials for soft tissue regeneration. In this sense, collagen is the most used raw material to develop hydrogels, due to its high biocompatibility. However, its low mechanical resistance, thermal stability and pH instability have generated the need to look for alternatives to its use. In this sense, the combination of collagen with another raw material (i.e., polysaccharides) can improve the final properties of hydrogels. For this reason, the main objective of this work was the development of hydrogels based on collagen and chitosan. The mechanical, thermal and microstructural properties of the hydrogels formed with different ratios of collagen/chitosan (100/0, 75/25, 50/50, 25/75 and 0/100) were evaluated after being processed by two variants of a protocol consisting in two stages: a pH change towards pH 7 and a temperature drop towards 4 °C. The main results showed that depending on the protocol, the physicochemical and microstructural properties of the hybrid hydrogels were similar to the unitary system depending on the stage carried out in first place, obtaining FTIR peaks with similar intensity or a more porous structure when chitosan was first gelled, instead of collagen. As a conclusion, the synergy between collagen and chitosan improved the properties of the hydrogels, showing good thermomechanical properties and cell viability to be used as potential biomaterials for Tissue Engineering.

Visuospatial neglect may interfere with activities of daily living (ADL). Prism adaptation (PA) is one treatment option and may involve two components: recalibration (more strategic) and realignment (more implicit). We examined whether recalibration or realignment is the driving force in neglect rehabilitation using PA. In a randomized controlled trial with two recruitment series and a cross-over design, 24 neglect patients were allocated to a continuous (PA-c) or intermittent (PA-i) PA procedure. During the PA-c condition, goggles were worn without doffing. In the PA-i condition, patients donned goggles twice (first series of patients) or three times (second series) during training to induce more recalibrations. Primary outcome parameters were performance (omissions) on the Apples Cancellation Test and ADL scores. To assess the efficacy of the PA treatment, we compared effect sizes of the current study with those from three groups from previous studies at the same rehabilitation unit: (1) a passive treatment with a similar intensity, (2) a placebo treatment with a similar intensity, and (3) a PA treatment with fewer therapy sessions. Treatment conditions did not significantly predict scores on primary and most secondary outcome parameters. However, the spontaneous ipsilesional body orientation improved only in patients receiving the PA-i condition and this improvement also appeared in patients showing a strong after-effect (irrespective of condition). Effect sizes for the Apples Cancellation Test and the Functional Independence Measure were larger for both PA treatment protocols than the historical control groups. We conclude that more recalibrations during an intermittent PA treatment may have a beneficial effect on spontaneous body orientation but not on other aspects of neglect or on ADL performance.Clinical Trial Registration: German Clinical Trials Register, identifier: DRKS00018813, DRKS00021539.

A compact KTA cascaded Raman system driven by a passively Q-switched Nd:YAG/Cr4+:YAG laser at 1064 nm was demonstrated for the first time. The output spectra with different cavity lengths were measured. Two strong lines with similar intensity were achieved with a 9 cm length cavity. One is the first-Stokes at 1146.8 nm with a Raman shift of 671 cm−1, and the other is the Stokes at 1178.2 nm with mixed Raman shifts of 234 cm−1 and 671 cm−1. At the shorter cavity length of 5 cm, the output Stokes lines with high intensity were still at 1146.8 nm and 1178.2 nm, but the intensity of 1178.2 nm was higher than that of 1146.8 nm. The maximum average output power of 540 mW was obtained at the incident pump power of 10.5 W with the pulse repetition frequency of 14.5 kHz and the pulse width around 1.1 ns. This compact passively Q-switched KTA cascaded Raman laser can yield multi-Stokes waves, which enrich laser output spectra and hold potential applications for remote sensing and terahertz generation.

The present study is devoted to the combined experimental and theoretical description of the photophysical properties and photodegradation of the new boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) derivatives obtained recently for biomedical applications, such as bacteria photoinactivation (Piskorz et al., Dyes and Pigments 2020, 178, 108322). Absorption and emission spectra for a wide group of solvents of different properties for the analyzed BODIPY derivatives were investigated in order to verify their suitability for photopharmacological applications. Additionally, the photostability of the analyzed systems were thoroughly determined. The exposition to the UV light was found first to cause the decrease in the most intensive absorption band and the appearance of the hypsochromically shifted band of similar intensity. On the basis of the chromatographic and computational study, this effect was assigned to the detachment of the iodine atoms from the BODIPY core. After longer exposition to UV light, photodegradation occurred, leading to the disappearance of the intensive absorption bands and the emergence of small intensity signals in the strongly blue-shifted range of the spectrum. Since the most intensive bands in original dyes are ascribed to the molecular core bearing the BF2 moiety, this result can be attributed to the significant cleavage of the BF2 ring. In order to fully characterize the obtained molecules, the comprehensive computational chemistry study was performed. The influence of the intermolecular interactions for their absorption in solution was analyzed. The theoretical data entirely support the experimental outcomes.

Background Parasternal intercostal is an obligatory inspiratory muscle working in coordination with the diaphragm, apparently sharing a common pathway of neural response. This similarity has attracted clinical interest, promoting parasternal as a non-invasive alternative to the diaphragm, to monitor central neural respiratory output. However, this role may be confounded by the distinct and different functions of costal and crural diaphragm. Given the anatomic location, parasternal activation may significantly impact chest wall via both mechanical shortening or as a "fixator" for the chest wall. Either mechanical function of parasternal may also impact differential function of costal and crural. Objectives During eupnea and hypercapnia, 1) compare the intensity of neural activation of parasternal, with costal and crural diaphragm; 2)examine parasternal recruitment and changes in mechanical action during progressive hypercapnia, including muscle baseline length and shortening. Methods In 30 spontaneously breathing canines, awake without confounding anesthetic, we measured directly both electrical activity of parasternal, costal, and crural diaphragm, and corresponding mechanical shortening of parasternal, during eupnea and hypercapnia. Results During eupnea and hypercapnia, parasternal and costal diaphragm share a similar intensity of neural activation, while both differ significantly from crural diaphragm activity. The shortening of parasternal increases significantly with hypercapnia, without change in baseline end-expiratory length. Conclusion Parasternal shares an equivalent intensity of neural activation with costal, but not crural, diaphragm. Parasternal maintains and increases its active inspiratory shortening during augmented ventilation, despite high levels of diaphragm recruitment. Throughout hypercapnic ventilation, parasternal contributes mechanically - it is not relegated to chest wall fixation.

Temperature and composition at fumaroles are controlled by several volcanic and exogenous processes that operate on various time-space scales. Here, we analyze fluctuations of temperature and chemical composition recorded at fumarolic vents in Solfatara (Campi Flegrei caldera, Italy) from December 1997 to December 2015, in order to better understand source(s) and driving processes. Applying the singular spectral analysis, we found that the trends explain the great part of the variance of the geochemical series but not of the temperature series. On the other hand, a common source, also shared by other geo-indicators (ground deformation, seismicity, hydrogeological and meteorological data), seems to be linked with the oscillatory structure of the investigated signals. The informational characteristics of temperature and geochemical compositions, analyzed by using the Fisher–Shannon method, appear to be a sort of fingerprint of the different periodic structure. In fact, the oscillatory components were characterized by a wide range of significant periodicities nearly equally powerful that show a higher degree of entropy, indicating that changes are influenced by overlapped processes occurring at different scales with a rather similar intensity. The present study represents an advancement in the understanding of the dominant driving mechanisms of volcanic signals at fumaroles that might be also valid for other volcanic areas.

<b><i>Introduction:</i></b> Over time, there have been different views regarding the verbal auditory hallucinations (VAHs) reported by borderline personality disorder (BPD) and schizophrenia patients. More recently, their similarity has been emphasized, a view that undoubtedly has significant implications in terms of differential diagnosis and management. To explore this important issue, we undertook a detailed phenomenological assessment of persistent VAH reported by BPD and schizophrenia DSM-IV participants. <b><i>Methods:</i></b> The Psychotic Symptoms Rating Scale (PSYRATS), the Revised Beliefs About Voices Questionnaire (BAVQ-R), the Multidimensional Scale for Hallucinations (MSH), and a detailed clinical interview were administered to 11 BPD and 10 schizophrenia DSM-IV participants. <b><i>Results:</i></b> The VAHs of both groups were similar regarding intensity, reported as located inside or outside the head, and frequency in which they were described as a third-person phenomenon. However, the patients’ stance towards their VAH was clearly different. Whilst BPD patients identified them in a clear way in terms of gender and age and disliked them, schizophrenia patients identified them more vaguely, reported them both as more disruptive but at the same time engaged with them more positively; schizophrenia patients also integrated their VAH more into delusions. <b><i>Discussion:</i></b> Whilst reporting similar intensity of their VAH, the 2 groups’ stance towards them were strikingly different in that BPD participants regarded them as identifiable and unequivocally unpleasant whilst schizophrenia participants regarded them in a rather vague and ambiguous manner. Methodologically, this preliminary study suggests that in-depth phenomenological assessment can help to elucidate the differential diagnosis of VAH in these, possibly other, clinical groups. Further research is warranted to establish whether these preliminary findings are replicated on a bigger clinical sample.

Abstract Background Mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) is a family of acquisition techniques producing images of the distribution of molecules in a sample, without any prior tagging of the molecules. This makes it a very interesting technique for exploratory research. However, the images are difficult to analyze because the enclosed data has high dimensionality, and their content does not necessarily reflect the shape of the object of interest. Conversely, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans reflect the anatomy of the tissue. MRI also provides complementary information to MSI, such as the content and distribution of water. Results We propose a new workflow to merge the information from 2D MALDI–MSI and MRI images. Our workflow can be applied to large MSI datasets in a limited amount of time. Moreover, the workflow is fully automated and based on deterministic methods which ensures the reproducibility of the results. Our methods were evaluated and compared with state-of-the-art methods. Results show that the images are combined precisely and in a time-efficient manner. Conclusion Our workflow reveals molecules which co-localize with water in biological images. It can be applied on any MSI and MRI datasets which satisfy a few conditions: same regions of the shape enclosed in the images and similar intensity distributions.
