The paper brings some new knowledge on air quality deterioration as a part of urban environment in Prague and Brno in the end of the 18th and in the 19th centuries. The impact of man-induced processes on the creation of specific features of urban climate is documented.

We investigated how evaluation standards employed in performance tests affect the impact of performance goals (here: focused on appearance) on academic cheating. Thereby, we assumed that appearance goals would only lead to increased cheating if students’ performance was presumably evaluated based on results rather than on strategies applied to solve the questions. 169 university students (68.6% female) participated in an experimental design with 2 (induced appearance goals versus no goal induction) x 2 (process-based versus result-based evaluation standards) between-subject conditions. We assessed cheating using a confederate student observing participants’ behaviors and by measuring whether participants reported that they solved unsolvable questions. Confirming our hypotheses, we found that students were only more likely to cheat when appearance goals were induced and the evaluation standard focused on the results. This new knowledge helps to explain mixed findings regarding how performance goals affect cheating and provides opportunities to reduce cheating in high-stakes testing situations.

The article investigates the rather new educational phenomenon – about twenty years ago under the impact of educational reform the theatre subject teaching was introduced. In many neighbor’s countries there is no such separate theatre subject still yet. The focus of the article is on the relationships between the curricula of theatre subject (2008, 2001) and the practice of long-lived non-formal education of children and youth of Lithuania. The curricula of theatre subject were prepared according to comprehensive discipline-arts education conception formed in United States of Amerika. Taking into account the notion of M. Lukšienė, that experience of other cultures, as well as the educational innovations must be adopted according to “own cultural model”, the attention is paid to analysis how curricula of theatre subject are grounded on traditions of Lithuanian non-formal education, especially its artistic trend. The self-expression paradigm or psychological trend of theatre education is less evident in our context. The roots of artistic trend are in Jesuit’s school theatre that existed in Lithuania 1570–1843. The artistic trend was recreated at the end of 20th century in non-formal theatre education in Lithuania by relaying on the professional theatre pedagogy (the training of professional theatre pedagogues started, the first books of methodology of theatre education appeared). Analysis showed that common concepts, as “theatre” and “education through theatre” are those which relate artistic trend of non-formal theatre education with curricula of theatre subject, accordingly, which are grounded on discipline-based art education conception. Especially that is clear from the revealing of content of “education through theatre” concept and explaining its formative and cognitive impacts on children and youth who are acting the roles created by dramaturge. The biggest challenge related with coming of theatre subject as separate, is the creating of theatre knowledge appropriated for school children. Now the theatre subject curricula describe the knowledge which are known in professional theatre pedagogy and in artistic trend of non-formal theatre education, but only in part. Thy must be expanded by new knowledge which will be get by way of externalization from direct practice. Also, there is a need of artistic orientation of theatre didactics – that can guarantee the succession of the best traditions of Lithuanian‘s theatre education and encourage their development.

Research is defined as an activity that creates new knowledge. This is often misunderstood in the engineering community as necessarily requiring a scientific contribution that advances the theory of some matter related to engineering materials or processes. Consequently, typical engineering research projects investigate physical phenomena thought likely to be interesting in potential applications or to describe the characteristics of processes used in engineering work. The results of such projects provide a fragmented, abstracted view of the phenomena investigated, which is difficult to use in engineering decision making related to contextualised situations. This chapter shows how the actual design of engineered artefacts is research because it provides knowledge of the impact of the integration of various elements of existing knowledge, which demonstrates the properties of the designs achieved through the design work and leads to discovery of solutions to the various challenges of integration discovered through the project which attempts to achieve the integration.

Abstract Conversion coatings are used to inhibit corrosion on aluminum structures while maintaining electrical conductivity. The most common type of conversion coatings in aerospace applications (MIL-DTL-5541 Type I), contain hexavalent chromium compounds as the corrosion-inhibiting additive. These Type I conversion coatings have a long pedigree and are highly effective in preventing corrosion; however, the hexavalent chromium compounds in these coatings are carcinogenic and water-soluble. Therefore, the use of these compounds is highly regulated in order to protect both workers and the public leading to high cost in both use and disposal. In addition to these regulations, use of these materials on new designs for DOD is prohibited by DFARS 48 CFR Parts 223 and 252, and is scheduled to be prohibited in Europe in September 2017 by REACH regulations. In response, new more environmentally friendly non-hexavalent chromium-based processes are becoming available. Coatings resulting from these types of processes are referred to as MIL-DTL-5541 Type II conversion coatings. The long term reliability and performance impacts resulting from the use of these coatings are not fully understood and there currently is an effort in the aerospace industry organized by NASA to fully define these impacts while hardware is still in the design stage. While significant work has been performed to define the corrosion performance of various type-II conversion coatings, there has been minimal work performed to quantify the impact a type-II conversion coating would have on RF electrical assemblies. Of particular interest is the impact a conversion coating can have on microwave loss at higher frequencies. Many RF electrical assemblies use aluminum radiator and waveguide structures to transfer energy between components and radiate into freespace. If microwave losses increase due to a change in conversion coating, there could be negative impacts to key performance parameters such as system sensitivity, dynamic range, noise figure, and radiated power. Understanding this impact is critical in determining whether the design change impact is isolated only to the conversion coating or whether it propagates to other subcomponents to compensate for the loss in performance. The standard way to quantify the electrical resistance of conversion coatings is defined by MIL-DTL-81706B. The test involves collecting a DC resistance measurement on a processed panel using a two-probe measurement with 200 psi of pressure applied to the probes. The resulting value is averaged from 10 samples of data collected across the panel. While this test in MIL-DTL-81706B is well defined, it has significant limitations that caused this research to seek another way to quantify this value. First, the repeatability of the two-point probe is not consistent across the panel. Some of the conversion coatings can be brittle and can easily be disturbed by the force applied by the probes. The poor repeatability is exacerbated when the test articles are environmentally exposed, leaving a non-uniform surface. Finally, this test methodology is performed at DC, which does not directly quantify the impact of the coating at microwave frequencies due to phenomena such as skin effect and potential plasmonic response. This talk discusses an experiment performed to assess the impact of the use of type-II conversion coatings on microwave loss. In order to assess this impact, a set of precision machined waveguide structures were used as test articles in the experiment. The advantage of using this waveguide-based approach is that it provides a distributed surface to assess the average impact of conversion coatings on surface resistivity. This average resistivity more closely maps to the RF losses seen by microwave systems. In addition, testing the waveguide test article provides a very repeatable test methodology; waveguide technology is very mature from a manufacturing perspective. Also, the waveguide flanges provide a repeatable way to connect to the test article so long as they are masked or cleaned after any potential environmental exposure. Finally, the rectangular shape of the waveguide can be canonically described by a closed form expression, improving understanding of the specific mechanisms leading to the loss. This talk discusses an experiment where multiple 3-foot pieces of WR-28 were used as test articles. The WR-28 test articles were chosen to assess the impact to performance at Ka-band. The 3-foot sections are convenient articles because they can easily be measured on a workbench while at the same time being electrically long at Ka-band (on the order of 100 wavelengths). This talk discusses three different populations of test articles, each coated with a different type of conversion coating. This talk also discusses how an initial measurement of these test articles before environmental exposure showed little difference between these populations. Finally, this talk will discuss plans for environmental testing and in-process RF measurements to be captured during these tests.

This chapter is focused on the challenges of researching gendered violence. Here, the chapter presents the empirical foundation and design of a large-scale national study conducted across Australia; which included a major survey, in-depth interviews, and constructed life histories. This chapter also considers some of the challenges faced when conducting and participating in gendered violence research in the context of the politics of ignorance and sexual politics. Given the risks that can flow from participating in and conducting research into gendered violence, it was particularly vital that the study was tightly conceptualised and methodologically sound, so that the benefits of participation by contributing to the development of new knowledge clearly outweighed any risks. The research study outlined here aimed to reveal the breadth and interconnected nature of the impact of intimate partner violence on women's citizenship as part of challenging wilful ignorance about violence and its relationship to gender inequality. As such, this research was an inherently political project that involved balancing a number of key considerations.

In order to determine if dentist anesthesiologists (DAs) actively contribute to research in the field of anesthesiology, and thus contribute new knowledge to the field, an extensive literature search was accomplished. DAs make up only 1.5% of dentists who actively contribute to anesthesia research but account for 10% of publications. To determine if the impact of DA research was similar to the American Dental Association (ADA) recognized specialties, h-indices of noted researchers in other specialties were compared to the h-indices of noted DA researchers. The results show that the impact of top DA researchers in dental anesthesiology is similar to the impact of top dental specialty researchers, despite lack of academic departments in dental schools where a large percentage of dental research is completed. Dentist anesthesiologists actively contribute to the research in anesthesiology for dentistry and thus, actively contribute to new knowledge in the field.

Objectives ‘Sleeping beauties’, i.e. publications that are not cited for a long while, present interesting findings in science. This study analysed the citation trends of sleeping beauties in paediatric research. Methods The study used bibliometric software to analyse the papers citing sleeping beauties in paediatric research, to understand the context in which paediatric sleeping beauties were finally cited and the impact of these sleeping beauties on paediatric research. Results Two paediatric sleeping beauties, addressing medical homes and the transition from paediatric to adult health care, respectively, awakened in response to organizational needs. Both presented novel concepts of paediatric service organization that became important because of an increased need for optimization of services. Conclusion All sleeping beauties bring new knowledge that becomes important only after several years. Paediatric sleeping beauties exhibited unique characteristics; however, their presence in paediatric research shows that knowledge acquisition in paediatrics resembles that in other disciplines.

The innovativeness of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) is dependent on accessibility to appropriate knowledge resources that enable creation of new market offers. Due to inherent limitations related to the possibilities of investing in the acquisition or creation of new knowledge, smaller entities may benefit from the proximity of large companies, especially multinational corporations, which are actively involved in new knowledge creation, and this knowledge has the ability to spill over. The flow of knowledge from service centres to local smaller companies has the potential to stimulate innovativeness in regional service functions, creating opportunities for paper is to analyse the impact of the flow of knowledge from service centres to MSMEs as a result of interactions between them. For this purpose, empirical data from quantitative research carried out by the research team in 2016 on a representative sample of 1,100 micro small and medium-sized enterprises in the Zachodniopomorskie (West Pomerania) voivodeship were used. The analysis shows that service centres can have a positive impact on the innovativeness of companies in the regions in which they are located, provided that there is a flow of knowledge as a result of direct transfer or personal interactions.

Introduction. Management of competencies of innovative workers in specific conditions of functioning of innovatively active enterprises as producing ecosystems is considered as the dominant direction of managing the process of production of new knowledge, localized within a specific organization, which can increase the consumer value of final consumption goods/services in the process of global value chains’ formation. Aim and tasks. The purpose of the publication is to summarize United Kingdom practices in the management of intellectual resources of innovatively active enterprises. Results. The purpose of the United Kingdom science and innovation policy is to develop the professional skills of the population, to organize world-class research and education, to apply knowledge and skills to develop a competitive economy. The established network of science and innovative policy management entities is in line with the open innovation demand model, which implies the establishment of effective cooperation between universities, business organizations, suppliers, consumers. The generalized model of organizational and economic mechanism of regulation of intellectual resources of innovatively active enterprises personnel as knowledge-intensive sociocentric networks is presented in the form of a structured system focused on the behavioral aspects of the activity of subjects of production of new knowledge of means of regulatory and indicative influence on the configuration of regulatory objects that are subordinated to the sub-system in the conditions of global competition. Conclusions. To fully meet the requirements of innovating the organizational and economic mechanism regulation of intellectual capital’ innovatively active enterprises corresponds to the incorporation into the toolkit of realization of the purpose and tasks of development of the means of forecasting the future state, structure, prospects of increasing the value of its elements. This trend of modernization provides an opportunity to increase intellectual capital through the introduction of Foresight procedures for analysing the impact on it of scientific and technological innovations, formulating and modernizing the mission of forecasting inclusive social capital, comprehensive specification of the regulatory sector, taking into account economic macro and mesoscenarios. At the same time, the proposed means increase the degree of scientific substantiation of the processes of regulation of enterprise development by implementing the analysis of alternative scenarios of intellectual capital growth of innovatively active ecosystems of microeconomic level, open the possibility of developing technological roadmaps for the implementation of targeted programs for long-term research, long-term research development of themes and programs for the implementation of applied social technologies at the request of stakeholders.
