The content of fats, oils, and greases (FOG) in wastewater, as a result of food preparation, both in homes and in different commercial and industrial activities, is a growing problem. In addition to the blockages generated in the sanitary networks, it also represents a difficulty for the performance of wastewater treatment plants (WWTP), increasing energy and maintenance costs and worsening the performance of downstream treatment processes. The pretreatment stage of these facilities is responsible for removing most of the FOG to avoid these problems. However, so far, optimization has been limited to the correct design and initial installation dimensioning. Proper management of this initial stage is left to the experience of the operators to adjust the process when changes occur in the characteristics of the wastewater inlet. The main difficulty is the large number of factors influencing these changes. In this work, a prediction model of the FOG content in the inlet water is presented. The model is capable of correctly predicting 98.45% of the cases in training and 72.73% in testing, with a relative error of 10%. It was developed using random forest (RF) and the good results obtained (R2 = 0.9348 and RMSE = 0.089 in test) will make it possible to improve operations in this initial stage. The good features of this machine learning algorithm had not been used, so far, in the modeling of pretreatment parameters. This novel approach will result in a global improvement in the performance of this type of facility allowing early adoption of adjustments to the pretreatment process to remove the maximum amount of FOG.

For the development of a good evaluation instrument, persons who are involved in the process should follow all the recommended stages (planning, test specification, piloting, removing redundant items). The using of formative assessment in education allows us to conduct such tire as piloting (approbation) that is intended to obtain the statistical parameters of test items, which can be used in a summative assessment. Correct design of test forms for a formative assessment can provide sufficient capabilities for their equating and linking. In this work we are focused only on evaluating just one construct, which is commonly related to only one subject in university curriculum. According to this reason we described a common items equating technique for test items preequating.

The necessity to ensure compliance of scientific articles in Russian scientific journals with international standards for their inclusion in scientometric databases is substantiated. It is shown that the design of the journal, placement and presentation of the necessary elements of articles, completeness of English-language data and other characteristics are determined by the editorial policy and should reflect compliance with the requirements of international databases. The possibility of correct design of articles, interpretation of their elements from the standpoint of international scientometric databases is shown.

The quest to create superconductors with higher transition temperatures is as old as superconductivity itself. One strategy, popular after the realization that (conventional) superconductivity is mediated by phonons, is to chemically combine different elements within the crystalline unit cell to maximize the electron-phonon coupling. This led to the discovery of NbTi and Nb_33Sn, to name just the most technologically relevant examples. Here, we propose a radically different approach to transform a ‘pristine’ material into a better (meta-) superconductor by making use of modern fabrication techniques: designing and engineering the electronic properties of thin films via periodic patterning on the nanoscale. We present a model calculation to explore the key effects of different supercells that could be fabricated using nanofabrication or deliberate lattice mismatch, and demonstrate that specific pattern will enhance the coupling and the transition temperature. We also discuss how numerical methods could predict the correct design parameters to improve superconductivity in materials including Al, NbTi, and MgB_22.

Aqueous alkanolamines solutions are widely used in petroleum refineries to remove acid gases from hydrotreated streams. The knowledge of physical properties in this kind of solutions is useful for the correct design, operation, and control of sweetening processes. Due to the above, we carried out a study on the density of the ternary mixture: 2-Amino-2-Methyl-1-Propanol (AMP) + Diethanolamine (DEA) + Water (H2O). Density was measured by means of the vibrating tube method with an uncertainty of 2×10-4 g·cm-3.  The experimental data was obtained in the entire concentration range, temperatures from 303.15 to 333.15 K, and pressure of 101.3 kPa. In addition, the following three prediction methods were tested to estimate the density of the blend: mixing rule, polynomial correlation, and excess molar volume. The best prediction was obtained by means of the excess molar volume through the Redlich-Kister and Cibulka equations, where an average absolute deviation (AAD) of 0.02%, correlation coefficient (R) of 0.9999, and standard deviation (<s>) of 3×10-4 g·cm-3 were obtained.

The most important activity of wire drawing technology is the correct design of stages geometry. The wire drawing within a roller die is described by an irregular deformation on wire width, strongly connected by the gauge shape between the rollers and cross section wire surface. Free lateral wire surface that has no contact with the roller on the deformation zone obstructs the wire elongation. There is a biunique correspondence between the shape and dimension of wire that enters between the rollers, and the free space between the rollers, corresponding to a specific stage of drawing. This has a great effect on dimensional accuracy of final wire. A drawing zone feature based model, allowed the examination of interaction evolution between wire and rolls geometry. This analysis helps the user of this technology to make a proper change in the arrangement and position of wire entering between rolls, or in the rolls configuration.

In this paper the issues associated with correct design of hall buildings has been presented. Large span roof structures require a particularly careful approach to design issues. In this paper examples of two building hall were presented. In the first example, the construction disaster occurred, while in the second of presented buildings due to the changes introduced while construction has been protected against such disaster. The first of the analyzed cause concerns storage hall, whose roof structure has been destroyed due to heavy rainfall. The main cause of this disaster was the malfunction of vacuum roof drainage system compounded by a number of design errors. Mentioned errors were not eliminated, during construction, despite the additional investor supervision, which was independent of parties involved in a construction process. The second case concerns the structure of a sports hall, which was built next to the existing school. Under construction of the hall building, the contractor and the supervision inspector, in conjunction with the designer, introduced a number of modifications of the structure to prevent the disaster. These modifications were a direct result of errors at the design stage, which were eliminated under the construction works. Based on analyzed cases, the scope of diagnostics, which should be performed during the operation of hall buildings with large roof areas, was determined.

SummaryThe correct design of intermediate vertical stiffeners on web plates subjected to shear becomes very important when the web plates are designed to operate at loads close to their buckling loads. This paper presents details of an extensive series of tests conducted on stiffened web plates subjected to shear. From the analysis of the results obtained from these tests, new empirical relationships between the flexural rigidity and spacing of the intermediate stiffeners and the buckling stress of the stiffened web plate have been obtained. One interesting and important feature of these new relationships is that they define more clearly than hitherto the difference in the behaviour of single-and double-sided stiffeners.

The coupling of a sirocco fan, used to supply air to a mist sprayer, and a Diesel engine is studied in order to enhance the performance of the integrated system. In this case, the main problem for the correct design of the fan arises from the fact that it is not possible to define a priori the operating point. In fact, the rotational speed is not fixed as in the case of an electric motor driven fan, but is determined as an equilibrium of the power supplied by the engine and the power absorbed by the fan to recover the pressure drops of the mist sprayer system. In this paper, the experimental campaign performed to characterize the existent fans is presented. Moreover, the sprayer duct is characterized by using literature correlations and by performing numerical simulations. Then, the collected data are elaborated in order to scale the fans in order to enhance the performance of the system.
