During a recent investigation concerning the growth of γ' precipitates in nickel-base superalloys it was observed that the sign of the lattice mismatch between the coherent particles and the matrix (γ) was important in determining the ease with which matrix dislocations could be incorporated into the interface to relieve coherency strains. Thus alloys with a negative misfit (ie. the γ' lattice parameter was smaller than the matrix) could lose coherency easily and γ/γ' interfaces would exhibit regularly spaced networks of dislocations, as shown in figure 1 for the case of Nimonic 115 (misfit = -0.15%). In contrast, γ' particles in alloys with a positive misfit could grow to a large size and not show any such dislocation arrangements in the interface, thus indicating that coherency had not been lost. Figure 2 depicts a large γ' precipitate in Nimonic 80A (misfit = +0.32%) showing few interfacial dislocations.

Currently there is a great interest in developing nickel base alloys with fine and uniform dispersion of stable oxide particles, for high temperature applications. It is well known that the high temperature strength and stability of an oxide dispersed alloy can be greatly improved by appropriate thermomechanical processing, but the mechanism of this strengthening effect is not well understood. This investigation was undertaken to study the dislocation substructures formed in beryllia dispersed nickel alloys as a function of cold work both with and without intermediate anneals. Two alloys, one Ni-lv/oBeo and other Ni-4.5Mo-30Co-2v/oBeo were investigated. The influence of the substructures produced by Thermo-Mechanical Processing (TMP) on the high temperature creep properties of these alloys was also evaluated.

A systematic study has been made of the effects of various heat treatments on the microstructures of several experimental high volume fraction γ’ precipitation hardened nickel-base alloys, after doping with ∼2 w/o Hf so as to improve the stress rupture life and ductility. The most significant microstructural chan§e brought about by prolonged aging at temperatures in the range 1600°-1900°F was the decoration of grain boundaries with precipitate particles.Precipitation along the grain boundaries was first detected by optical microscopy, but it was necessary to use the scanning electron microscope to reveal the details of the precipitate morphology. Figure 1(a) shows the grain boundary precipitates in relief, after partial dissolution of the surrounding γ + γ’ matrix.

Recently we have been investigating a class of nickel-base superalloys which possess substantial room temperature ductility. This improvement in ductility is directly related to improvements in grain boundary strength due to increased boundary cohesion through control of detrimental impurities and improved boundary shear strength by controlled grain boundary micros true tures.For these investigations an experimental nickel-base superalloy was doped with different levels of sulphur impurity. The micros tructure after a heat treatment of 1360°C for 2 hr, 1200°C for 16 hr consists of coherent precipitates of γ’ Ni3(Al,X) in a nickel solid solution matrix.

A nickel-base superalloy is essentially a Ni/Cr solid solution hardened by additions of Al (Ti, Nb, etc.) to precipitate a coherent, ordered phase. In most commercial alloy systems, e.g. B-1900, IN-100 and Mar-M200, the stable precipitate is Ni3 (Al,Ti) γ′, with an LI2structure. In A lloy 901 the normal precipitate is metastable Nis Ti3 γ′ ; the stable phase is a hexagonal Do2 4 structure. In Alloy 718 the strengthening precipitate is metastable γ″, which has a body-centered tetragonal D022 structure.Precipitate MorphologyIn most systems the ordered γ′ phase forms by a continuous precipitation re-action, which gives rise to a uniform intragranular dispersion of precipitate particles. For zero γ/γ′ misfit, the γ′ precipitates assume a spheroidal.

The previous paper briefly described the fine microstructure of a mechanically alloyed oxide dispersion strengthened nickel-base solid solution. This note examines the fine microstructure of another mechanically alloyed system. This alloy differs from the one described previously in that it is more generously endowed with coherent precipitate γ forming elements A1 and Ti and it contains a higher volume fraction of the finely dispersed Y2O3 oxide. An interesting question to answer in the comparative study of the creep and stress rupture of these two ODS systems is the role of the precipitate γ' in the mechanisms of creep and stress rupture in alloys already containing oxide dispersoids.The nominal chemical composition of this alloy is Ni - 20%Cr - 2.5%Ti - 1.5% A1 - 1.3%Y203 by weight. The system receives a three stage heat treatment-- the first designed to produce a coarse grain structure similar to the solid solution alloy but with a smaller grain aspect ratio of about ten.

Conventionally cast γ’ precipitation hardened nickel-base superalloys possess well-defined dendritic structures and normally exhibit pronounced segregation. Splat quenched, or rapidly solidified alloys, on the other hand, show little or no evidence for phase decomposition and markedly reduced segregation. In what follows, it is shown that comparable results have been obtained in superalloys processed by the LASERGLAZE™ method.In laser glazing, a sharply focused laser beam is traversed across the material surface at a rate that induces surface localized melting, while avoiding significant surface vaporization. Under these conditions, computations of the average cooling rate can be made with confidence, since intimate contact between the melt and the self-substrate ensures that the heat transfer coefficient is reproducibly constant (h=∞ for perfect contact) in contrast to the variable h characteristic of splat quenching. Results of such computations for pure nickel are presented in Fig. 1, which shows that there is a maximum cooling rate for a given absorbed power density, corresponding to the limiting case in which melt depth approaches zero.

Inconel 718, a precipitation hardenable nickel-base alloy, is a versatile high strength, weldable wrought alloy that is used in the gas turbine industry for components operated at temperatures up to about 1300°F. The nominal chemical composition is 0.6A1-0.9Ti-19.OCr-18.0Fe-3Mo-5.2(Cb + Ta)- 0.1C with the balance Ni (in weight percentage). The physical metallurgy of IN 718 has been the subject of a number of investigations and it is now established that hardening is due, primarily, to the formation of metastable, disc-shaped γ" an ordered body-centered tetragonal structure (DO2 2 type superlattice).

There is considerable technological interest in oxidation of nickel because of the importance of nickel-base superalloys in high-temperature oxidizing environments. NiO scales on nickel grow classically, by outward diffusion of nickel through the scale, and are among the most studied of oxidation systems. We report here the first extensive characterization by transmission electron microscopy of nickel oxide scales formed on bulk nickel substrates and sectioned both parallel and transversely to the Ni/NiO interface.Electrochemically-polished nickel sheet of 99.995% purity was oxidized at 1273 K in 0.1 MPa oxygen partial pressure for times between 5 s and 25 h. Parallel sections were produced using a combination of electropolishing of the nickel substrate and ion-beam thinning of the scale to any desired depth in the scale. Transverse sections were prepared by encasing stacked strips of oxidized nickel sheet in epoxy resin, sectioning transversely and ion-beam thinning until thin area spanning one or more interfaces was obtained.

The “weak-beam” and systematic many-beam techniques are the currently available methods for resolution of closely spaced dislocations or other inhomogeneities imaged through strain contrast. The former is a dark field technique and image intensities are usually very weak. The latter is a bright field technique, but generally use of a high voltage instrument is required. In what follows a bright field method for obtaining enhanced resolution of partial dislocations at 100 KV accelerating potential will be described.A brief discussion of an application will first be given. A study of intermediate temperature creep processes in commercial nickel-base alloys strengthened by the Ll2 Ni3 Al γ precipitate has suggested that partial dislocations such as those labelled 1 and 2 in Fig. 1(a) are in reality composed of two closely spaced a/6 <112> Shockley partials. Stacking fault contrast, when present, tends to obscure resolution of the partials; thus, conditions for resolution must be chosen such that the phase shift at the fault is 0 or a multiple of 2π.
