AbstractThe present study investigates the influence of emotional information on language processing. To this aim, we measured behavioral responses and event-related brain potentials (ERPs) during four Italian lexical decision experiments in which we used emotionally intense and neutral pseudowords—i.e., pseudowords derived from changing one letter in a word (e.g., cammelto, derived from cammello ‘camel’ vs. copezzolo, from capezzolo ‘nipple’)—as stimuli. In Experiment 1 and 2, half of the pseudowords were emotionally intense and half were neutral, and were mixed with neutral words. In Experiment 3, the list composition was manipulated, with ¼ of the pseudowords being derived from emotionally intense words and ¾ derived from neutral words. Experiment 4 was identical to Experiment 1, but ERPs were recorded. Emotionally intense pseudowords were categorized more slowly than neutral pseudowords, with the difference emerging both in the mean and at the leading edge of the response times distribution. Moreover, emotionally intense pseudowords elicited smaller N170 and N400 than neutral pseudowords. These results speak in favor of a fast and multi-level infiltration of the emotional information into the linguistic process of word recognition.

The kihapis a technique used in several oriental martial arts. It is a yell used by practitioners with the ex pectation of enhancing the force of a hit. However, the real effect of using the kihapis unknown. Therefore, this study aims to compare the peak of acceleration of the Dolio-chaguikick in taekwondo performed with and without the use of kihap. Twenty two experienced taekwondo practitioners performed 30 kicks each against a punching bag, alternating in random order with and without kihap, while the acceleration of the punching bag was measured. A t-test was used to compare the difference between the mean acceleration in both conditions. Higher values were found with the use of kihap(7.8 ± 2.8 g) than without the use of kihap(7.1 ± 2.4 g), p< 0.01, r= 0.57. The results indicate that kihapenhances the impact of the kick.

In addition to assessing the absolute performance of animals, the impact of certain technological approaches, breeding influence and other external organized factors on the consolidation of pigs groups on certain grounds should be evaluated. Breeding consolidation is a desirable breeding process that is realized through more motivated consolidation of intra-breeding structural units for maintaining a significant level of intergroup differentiation and variability. If the issue relates to the rearing young animals that are introduced into the herd, this is the most urgent issue that needs to be monitored. The purpose of the research is to determine the consociality of the main signs of reproductive ability of the gilts, which are checked at different rates of artificial insemination of sows of the main herd. The research was carried out at the Shubs`ke farm in the Bogoduhivsky District of Kharkiv Oblast at the pig farm for the pure breeding of the Welsh breed pigs (breeding reproductive status from 2014). In order to evaluate the optimal multiplicity (from single to triple), a gilts with a total of 30 heads was selected. The main indicators of reproductive ability of gilts (multiplicity, weight of nest at birth and excommunication and keeping piglets before weaning on day 28) were evaluated. Recalculation on the weight of the litter at weaning at the weight of the nest at extermination in 60 days was carried out in accordance with the current instruction on the boning of pigs. The results of researches were worked out according to traditional methods by the method of variation statistics. Consolidation of individual indicators of reproductive capacity of gilts was calculated to the total number of evaluated animals. In the previous stage of the research, it was found that the use of multiple insemination of gilts compared to single insemination is positively reflected at the level of their reproductive ability. A decrease in the percentage of non-productive inseminants in animal groups has been established. Triple insemination of gilts allows for 1.14 piglets to be obtained more compared to single insemination of the same pigs (p < 0.01). Also, for three times insemination of gilts, in comparison with single insemination, larger nest for weaning were obtained (by 14.24 kg, converted to 60th day p < 0.01). At the same time, the reduction in the keeping of piglets to weaning for increase frequency of insemination of gilts. According to the multiplicity of gilts, the most consolidated level of symptoms per group was obtained for single insemination. Increasing the multiplicity of insemination negatively affected the consolidation of the multiplicity of the piglets (as for determining the coefficients of phenotypic consolidation due to the mean square deviation, so, and for determining the coefficient of variability). The least consolidated in terms of multiplicity were uterus for double insemination. It should also be noted that there is little difference, in general, on the indicators of the theonotypical consolidation of the multiplicity of piglets between different groups of animals. So this difference between the most contrasting groups was 0.447 points for determining the coefficients due to the mean square deviation and 0.397 points for the determination due to the coefficient of variability, respectively. By weight of the same litters at birth, the most consolidated group was gilts, which was inseminated twice. The least consolidated are trimmed three times, respectively. The difference as a whole, according to the indicators of the theonotype consolidation of the mass of the litter’s piglets at birth, between different groups of pigs was even smaller. The difference between the most contrasting groups was 0.270 points for determining the coefficients due to the mean square deviation and 0.260 points for the determination due to the coefficient of variability, respectively. On the basis of the mass of the litter at weaning, the most consolidated level of symptoms was obtained in the group of gilts for triple insemination. The least consolidated group, respectively, was gilts for single insemination. At the same time, on the basis of the weight of the litter at weaning, the slightest differences were obtained after the consolidation of the signs between different groups of pigs. The difference between the most contrasting groups was 0.173 points for determining the coefficients due to the mean square deviation and 0.248 points for the determination due to the coefficient of variation, respectively. At different rates of insemination of gilts, there are no significant differences between the groups between the groups in terms of the consolidation of signs of reproductive ability. Also, there was no clear effect on increasing the multiplicity of insemination of gilts to the consolidation of their signs of reproductive qualities.

Response time (RT) is a critical human factor that influences traffic flow characteristics and traffic safety, and is governed by drivers’ decision-making behavior. Unlike the traditional environment (TE), the connected environment (CE) provides information assistance to drivers. This in-vehicle informed environment can influence drivers’ decision-making and thereby their RTs. Therefore, to ascertain the impact of CE on RT, this study develops RT estimation methodologies for TE (RTEM-TE) and CE (RTEM-CE), using vehicle trajectory data. Because of the intra-lingual inconsistency among traffic engineers, modelers, and psychologists in the usage of the term RT, this study also provides a ubiquitous definition of RT that can be used in a wide range of applications. Both RTEM-TE and RTEM-CE are built on the fundamental stimulus–response relationship, and they utilize the wavelet-based energy distribution of time series of speeds to detect the stimulus–response points. These methodologies are rigorously examined for their efficiency and accuracy using noise-free and noisy synthetic data, and driving simulator data. Analysis results demonstrate the excellent performance of both the methodologies. Moreover, the analysis shows that the mean RT in CE is longer than the mean RT in TE.

This research undertaking aimed to find out the impact of instructional technology in teaching Music. Specifically, it was framed from the following context: 1. What is the mean performance of the controlled group and experimental group after the instructional technology was used in teaching Music?;2. What is the difference in the mean performance of the control group and experimental group after instructional technology was used in Teaching music? ;The researcher employed the experimental research method specifically the between-group design. From the results of the statistical computations, the following were revealed: The experimental group visibly performed better after instructional technology was integrated in teaching music than their control group counterpart. Findings of the study revealed there was a statistically significant differences in the academic achievement between the average mark of the experimental group students and the average mark of the control group students in favor of the experimental group.

This paper demonstrates statistically the impact of PCB manufacturing variations on the characteristic impedance. Moreover, it shows that the characteristics of the PCBs vary across different suppliers. These differences cannot be tolerated in some applications where the characteristic impedance is restricted to be within a specific range. We sampled 3 × 20 PCBs, each batch of twenty is ordered from a different manufacturer. The sampling consist of measuring the phase shift between the reected and the incident signals when injecting a 180 MHz sinewave into a PCB trace. The trace is selected to be the same for all samples. All the PCBs are ordered to be identical and designed for 50 Ω devices. Our conclusion was drawn after running the T-tests to assess statistically the significance of the difference occurring between the PCBs. Based on the computed P-values all the three batches are different from each other in the mean of the measured phase shift with 95 % confidence. The difference between the measured and the expected characteristic impedance is found as 3 %, 10 % and 20 % for these three manufacturers. We also witnessed board-to-board variations even within the same batch and from the same supplier due to the process instability by looking at the probability density of having the same phase shift that is equal to the mean. Some samples shown 2.6 % to 3.5 % difference above the mean.

&lt;p&gt;(596) Scheila was observed to have an active appearance as a result of impact event in late 2010. In additional the coma feature, the shape of light curve had been found the difference probably fresh material or surface properties changed around the impact site. In this study, we present the results of our monitoring observations obtained in 2014 and 2019-2020. The mean values of the color indices (B&amp;#8722;V&amp;#160;= (0.75 &amp;#177; 0.08)&lt;sup&gt;m&lt;/sup&gt;,&amp;#160;V&amp;#8722;R&amp;#160;= (0.45 &amp;#177; 0.04)&lt;sup&gt;m&lt;/sup&gt;, and&amp;#160;R&amp;#8722;I&amp;#160;= (0.44 &amp;#177; 0.09)&lt;sup&gt;m&lt;/sup&gt;) agree well with the values for asteroids of the D-types. The rotation period of the asteroid estimated from photometric observations in 2014 is 15.8 &amp;#177; 0.1 h.&amp;#160;The shape of the light curve is similar as that found after impact event. Furthermore, we did not find any rotational color variability in B-V, V-R and R-I diagrams, meaning the observed surface in this observing period of 2019-2020 is homogeneous.&lt;/p&gt;

Background: Measurement of blood pressure (BP) is done poorly because of both human and machine errors.Aim: To assess the difference between BP recorded in a pragmatic way and that recorded using standard guidelines; to assess differences between wrist- and mercury sphygmomanometerbased readings; and to assess the impact on clinical decision-making.Setting: Royal Swaziland Sugar Corporation Mhlume hospital, Swaziland.Method: After obtaining consent, BP was measured in a pragmatic way by a nurse practitioner who made treatment decisions. Thereafter, patients had their BP re-assessed using standard guidelines by mercury (gold standard) and wrist sphygmomanometer.Results: The prevalence of hypertension was 25%. The mean systolic BP was 143 mmHg (pragmatic) and 133 mmHg (standard) using a mercury sphygmomanometer; and 140 mmHg for standard BP assessed using wrist device. The mean diastolic BP was 90 mmHg, 87 mmHg and 91 mmHg for pragmatic, standard mercury and wrist, respectively. Bland Altman analyses showed that pragmatic and standard BP measurements were different and could not be interchanged clinically.Treatment decisions between those based on pragmatic BP and standard BP agreed in 83.3% of cases, whilst 16.7% of participants had their treatment outcomes misclassified. A total of 19.5% of patients were started erroneously on anti-hypertensive therapy based on pragmatic BP.Conclusion: Clinicians need to revert to basic good clinical practice and measure BP more accurately in order to avoid unnecessary additional costs and morbidity associated within correct treatment resulting from disease misclassification. Contrary to existing research,wrist devices need to be used with caution.

Objective.To describe methods to assess the practical impact of risk adjustment for central line-days on the interpretation of central line–associated bloodstream infection (BSI) rates, because collecting these data is often burdensome.Methods.We analyzed data from 247 hospitals that reported to the adult and pediatric intensive care unit component of the National Nosocomial Infections Surveillance System from 1995 through 2003. For each unit each year, we calculated the percentile error as the absolute value of the difference between the percentile based on a risk-adjusted or more-sophisticated measure (eg, the central line–day rate) and the percentile based on a crude or less-sophisticated measure (eg, the patient-day rate). Using rate per central line–day as the “gold standard,” we calculated performance characteristics (eg, sensitivity and predictive values) of rate per patient-day for finding central line–associated BSI rates higher or lower than the mean. Greater impact of risk adjustment is indicated by higher values for percentile error and lower values for performance characteristics.Results.The median percentile error was ± 7 (ie, the percentile based on central line-days could be 7% higher or lower than the percentile based on patient-days). This error was less than 10 percentile points for 62% of the unit-years, was between 10 and 19 percentile points for 22% of the unit-years, and was 20 percentile points or more for 15% of the unit-years. Use of the rate based on patient-days had a sensitivity of 76% and a positive predictive value of 61% for detecting a significantly high or low central line–associated BSI rate.Conclusions.We found that risk adjustment for central line–days has an important impact on the calculated central line–associated BSI percentile for some units. Similar methods can be used to evaluate the impact of other risk adjustment methods. Our results support current recommendations to use central line–days for surveillance of central line–associated BSI when comparisons are made among facilities.

ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the effect of the extraction of deciduous canines on palatally displaced canines (PDCs), to analyze the impact of the age of the patient on this interceptive treatment, and to assess the outcome of one-sided extraction of a maxillary primary canine on the midline of the maxilla. Materials and Methods: This study included 48 PDCs in 24 consecutive patients with bilateral PDCs. The mean age of the patients at diagnosis was 11.6 years (standard deviation 1.2 years). After randomization, one deciduous canine of each patient was assigned to extraction, and the contralateral side served as control. The patients were then followed at 6-month intervals for 18 months with panoramic and intraoral occlusal radiographs. Results: The rates of successful eruption of the PDCs at extraction and control sites were 67% and 42%, respectively, at 18 months. The difference between the sites was statistically significant, and the effect was significantly more pronounced in the younger participants. A significant decrease in arch perimeter occurred at extraction sites compared to control sites during the observation period. No midline shift toward the extraction side was observed in any patient. Conclusions: The extraction of the deciduous canine is an effective measure in PDC cases, but it must be done in younger patients in combination with early diagnosis, at the age of 10–11 years. Maintenance of the perimeter of the upper arch is an important step during the observation period, and a palatal arch as a space-holding device is recommended.

Abstract This paper extends the previous cloud-resolving modeling study concerning the impact of cloud microphysics on convective–radiative quasi equilibrium (CRQE) over a surface with fixed characteristics and prescribed solar input, both mimicking the mean conditions on earth. The current study applies sophisticated double-moment warm-rain and ice microphysics schemes, which allow for a significantly more realistic representation of the impact of aerosols on precipitation processes and on the coupling between clouds and radiative transfer. Two contrasting cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) characteristics are assumed, representing pristine and polluted conditions, as well as contrasting representations of the effects of entrainment and mixing on the mean cloud droplet size. In addition, four sets of sensitivity simulations are also performed with changes that provide a reference for the main simulation set. As in the previous study, the CRQE mimics the estimates of globally and annually averaged water and energy fluxes across the earth’s atmosphere. There are some differences from the previous study, however, consistent with the slightly lower water vapor content in the troposphere and significantly reduced lower-tropospheric cloud fraction in current simulations. There is also a significant reduction of the difference between the pristine and polluted cases, from ∼20 to ∼4 W m−2 at the surface from ∼20 to ∼9 W m−2 at the top of the atmosphere (TOA). The difference between the homogeneous and extremely inhomogeneous mixing scenarios, ∼20 W m−2 in the previous study, is reduced to a mere 2 (1) W m−2 at the surface (TOA). An unexpected difference between the previous and current simulations is the lower Bowen ratio of the surface heat flux, the partitioning of the total flux into sensible and latent components. It is shown that most of the change comes from the difference in the representation of rain evaporation in the subcloud layer in the single- and double-moment microphysics schemes. The difference affects the mean air temperature and humidity near the surface, and thus the Bowen ratio. The differences between the various simulations are discussed, contrasting the process-level approach with the impact of cloud microphysics on the quasi-equilibrium state with a more appropriate system dynamics approach. The key distinction is that the latter includes the interactions among all the processes in the modeled system.
