AbstractWhile a growing literature studies the effects of climate change on international migration, still only relatively little is known about the individual mechanisms linking migration decisions to climate change. We argue that climate change literacy (i.e., knowledge about climate change) is a major determinant of why some individuals consider migrating to other countries in response to climate change effects. In particular, climate change literacy helps individuals translate their perceptions of temperature changes into an understanding of these changes’ irreversible long-term consequences. We test this hypothesis using highly accurate geo-coded data for 37,000 individuals across 30 African countries. We show that climate change indeed leads to stronger migration intentions among climate literates only. Furthermore, we show that climate change only increases migration intentions among climate literates when it is approximated by long-run increases in local temperatures, but not when operationalized as changing heat wave or precipitation patterns. Further analyses show that climate literates are more likely to live in urban areas, have a higher news consumption, are highly educated, and have demanding occupations. Consequently, climate change may further deprive affected countries of valuable talent.

Africa’s urbanization rate has increased steadily over the past three decades and is reported to be faster than in any other region in the world . It is estimated that by 2030, over half of the African population will be living in urban areas . But the nature of Africa’s urbanization and subsequent form of cities is yet to be critically analyzed in the context of city authorities’ readiness to address the challenges . Evidence is also suggesting that urbanization in African countries is increasingly associated with the high economic growth that has been observed in the last two decades . Both underlying and proximate drivers are responsible for the urbanization, and these include population dynamics, economic growth, legislative designation, increasing densities in rural centers, as well as the growth of mega cities such as Lagos, Cairo and Kinshasa, that are extending to form urban corridors . With the opportunities of urbanization in Sub–Saharan Africa, there are also challenges in the development and management of these cities . Those challenges include provision of social services, sustainable economic development, housing development, urban governance, spatial development guidance and environmental management, climate change adaptation, mitigation and disaster risk reduction . The challenge involves dealing with the development and infrastructure deficit, in addition to required adaption to and mitigation of climate change . This paper examines the current state of urban management in Africa .

This paper analyzes whether migration is an adaptation strategy that households employ to cope with climate in Nigeria. We estimate our model using the cross-sectional variation in climate and long-term migration decisions because we are interested in the average response to long-term climatic conditions. For households that operate farms, we find that the relationship between climate and migration is nonlinear. In particular, climates closer to ideal farming conditions are associated with a higher propensity to migrate, whereas in the least favorable climatic conditions, the propensity to migrate declines. The marginal effect of rainfall and temperature changes on migration varies by season. We estimate the impact of climate change on the number of migrant households in 2031–2060 and 2071–2100, ceteris paribus. With current population levels, climate change generates between 3.6 and 6.3 million additional migrants, most of them being internal. However, these estimates are not statistically significant.

Linkages between Climate Change, Economic Growth and Poverty Reduction have become increasingly popular in local and international communities. This is due to the fact that we are currently facing pressing issues about climate change and poverty reduction effects in our planet. In this paper an empirical testing of the effects of Climate Change, Economic Growth and Poverty Reduction was carried out. Panel estimation methods of fixed effect, random effect, and panel unit root test-fisher type with trend and constant were applied. From the results, shows that economic growth has a negative and highly significant effect on the growth of poverty in the selected West African countries. Using growth rate of economics as dependent variable, the result shows that growth of poverty is highly significant. The population living in rural areas is significant with growth of poverty and highly significant with growth of food security. The policy recommendation is that the government of the west African countries should put in place strategies to reduce poverty, climate change effects on economics growth by following measures; to have strong institution and avoidance of corruption.Such strategies contain to counter climate change effects and increase the resilience of the economy, society and country in general.

Urban areas are amongst the most adversely affected regions by current and future climate change effects. One issue when it comes to measuring, for example, impacts, vulnerabilities, and resilience in preparation of adaptation action is the abundance of conceptual frameworks and associated definitions. Frequently, those definitions contradict each other and shift over time. Prominently, in the transition from the IPCC AR (International Panel on Climate Change Assessment Report) 4 to the IPCC AR 5, a number of conceptual understandings have changed. By integrating common concepts, the literature review presented intends to thoroughly investigate frameworks applied to assess climate change effects on urban areas, creating an evidence base for research and politically relevant adaptation. Thereby, questions concerning the temporal development of publication activity, the geographical scopes of studies and authors, and the dominant concepts as applied in the studies are addressed. A total of 50 publications is identified following screening titles, abstracts, and full texts successively based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Major findings derived from our literature corpus include a recently rising trend in the number of publications, a focus on Chinese cities, an imbalance in favor of authors from Europe and North America, a dominance of the concept of vulnerability, and a strong influence of the IPCC publications. However, confusion regarding various understandings remains. Future research should focus on mainstreaming and unifying conceptual frameworks and definitions as well as on conducting comparative studies.

The prime purpose of the paper is to examine and identify the determinants of responsible consumption behaviour by synthesizing the determinants’ structure as available in varied literature. Further, it profiles responsible consumers according to their identified categories of determinants. Content analysis is exercised on wide literature of more than one hundred research papers, articles and reports that narrate, characterize and profile responsible consumers. The identified demography of the responsible consumers includes: females, young, highly educated, academically intelligent, non-business academics, employed in high-status and leadership positions, members of small families and married with children living at home. According to sociological features, responsibles are the children of highly educated parents, get full support from their family, have liberal and democratic political views and hold time and availability to contribute for responsible acts. Viewing from an economic and geographic perspective, these consumers are average in income, satisfied with their income levels, not much wealthier and majority of them lives in urban areas and larger cities. The cultural features support them as collectivists with feeling of universalism. These consumers trust others, open to change, believe in civic-cooperation, like fun, have a network as members of environmental organizations, religious with extreme religiosity and love their country having highest national pride. As far as psychological features are concerned, they originate from a very good psyche, are initiators, internally controlled living indulgent lifestyles, future minded, less sceptic with high civic sense, creative, have harmony and believe in self efficacy. They are also environmentally concerned and settle in balance with nature. The paper will direct marketers in locating and serving the desired segment of responsible consumers. Information on various segmentation dimensions will facilitate easy policy making for STP model and favourable segmentation strategy formulation. The findings in the paper are based on the results of various studies which may be applicable only on the population similar to sample frame of the individual studies. Future researchers thus get a cue for a more refine research to supplement and enlarge the present inference of responsible consumer segments to disparate markets. The paper synthesizes vast varied literature for the first time in an evolving field of responsible consumption behavior. The outcome will provide base in theory formulation.

This study examined how the regional manifestations of climate change effects and students’ involvement in various climate-related clubs and activities influenced their knowledge and awareness of climate change. Key knowledge gaps and their implications for climate action were also examined. A cross-sectional survey was adopted for the study whilst a snowball sampling technique was used to select the respondents. A total of 300 students from 26 African countries participated in the survey. Descriptive statistics, relative importance index (RII) method and the chi-square test of independence were used to analyze the data. Results showed that regional manifestations of climate change effects and students’ involvement in climate change-related workshops and campaigns significantly influenced their knowledge levels whilst their membership of climate-related student clubs had no significant influence. Key knowledge gaps with regards to how factors such as meat consumption and waste generation could lead to climate change were also identified. Students were also less knowledgeable about how climate change affects key issues such as conflicts, gender inequalities and job insecurity. Intensification of climate change education beyond the most common causes and effects is highly recommended among the youth. Various environment-related student clubs are also encouraged to tailor their activities in this direction.

Africa is becoming the second most populous continent and several of Africa’s countries the most populous on the planet, after India and China. This surge of people will explode Africa’s cities, cause a massive youth bulge, and demand that African countries attract investors, create jobs, and cope with the social consequences of a median age under thirty. Meanwhile, Islam will spread and so will Pentecostal Christian sects. Inter-religious, inter-ethnic, and anomic conflicts will arise amid the spread of climate change effects such as drought, floods, and rising coastal waters. Africans will need to be resilient in the face of natural as well as demographic challenges.

The paper is concerned with settlement system transformation in response to transport speed increase and changing the conditions of commuting. The article discusses the role of the individual spatial mobility as a part of settlement structure by the example of directions from Moscow to Tver’, Nizhny Novgorod, Orel, Belgorod, Kursk, where projects of significant railroad speed increase were operated in the 2010s. Transport accessibility improvement between Moscow and listed regional centers, caused by the launch of regional express trains, changed the spatial behavior of the inhabitants of these regions. The study of settlement structure transformation in response to transport connection speed increase was based on dynamics data of various types of trains passenger flows and the results of sociological surveys of regional express trains passengers. Conclusions are drawn about the role of commuting in the settlement structure and the factors of their transformation, depending on the speed characteristics, existing settlement structure and other geographical characteristics of the territory. The influence of these factors was different on the considered directions. Some of mentioned projects affected intra- (Tver’) and inter-agglomeration mobility (Nizhny Novgorod). Some cities (Oryol, Kursk, Belgorod) are characterized by small effects on commuting due to it’s sensitivity to the distance from Moscow and migration potential.
