In high-voltage (HV) insulation, electrical trees are an important degradation phenomenon strongly linked to partial discharge (PD) activity. Their initiation and development have attracted the attention of the research community and better understanding and characterization of the phenomenon are needed. They are very damaging and develop through the insulation material forming a discharge conduction path. Therefore, it is important to adequately measure and characterize tree growth before it can lead to complete failure of the system. In this paper, the Gaussian mixture model (GMM) has been applied to cluster and classify the different growth stages of electrical trees in epoxy resin insulation. First, tree growth experiments were conducted, and PD data captured from the initial to breakdown stage of the tree growth in epoxy resin insulation. Second, the GMM was applied to categorize the different electrical tree stages into clusters. The results show that PD dynamics vary with different stress voltages and tree growth stages. The electrical tree patterns with shorter breakdown times had identical clusters throughout the degradation stages. The breakdown time can be a key factor in determining the degradation levels of PD patterns emanating from trees in epoxy resin. This is important in order to determine the severity of electrical treeing degradation, and, therefore, to perform efficient asset management. The novelty of the work presented in this paper is that for the first time the GMM has been applied for electrical tree growth classification and the optimal values for the hyperparameters, i.e., the number of clusters and the appropriate covariance structure, have been determined for the different electrical tree clusters.

Silica aerogel/epoxy composite, a kind of efficient thermal insulation material, was prepared by doping silica aerogel of different sizes into epoxy resin through thermocuring process. The results of thermal experiments showed that silica aerogel/epoxy composite had a lower thermal conductivity (0.105W/(m·k) at 60 wt% silica aerogel) and higher serviceability temperature (Martens heat distortion temperature: 160°C at 20 wt% silica aerogel). In addition, the composite doping larger size (0.2-2mm) of silica aerogel particle had lower thermal conductivity and higher Martens heat distortion temperature. Based on the results of SEM and FT-IR, the thermal transfer model was established. Thermal transfer mechanism and the reasons of higher Martens heat distortion temperature have been discussed respectively.

For improving reliable operation of switchgear in power system, an approach for on-line monitoring the insulation characteristic and bus-bar temperature rising of the switchgear is proposed in this paper. Through comparing several existing temperature measurement methods for monitoring temperature rising elevation at bus-bas, a new design of temperature monitoring method is proposed. It adopts quick-magnetic saturated current transformer, temperature sensor and infrared transmission to solve the problem of high voltage isolation. The epoxy resin insulation material which is commonly used in switchgear its aging mechanism data is not complete, seriously restrict on-line monitoring for switchgear, so thousands hours of aging experiment is done on switchgear, systematic study various electrical characteristics variation law on the gradual aging process of epoxy resin insulation materials. Therefore, study on the aging characteristics of switchgearinsulation and its lifetime estimation method is the key technology to understand agingmechanism better, search for new fault diagnostic method and the way to extend theuseful lifetime of switchgear. At last, the system runs in real system and the result shows the on-line monitoring system is stable and reliable which can be provide reference for on-line monitoring system design of switchgear.

The article presents a patent proposition of a composite – sandwich panel made of aerogel mat and a composition of encapsulated phase-change material PCM and epoxy resin modified by glycolysis based on poly(ethylene terephthalate) waste. A multifunctional thermal insulation material with a large heat capacity was obtained. This ability makes it possible to limit the temperature fluctuation in the space encased with the composite. In addition, thanks to the use of aerogel mat, which is characterized by much higher thermal insulation than commonly available materials, it is possible to achieve the assumed thermal resistance using more than two times lower thickness of insulation. The combination of aerogel and resin-PCM makes it possible to give the material virtually any shape. After the hardening process is completed, it has incomparably greater tensile, bending and compression strengths than Styrofoam and mineral wool. These features predispose it for use in situations where high thermal insulation is required while maintaining a low thickness of insulation material and a large thermal capacity of the housing material is indicated, e.g. thin divisions used in passive buildings, window joinery elements, engine compartments and cabin components in vehicles, household appliances etc.

In this paper, SiC/epoxy resin composites containing different amounts of micro-sized SiC with different crystal morphologies were fabricated to study the effects of crystal morphology and temperature on non-linear conductivity characteristics. The research results illustrate that the β-SiC particles can provide a higher non-linear conductivity, compared with the α-SiC particles. The presence of temperature also affected the non-linear conductivity behaviors of the epoxy/SiC composites. When the α-SiC content was low, the non-linear conductivity coefficient of the composites increased rapidly as the temperature increased, but the non-linear conductivity decreased slightly as the temperature increased when the filler concentration was large enough. To reduce the influence of the electric field concentration effect by the increase in power density on the power module packaging, the voltage sharing application of the SiC/epoxy composites was simulated by COMSOL Multiphysics (v5.2a, COMSOL Inc., Stockholm, Sweden). The results show that the composites with non-linear conductivity can reduce the electric field stress. The emerging insulation material obtained by the SiC-modified epoxy resin can effectively promote electric field distribution uniformity, and ensure the safe operation of the power module.

To study the improvement effect of silicone materials on the hygrothermal resistance of epoxy resin and the aging mechanism of silicone-modified insulation materials under hygrothermal conditions, diphenylsilanediol was added to epoxy resin as a modifier in various quantities to synthesize silicone-modified epoxy resin, and a hygrothermal aging test was carried out. Water sorption, surface contact angles and dielectric properties of the insulation material were measured, and scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry (FT-IR) and frequency domain spectroscopy (FDS) were used to analyze the results. The results showed that under 10 wt%, the silicone-modified insulation materials exhibited lower absorption rate and better dielectric properties, including lower dissipation factors and lower dielectric constant during the hygrothermal aging process, while epoxy resin modified with excessive silicone material tend to show worse dielectric performance. Closer analysis found that diphenylsilanediol decreases the size of the cracks within the material during hygrothermal aging, indicating that cracks generated during the hygrothermal aging process may be the reason for the worse dielectric performance, and diphenylsilanediol improves the hygrothermal aging resistance mainly by slowing down the generation and growth rate of cracks. FT-IR results confirmed the existence of hydrolysis and found that the rate of hydrolysis does not change with the content of diphenylsilanediol. FDS results also indicated that modified materials contain less dipoles after hygrothermal aging.

The insulation material epoxy resin mean molecular weight to its solidification electrical performance influence is discussed. In view of the bisphenol A epoxy resin with different mean molecular weights, Finite Element Method (FEM) are introduced and electric field calculation equations are established to calculate the field distribution of basin insulator and its around region in GIS. Representative potential distribution curves are shown. The tangential and normal electric filed intensity maximum of basin insulator is calculated. The positions of electric field intensity maximum are also given.
