Analysis of the impact of flow characteristics on the separation efficiency and pressure drop of a cyclone-type oil separator

The axial rotation of the hydrocyclone affects its internal flow characteristics and separating effect directly, as some local applications require the static hydrocyclone rotates about its own axis. Based on CFD, velocity distribution in the axial rotating hydrocyclone is studied. It is shown that as the rotation speed increasing, the tangential velocity improves and its gradient reduces in free vortex region observably, while the radial velocity has an incremental trend in the section of the small cone. The laboratory experiments are carried out for the static hydrocyclone of disposal capacity of 4 m3/h at 100r/min ∼ 300r/min. The relationships among rotation speed, flowrate, pressure drop and separated efficiency are achieved, which agree well with the numerical simulation results. The results indicate that the disposal capacity of hydrocyclone subjected to the rotation wall can be more flexible than that with no-rotating wall, the scope of best disposal capacity gradually enlarges with the increase of rotation speed of wall. Appropriate rise of the rotation speed is favor of the separation efficiency at the steady flowrate, however the increase of the flowrate and rotation speed induces the growth of the hydrocyclone’s pressure drop correspondingly to some extent.

Abstract The goal of this research is to present an analytical model of nanostructures and study the effects of their geometry on the performance of micro channels. The pressure drop experienced by micro channels is of interest as it presents a limit on forced convection heat transfer. This work will demonstrate how the presence of nanostructures primarily affects pressure drop as well as other cooling flow characteristics. Additional work in the impact of microchannel cross-sectional geometry and friction factor formulation is provided as well. Multiple transient analyses were performed in ANSYS FLUENT to ascertain performance characteristics of microchannels without the presence of hydrophobic nanostructures. The results were compared to the analytical model developed in this study.

A new style single outlet downhole hydrocyclone desander with spiral deflectors was designed according to the working characters of downhole desander, which combined hydrocyclone separation and sediment separation. Numerical simulation was conducted to analysis effect of produced liquid viscosity on flow characteristics and separating property. The results show that the tangential velocity of hydrocyclone desander decreases rapidly and the axial velocity and radial velocity of hydrocyclone desander changes slightly when the produced liquid viscosity changes in the range of 1.5mPa·s ~ 30mPa·s. Separation efficiency drops sharply and pressure drop decreases slightly with the increasing of produced liquid viscosity.

Objective:The rheological properties of oil severely affect the determination of percolation theory, development program, production technology and oil-gathering and transferring process, especially for super heavy oil reservoirs. This paper illustrated the basic seepage morphology of super heavy oil in micro pores based on its rheological characteristics.Methods:The non-linear flow law and start-up pressure gradient of super heavy oil under irreducible water saturation at different temperatures were performed with different permeable sand packs. Meanwhile, the empirical formulas between start-up pressure gradient, the parameters describing the velocity-pressure drop curve and the ratio of gas permeability of a core to fluid viscosity were established.Results:The results demonstrate that temperature and core permeability have significant effect on the non-linear flow characteristics of super heavy oil. The relationship between start-up pressure gradient of oil, the parameters representing the velocity-pressure drop curve and the ratio of core permeability to fluid viscosity could be described as a power function.Conclusion:Above all, the quantitative description of the seepage law of super heavy oil reservoir was proposed in this paper, and finally the empirical diagram for determining the minimum and maximum start-up pressure of heavy oil with different viscosity in different permeable formations was obtained.

Exposing students to hands-on experiments has been a common approach to illustrating complex physical phenomena that have been otherwise modelled solely mathematically. Compressible, isentropic flow in a duct is an example of such a phenomenon, and it is often demonstrated via a de Laval nozzle experiment. We have improved an existing converging/diverging nozzle experiment so that students can modify the location of the normal shock that develops in the diverging portion to better understand the relationship between the shock and the pressure. We have also improved the data acquisition system for this experiment and explained how visualisation of the standing shock is now possible. The results of the updated system demonstrate that the accuracy of the isentropic flow characteristics has not been lost. Through pre- and post-laboratory quizzes, we show the impact on student learning as well.

AbstractFlow distributor located at the beginning of the micromachined pillar array column (PAC) has significant roles in uniform distribution of flow through separation channels and thus separation efficiency. Chip manufacturing artifacts, contaminated solvents, and complex matrix of samples may contribute to clogging of the microfabricated channels, affect the distribution of the sample, and alter the performance of both natural and engineered systems. An even fluid distribution must be achieved cross-sectionally through careful design of flow distributors and minimizing the sensitivity to clogging in order to reach satisfactory separation efficiency. Given the difficulty to investigate experimentally a high number of clogging conditions and geometries, this work exploits a computational fluid dynamic model to investigate the effect of various design parameters on the performance of flow distributors in equally spreading the flow along the separation channels in the presence of different degrees of clogging. An array of radially elongated hexagonal pillars was selected for the separation channel (column). The design parameters include channel width, distributor width, aspect ratio of the pillars, and number of contact zone rows. The performance of known flow distributors, including bifurcating (BF), radially interconnected (RI), and recently introduced mixed-mode (MMI) in addition to two new distributors designed in this work (MMII and MMIII) were investigated in terms of mean elution time, volumetric variance, asymmetry factors, and pressure drop between the inlet and the monitor line for each design. The results show that except for pressure drop, the channel width and aspect ratio of the pillars has no significant influence on flow distribution pattern in non-clogged distributors. However, the behavior of flow distributors in response to clogging was found to be dependent on width of the channels. Also increasing the distributor width and number of contact zone rows after the first splitting stage showed no improvement in the ability to alleviate the clogging. MMI distributor with the channel width of 3 µm, aspect ratio of the pillars equal to 20, number of exits of 8, and number of contact zones of 3 exhibited the highest stability and minimum sensitivity to different degrees of clogging.

The transmission risk of airborne diseases in public transportation systems is a concern. This paper proposes a modified Wells-Riley model for risk analysis in public transportation systems to capture the passenger flow characteristics, including spatial and temporal patterns, in the number of boarding and alighting passengers, and in number of infectors. The model is used to assess overall risk as a function of origin–destination flows, actual operations, and factors such as mask-wearing and ventilation. The model is integrated with a microscopic simulation model of subway operations (SimMETRO). Using actual data from a subway system, a case study explores the impact of different factors on transmission risk, including mask-wearing, ventilation rates, infectiousness levels of disease, and carrier rates. In general, mask-wearing and ventilation are effective under various demand levels, infectiousness levels, and carrier rates. Mask-wearing is more effective in mitigating risks. Impacts from operations and service frequency are also evaluated, emphasizing the importance of maintaining reliable, frequent operations in lowering transmission risks. Risk spatial patterns are also explored, highlighting locations of higher risk.

In this paper, the air flow characteristics and the impact of wind power generators were analyzed according to the porosity and height of the parapet installed in the rooftop layer. The wind speed at the top was decreasing as the parapet was installed. However, the wind speed reduction effect was decreasing as the porosity rate increased. In addition, the increase in porosity significantly reduced turbulence intensity and reduced it by up to 40% compared to no railing. In the case of parapets with sufficient porosity, the effect of reducing turbulence intensity was also increased as the height increased. Therefore, it was confirmed that sufficient parapet height and high porosity reduce the effect of reducing wind speed by parapets and significantly reducing the turbulence intensity, which can provide homogeneous wind speed during installation of wind power generators.

In this paper, two-phase flow dynamics in a micro channel with various wall conditions are both experimentally and theoretically investigated. Annulus, wavy and slug flow patterns are observed and location of liquid phase on different wall condition is visualized. The impact of flow structure on two-phase pressure drop is explained. Two-phase pressure drop is compared to a two-fluid model with relative permeability correlation. Optimization of correlation is conducted for each experimental case and theoretical solution for the flows in a circular channel is developed for annulus flow pattern showing a good match with experimental data in homogeneous channel case.
