Phytochemical constituents, antioxidant properties and p-coumaric acid analysis in some seagrasses

The polyphenolic contents and the antioxidant activity of the skins and pulps of different grape cultivars were estimated using HPLC and DPPH antioxidant assay, respectively. The phenolics and flavonoids identified were quercetin, kaempferol, caffeic acid, p-coumaric acid, cinnamic acid, and (−)-epicatechin. The total phenolic contents were found to be the highest in the grape skin of Flouxa (>400 mg/100 g), followed by Campbell Early and Tamnara (>300 mg/100 g), and then by Red Globe and Ruby Seedless (>250 mg/100 g), and the total phenolic content was the lowest in Italia and Delaware (<60 mg/100 g). The antioxidant activities of the grape extracts varied from 12.5% (Ruby Seedless) to 60.2% (Hongiseul) for skins, whereas the antioxidant activities of the grape extracts varied from 35.4% (Campbell Early) to 84.5% (Hongiseul) for pulps. The grape pulps have stronger antioxidant activities than those of the grape skins. Our results suggest that the phenolic and flavonoid contents in extracts of grape skins and pulps showed statistically significant correlations with the free radical scavenging activity.

It is important to search for new sources of bioactive, natural compounds, because customers are paying more attention to food quality. Fruits and berries from horticultural plants are known to be good sources of agents beneficial for human well-being and could serve as natural preservatives in the food industry. However, more recent research indicates that other plant organs can also be rich in nutrients. Our study focused on characterizing an unexplored source, namely leaf and twig extracts from Rosa canina. The chemical composition of these extracts was analyzed and their in vitro activity measured. HPLC analysis of the content of phenolics, vitamins and amino acids revealed that the leaf and twig extracts were found to be rich in bioactive compounds with potent antioxidant properties. The greatest differences between bioactive phenolic compounds in leaf and twig extracts related mainly to p-coumaric acid, myricetin, ellagic acid, cyanidin, procyanidin and quercetin, whereas salicylic acid levels were similar in both types of extract. Interactions with human serum albumin were investigated, and some conformational changes in protein structure were observed. Further analysis (lipid peroxidation, protein carbonylation, thiol group oxidation, DPPH inhibition and ROS inhibition) confirmed that both leaf and twig extracts exhibited antioxidant and antiradical scavenging activities. Cytotoxicity and hemotoxicity assays confirmed very low toxicity of the extracts towards human cells over the range of concentrations tested. Our results indicate that both extracts could serve as non-toxic sources of bioactive compounds with antiradical properties.

Tragopogon graminifoliusDC. (TG), Compositae family, is traditionally used for the treatment of various diseases like gastrointestinal and hepatic disorders. The aim of the present study is to standardize extracts from TG used for preparation of different dosage forms in traditional Iranian medicine (TIM) based on phenolic compounds. For this purpose, total phenolic content and some phenolic compounds were determined in ethanolic extracts from aerial part and root of TG by HPLC method. Furthermore, antioxidant activity was evaluated using DPPH-HPLC methods. Caffeic acid, gallic acid,ρ-coumaric acid, ferulic acid, and catechin were detected in root and aerial part of TG.ρ-Coumaric acid (6.357 ± 0.014 mg·g−1) was dominant phenolic compound in aerial part followed by ferulic acid (1.24 ± 0.018 mg·g−1). Also,ρ-coumaric acid (2.685 ± 0.031 mg·g−1) was highly abundant in root, followed by catechin (2.067 ± 0.021 mg·g−1). Antioxidant activity of root extract (460.45 ± 0.78 µg Vit.E.E·mL−1) was better than that of aerial part. Generally, phenolic compounds are one of the major constituents of TG and could be used as markers for standardization of dosage forms prepared from this plant. Also, TG demonstrated significant antioxidant activity using DPPH-HPLC method. Phenolic compounds of TG may be responsible for its marked antioxidant properties.

The present review aims for the study of phytoconstituents and pharmacological activities of some natural plants. The traditional medicinal plants have been found to acquire therapeutic activities significantly antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory antibacterial, anti-fungal, antioxidant properties etc. The plant-derived constituents are majorly for the aliments of used skin disease diabetes, bronchitis, asthma, arthritis, dry cough, ulcer and fever. The antimicrobial activity of the following plants like Justicia adathoda, Lantana Camara, Acacia leucophloea, Holoptelea integrifolia, Calotropis Procera, chlorophytum tuberosum, Bombax ceiba, Bacopa monnieri, Wedelia trilobata, Jatropha gossypifolia were obtained from the extraction of either  leaves, stem or flowers by using ethanol, methanol, aqueous, petroleum ether, chloroform. The phytochemical constituents of the extract have been shown the presence of alkaloids, glycosides, cardiac glucosides tannins, proteins, carbohydrates, saponin, quinines, triterpenes, steroids, polyphenolic, volatile oil, phenols, starch sugar, amino acid, resin and organic acids. This study evidenced the possible use of the mentioned plants as a source of natural medicines which are used as an antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, antioxidant agents. The paper deals with the study of antioxidant properties of extracts from vine seeds (Vitis vinifera L.) using spectrometric and chromatographic techniques. Ten vine varieties (Cerason, Laurot, Kofranka, Gewürztraminer, Hibernal, Blaufrankisch, Zweigeltrebe, Erilon, Palava, and Welschriesling) obtained from the years 2015, 2016, and 2017 were selected for the study. The antioxidant activity was determined spectrophotometrically using four fundamentally different methods; the content of total polyphenolic compounds was determined using the Folin–Ciocalteu method. In 2015, the content of 14 antioxidants (gallic acid, caffeic acid, coumaric acid, coutaric acid, ferulic acid, fertaric acid, trans-piceid, trans-piceatannol, rutin, quercetin-3-β-d-glucoside, quercitrin, myricetin, catechin, and epicatechin) were studied. The results of the study show the high content of antioxidant components in grape seeds and the differences in content in individual varieties and in individual years.

Objective: The aim of the study was to evaluate the hypolipidemic and antioxidant properties of aerial parts aqueous extract of Warionia saharae (APAE of W. saharae) in normal and streptozotocin (STZ) induced-diabetic rats. Additionally, the quantitative and qualitative analysis for the presence of different phytochemical constituents in the APAE of W. saharae was performed. Methods: The effects of oral administration of APAE of W. saharae (5 mg/kg) on the plasma Total Cholesterol (TC) and triglyceride (TG) levels were measured in both normal and diabetic rats. Moreover, the antioxidant capacity was realized by the method of DPPH. Total polyphenol as x of the APAE of W. saharae were determined. Results: APAE of W. saharae showed a strong hypolipidemic and antihyperglycemic effects both in normal and in STZ induced diabetic rats. On the other hand, APAE of W. saharae showed a potent antioxidant activity and revealed inhibitory activity. Moreover, the quantitative determination of total polyphenol and flavonoid contents showed high contents of these phytochemicals. Concerning the qualitative analysis several classes of chemicals have been found. Conclusion: APAE of W. saharae (5 mg/kg) shows the potential cholesterol and glucose lowering activity as well as antioxidant properties in both normal and STZ-induced diabetic rats.

Abstract-The medicinal plants are useful for healing and curing of human diseases. Over 55% of all modern clinical drugs are of natural product origin. The plant, Ocimum tenuiflorum is highly used by the people of whole world specially Indians to cure various disorders because of the presence of phytochemical constituents. Ocimum tenuiflorum plant is known to possess anticancer, antispasmodic, antiviral, insecticide, antiseptic, analgesic, antiinflammatory, antimicrobial, antistress, Immunomodulatory, hypotensive and antioxidant properties. The present study reveals that various secondary metabolites such as glycosides, alkaloids, flavonoids, phenols, terpenoids, tannins, saponins, antraquenone , fats and oils and steroids are present in different leaf extract of the plant.
