Foam concrete is provided with light weight, thermal insulation, sound insulation and fire resistance, good seismic performance and other characteristics. To improve properties of foam concrete microstructure is studied with the help of fractal theory, fractal dimension related to mechanical properties and thermal performance of foam concrete is calculated by MATLAB language program. The results indicate that the microstructure of foam concrete showed significant fractal character, the fractal dimension is between 1.3 and 2.0. Apparent density, 28d compressive strength, and thermal conductivity decreases with the increase of fly ash and foaming agent content, fractal dimension increased. Formulas of fractal dimension and the fly ash, foaming agent content were established. Foam concrete with low density, high strength, and good thermal insulation property will be prepared conducted by the formulas.

Roof and wall are known to be responsible for heat entering into a building and should therefore be thermally insulated in order to lessen energy consumption required for air-conditioning. In this study, four soil-based aerated lightweight concrete (ALC) panels each measures 750 mm (length) x 750 mm (breadth) x 70 mm (thick) with different aerial intensity of newspaper membrane encased were produced and tested on their thermal insulation property. For environmental friendly and economy reasons, clayey soil was used in place of sand to produce the ALC panels and they were tested in the Thermal Laboratory for twenty hours. Temperature gradient was computed based on the surface temperature measured during the test. The results obtained indicated that newspaper membrane encased soil-based ALC panels have superior heat insulation performance compared to control panel in terms of temperature gradient. It is found that the temperature gradient increased from 1.92 °C/cm to 2.08 °C/cm or 8.3% higher than control panel with just merely 0.05 g/cm2 of newspaper membrane encased.

Abstract This study investigated the thermal insulation properties based on electrical heating test of graphene-based multi-layer fabric heating elements to confirm the possibility of application for fabric heating element for protective clothing. Four layers were designed as layers of outer, filler, electrical heating textile, and lining. The outer fabrics used two different densities of aramid woven fabrics (LD_ARW and HD_ARW), an aramid knit (AR_KT), and nonwoven (AR_NW). Fabricated graphene/polymer coated electrical heating textile (GR) exhibits a surface temperature of about 85 °C, a current of 0.12 A, and a power of 3 W when 30 V is applied. As composed with 4-layer, the surface temperature of LD_ARW and HD_ARW used as the outer for sample indicated less than 50 °C, due to their excellent heat resistance property; whereas, when AR_KT and AR_NW were used, the temperature was about 50 °C. This is because their fine fibers form high porosity that can entrap air. As a result of the thermal insulation properties, the temperature difference of each layer was in the order ΔT(GR-N3) < ΔT(GR-Lining) < ΔT(GR-Outer). In particular, when AR_NW was used as the outer fabric, ΔT(GR-Outer) was decreased by about 10 °C, compared with that of the other outer fabric. By the effect of relative humidity under dry 25% RH and comfortable 55% RH, the temperature difference was decreased under 55% RH; thus, the thermal insulation property was improved under comfortable humidity condition. Therefore, the best thermal insulation performance was exhibited when AR_NW was used as outer under 55% RH, and it is expected to expand its application to fabric heating element for protective clothing.

To achieve the purposes of storing industry solid wastes and enhancing subgrade stability in seasonally frozen regions, Structure III, which utilized the modified silty clay (SC) and extruded polystyrene (XPS) board as a novel subgrade thermal insulation layer (NSTIL), was presented. The above modified SC consisted of oil shale industry solid waste, fly ash and SC. In terms of environmental impact, the average single pollution index, the Nemerow integrated pollution index and national standards were carried out to estimate whether the modified SC could be used as a subgrade filler. These results show that, although the modified SC will produce pollution to the environmental background, the concentration of each hydrochemical constituent from the modified SC meets the corresponding national standards in China. In terms of the thermal insulation capability, the numerical simulation of coupling moisture and temperature was applied to analyze that of Structures I, II and III. The research results show that the numerical results of the Structure I are approximated to the official website information of Jilin province, indicating that the above numerical simulation is effective for coupling moisture and temperature of frozen soil. Both modified SC and NSTIL have the advantage of good thermal insulation property, but the thermal insulation property of the NSTIL is greater. Furthermore, the NSTIL at the top of the Structure III can protect the SC of the experimental road from the damage of frost heave. The research results are of great significance for reducing environmental pollution caused by oil shale industry solid waste and fly ash, increasing the utilization rate of industrial waste and enhancing the subgrade stability in seasonally frozen regions.

Aramids fibers are among the best known of the high-performance, synthetic, organic fibers. Needle-punched nonwoven fabrics with various structures were manufactured and their physical properties, structure, thermal insulation property and acoustic absorption property were examined. The results show that the aramid fiber needle-punched nonwoven fabrics possess good performance at thermal and acoustic insulation besides light mass and inherent flame-resistant.

For strengthening sustainability of subgrade life-cycle service performance and storing industry solid wastes in seasonally frozen regions, compared to previous research of modified silty clay (MC) which consisted of oil shale ash (OSA), fly ash (FA), and silty clay (SC), we identified for the first time, the variations in the thermal insulation capability of MC with different levels of dry density and moisture content. Taking into consideration the effects of 0–20 freeze-thaw (F-T) cycles by a laboratory test, and by the numerical simulation of coupling moisture-temperature, while considering the effects of F-T cycles, the thermal insulation capability of the MC board and the XPS board were studied quantitatively. The testing results show that the thermal conductivity of MC and SC gradually decreases as the number of F-T cycles increases, and that of the XPS board increases with the increased number of F-T cycles, and tend to be of a constant value of 0.061 W/m/K after 17 F-T cycles. The specific heat capacity of the solid particles of the MC, SC, and XPS board does not change regularly as their moisture content, and the number of F-T cycles change, and their variations are in the range of the test error (2%). Simulation results show that MC has the advantage of the thermal insulation property to reduce the frost-depth of 0.21 m, and the thermal insulation property of the composite layer consisting of the MC and XPS board is greater to reduce the frost-depth of 0.55 m, so that it can protect both the SC and sand gravel of the experimental road from the frost heave damage. The research methods and results are very significant in accurately evaluating the thermal insulation capacity and the sustainability of MC and the composite layer consisting of the MC and XPS board, strengthening the stability of the subgrade and increasing the availability of industrial waste.
