This review looks into the state of gigacycle fatigue behavior of some structural materials used in engineering works. Particular attention is given to the use of ultrasonic fatigue testing machine (USF-2000) due to its important role in conducting gigacycle fatigue tests. Gigacycle fatigue behavior of most materials used for very long life engineering applications is reviewed.Gigacycle fatigue behavior of magnesium alloys, aluminum alloys, titanium alloys, spheroid graphite cast iron, steels and nickel alloys are reviewed together with the examination of the most common material defects that initiate gigacycle fatigue failures in these materials. In addition, the stage-by-stage fatigue crack developments in the gigacycle regime are reviewed. This review is concluded by suggesting the directions for future works in gigacycle fatigue.

Abstract The paper presents a proposal for modernising the DCR-type self-destroying fuse for rocket propelled grenade munitions. It features a description of the fuse’s structure concept, its design and operation by presenting its particular stages. The further part is a description of the structural materials used for constructing the modernised fuse. Then, a conducted analysis of laboratory and field testing of the developed fuse models was presented. The results of the field testing of the devised and developed modernised fuse technology demonstrator are shown. The high quality of the fuse’s operation was demonstrated. The research paper is concluded with a short summary and a list of the literature used.

This chapter reveals the architectural remains recovered at Fort St. Joseph. Unlike other colonial settlements, no detailed maps, drawings, or descriptions have come to light to illuminate the physical appearance of the fort. Here, we trace the origins of French colonial architectural styles and how they were adapted to the New World. We then employ archaeological and documentary sources to ascertain the types of buildings that may have existed at Fort St. Joseph, their functions, and what they may have looked like. This information will help in our interpretations of the function, construction techniques, and materials used to construct buildings as revealed through the architectural remains and associated structural materials found at Fort St. Joseph. This examination of eighteenth-century buildings in New France provides a better appreciation and understanding of colonial architecture and the conservative nature of French building practices.

AbstractHelium accumulation negatively impacts structural materials used in neutron-irradiated environments, such as fission and fusion reactors. Next-generation fission and fusion reactors will require structural materials, such as steels, that are resistant to large neutron doses yet see service temperatures in the range most affected by helium embrittlement. Previous work has indicated the difficulty of experimentally differentiating nanometer-sized cavities such as helium bubbles from the Ti–Y–O rich nanoclusters (NCs) in radiation-tolerant nanostructured ferritic alloys (NFAs). Because the NCs are expected to sequester helium away from grain boundaries and reduce embrittlement, experimental methods to study simultaneously the NC and bubble populations are needed. In this study, aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) results combining high-collection-efficiency X-ray spectrum images (SIs), multivariate statistical analysis (MVSA), and Fresnel-contrast bright-field STEM imaging, have been used for such a purpose. Fresnel-contrast imaging, with careful attention to TEM-STEM reciprocity, differentiates bubbles from NCs. MVSA of X-ray SIs unambiguously identifies NCs. Therefore, combined Fresnel-contrast STEM and X-ray SI is an effective STEM-based method to characterize helium-bearing NFAs.

Mass use of metals as structural materials, exactly iron (steels), has a significant lack related with their destruction in natural and man-made corrosive environments. The article presents a brief analysis of the results and achievements of scientists and specialists of UPI-USPTU obtained in the study of theoretical and practical aspects of the creation and application of electrochemical corrosion inhibitors. The main attention is paid to the action of acidic water and water-organic corrosive media on the surface of metals and structural materials used in the creation of oil refining equipment. In the period from 1960 to 2010, a number of corrosion inhibitors based on heterocyclic compounds were developed in UPI-USPTU to prevent the destruction of metal and steel alloys in natural and man-made aggressive environments, the mechanism of their action was established and the efficiency of practical use was justified.

Masonry is one of the most common structural materials used to build houses in the city of Lima, Peru. The structural features of this material and its components vary widely, however, due to the manufacturing process, which uses bricks and aggregates and different levels of labor. This paper presents experimental results realized using bricks, prism and wallettes to determine the mechanical properties of masonry.
