In the present study, we used both simulations and real data set analyses to show that, under stochastic processes of population differentiation, the concepts of spatial heterogeneity and spatial pattern overlap. In these processes, the proportion of variation among and within a population (measured by G ST and 1 - G ST, respectively) is correlated with the slope and intercept of a Mantel's test relating genetic and geographic distances. Beyond the conceptual interest, the inspection of the relationship between population heterogeneity and spatial pattern can be used to test departures from stochasticity in the study of population differentiation.

The new coronavirus infection (COVID-19) represents a challenge for global health. Since the outbreak began, the number of confirmed cases has exceeded 117 million, with more than 2.6 million deaths worldwide. With public health measures aimed at containing the spread of the disease, several countries have faced a crisis in the availability of intensive care units. Currently, a large-scale effort is underway to identify the nucleotide sequences of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus that is an etiological agent of COVID-19. Global sequencing of thousands of viral genomes has revealed many common genetic variants, which enables the monitoring of the evolution of SARS-CoV-2 and the tracking of its spread over time. Understanding the current evolution of SARS-CoV-2 is necessary not only for a retrospective analysis of the new coronavirus infection spread, but also for the development of approaches to the therapy and prophylaxis of COVID-19. In this review, we have focused on the general characteristics of SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19. Also, we have analyzed available publications on the genetic diversity of the virus and the relationship between the diversity and the biological properties of SARS-CoV-2, such as virulence and contagiousness.

AFLP analyses were used to assess the genetic similarity among selected accessions at the South China Tobacco Breeding Research Centre (Yunnan province, Southwest China). 154 AFLP polymorphic fragments out of 561 fragments were used to assess the genetic diversity among 28 tobacco accessions. The average number of polymorphic bands per AFLP primer pair was 15.4. AFLPs seemed to be an effective classification tools for germplasm conservation and breeding. Limited genetic variation was detected within this group of accessions. The relationship of cultivars was estimated by cluster analysis based on AFLP data.

Most of the genetic diversity of North American alfalfa cultivars has been accounted for by nine germplasm sources listed in descending order of winter hardiness as follows: Medicago sativa ssp. falcata, Ladak, M. sativa ssp. xvaria, Turkistan, Flemish, Chilean, Peruvian, Indian and African. In most instances, the breeder assigns a fall dormancy score and the relative proportions of each of the nine germplasm source for each cultivar at registration. The fall dormancy score (1 = dormant to 9 = non-dormant), determined by measuring plant height in October after harvest in early September, is used to indicate cultivar adaptation for different regions. This study examines the relationship between germplasm composition and plant height, the equivalence of fall dormancy. The signs on the partial regression coefficients of a multiple regression analysis of plant height on the proportional content of the nine sources of germplasm showed that the fall dormancy fell essentially into two classes, namely, a dormant category, comprising cultivars containing a large contribution of Falcata and Ladak, and a non-dormant category, in which Indian and African germplasm predominate. This does not necessarily preclude the influence of any of the other germplasm sources on fall dormancy, since they represent a rich source of diversity. However, nine distinct classes were not recognisable, perhaps because of the lack of an exact equivalence between fall dormancy class and plant height of the fall regrowth. Since these observations have not been derived in a common nursery, the latitude and latitude × cultivar effects have been disregarded. These limitations should be recognized when using the currently assigned fall dormancy ratings to predict cultivar adaptation. Key words: Alfalfa, fall dormancy, sources of germplasm

Rice vampireweed belongs to the Orobanchaceae and is found in Africa and Australia. It is a hemiparasitic weed of lowland rice genotypes and causes losses of 40 to 100% of rice grain yield. Our study addressed the genetic diversity of rice vampireweed in Benin and Senegal. The specific objectives of this research were to study the genetic diversity of rice vampireweed accessions in Benin and Senegal and the relationship between the different genotypes of rice vampireweed through agroecological areas. To achieve these objectives, the genetic diversity of rice vampireweed accessions using the AFLP technique was studied. Based on our results, dendrogram classification has distinguished four different genetic groups. The populations of Benin and Senegal are genetically diverse. Substantial genetic differentiation (GST) exists among agroecological areas within Benin and Senegal (GST = 0.17). The high genetic diversity of rice vampireweed in Benin and Senegal presents a challenge for the development of resistant rice germplasm.

The bacterial contamination of food products can cause serious public health problems. Interest in Arcobacter contamination has increased due to the relationship between these bacteria and human enteritis. We studied the prevalence and genetic diversity of Arcobacter species at the retail level in the province of Alava in Basque Country, Spain. The results showed a high genetic diversity and indicated the regular presence of the main Arcobacter spp. associated with human enteric illness in food products. Arcobacter butzleri, Arcobacter cryaerophilus, and Arcobacter skirrowii were detected with an overall prevalence close to 40% and were isolated from 15 (42.8%) fresh cow's milk samples, 12 (73.3%) shellfish samples, 11 (55%) chicken samples, 2 (10%) pork samples, and 1 (5%) beef sample. The results indicate the need to investigate the impact of Arcobacter spp. on public health.

Ecuadorian potato landraces (Solanum tuberosum L.) are an important genetic resource, but they have been poorly described. Simple Sequence Repeats (SSR) markers were applied to 152 landraces to assess the genetic diversity of potatoes collected in three areas of high diversity: the Carchi, Chimborazo and Loja provinces. These SSR markers were previously used in the genotyping of more than 800 European potato varieties. The number of alleles and Polymorphism Information Content (PIC) of the markers found in this study were similar to those in European cultivars; however, the overlap in alleles was small. Based on SSR data, the relationship between local names of landraces and genetic identity showed several landraces with different names but identical molecular profiles. It also showed that landraces with identical names but obvious differences in tuber morphology were almost always genetically different. There was no clear grouping of material collected according to the regions under study that suggests extensive movement of seed potatoes all over Ecuador.

ABSTRACTBackgroundPneumococcus is a diverse pathogen, with >90 serotypes, each of which has a distinct polysaccharide capsule. Pneumococci can switch capsules, evading vaccine pressure. Certain serotype pairs are more likely to switch, but the drivers of these patterns are not well understood.MethodsWe used the PubMLST and Global Pneumococcal Sequencing (GPS) databases to quantify the number of genetic lineages on which different serotype pairs co-occur. We also quantified the genetic diversity of each serotype. Regression models evaluated the relationship between shared polysaccharide structural components and the frequency of serotype switching and diversity.ResultsA number of serotype pairs co-occurred on the same genetic lineage more commonly than expected. Co-occurrence of between-serogroup pairs was more common when both serotypes had glucose as a component of the capsule (and, potentially, glucuronic acid). Diversity also varied markedly by serotype and was lower for serotypes with glucuronic acid in the capsule and higher for those with galactose in the capsule.ConclusionsCertain pairs of serotypes are more likely to occur on the same genetic background, and these patterns were correlated with shared polysaccharide components. This might indicate adaptation of strains to produce capsules with particular characteristics.
