SummaryInorganic trace mineral salts in the premix have a detrimental effect on the stability of vitamins due to redox reactions. A study was conducted to investigate the effect of dietary supplementation of different levels of vitamin premix with different mineral premixes on the performance and bone characteristics of broilers. A 2 x 2 factorial dietary treatment was used with two levels of vitamins and two types of minerals in the premix. A total of 1056, one-day old chicks were randomly assigned to four dietary treatments with 12 replicate pens of 22 chicks for 28 d. An interactive effect between vitamin levels and mineral sources on weight gain and feed intake of chickens was detected. Chickens fed the diet containing 100% vitamin premix with either source of mineral premix had higher (P < 0.01) weight gain and feed intake than those fed the diet containing 30% vitamin premix with either source of mineral premix. However, the chickens fed the diet containing the 30% vitamin premix with the organic minerals had higher (P < 0.01) weight gain and feed intake than those fed the diet containing 30% vitamin premix with inorganic minerals. Chickens fed the diet containing organic mineral premix had lower (P < 0.05) mortality and feed to gain ratio and higher (P < 0.01) bone breaking strength and ash content of tibia than those fed the inorganic mineral premix treatment. Chickens fed the diet containing 100% vitamin premix had higher (P < 0.01) breaking strength of femur and tibia ash than those fed the diet containing 30% vitamin premix. The results from this trial indicated that total replacement of inorganic trace minerals with organic minerals can increase the storage stability of vitamins in feed premixes containing both vitamins and trace minerals, which is reflected in better growth performance in poultry.

The growth performance, blood parameters and production cost of two hundred and fifty two (252) Abor acre plus broiler chickens fed sweet orange peel meal (SOPM) with and without enzymes were investigated. The experimental diets consist of control (T ), maize was 0 replaced with SOPM at 15, 20 and 25 % without exogenous enzymes to form T , T and T 1 2 3 respectively, and another supplemented with exogenous enzyme to form T , T and T 4 5 6 respectively. The birds were randomly allocated to seven treatment groups replicated three times to have 12 birds per replicate and were fed experimental diet ad-libitum for eight weeks. Result showed that broiler chickens fed control diet (T ) had significantly (P<0.05) 0 higher final weight (FW) of 2.44kg, weight gain (WG) of 42.91, feed intake (FI) of 86.53, better feed conversion ratio (FCR)of 2.01 and protein conversion ratio (PCR)of 0.44 compared to other dietary treatments. Broiler chickens fed T and T had significantly 1 4 (P<0.05) higher final weight of 1.98 and 1.98 kg, weight gain of 34.69 and 34.71 g and feed intake of 78.35 and 81.63 g respectively while significantly (P<0.05) least values of 1.75 and 1.80 kg final weight, 30.73 and 31.49 g weight gain and 69.47 and 71.84 g feed intake respectively were recorded in broiler chickens fed T and T . Haematological indices namely: 2 5 PCV, RBC, WBC and Hb were not significantly different (P>0.05) but MCV, MCH, MCHC, lymphocytes, heterophil, eosinophil and monocytes differed significantly (P<0.05). Serum biochemical indices namely total protein, albumin, globulin and uric acid were significantly (P<0.05) influenced by the experimental diets. Though, there was no detrimental effect of SOPM and enzyme on production cost as profit was made at all replacement levels of SOPM with and without enzyme treatment, but profit per bird (N) and cost to benefit ratio revealed the superiority of the broiler chickens fed control diet (T ). Based on the results obtained, 0 SOPM can replace maize up to 25 % without posing any deleterious effect on the broiler chickens growth performance, blood parameters and production cost. However, the cost to benefit ratio was compromised with the use of SOPM.

AbstractThe right-angled triangle mixture experiment was designed to include fourteen diets with different concentrations of starch, protein and lipid. Experimental diets were offered to male Ross 308 broiler chickens from 10 to 23 d after hatching, and response curves and surfaces were generated to illustrate the influence of macronutrients on growth performance and nutrient utilisations. Despite the primary function of macronutrients, especially protein, may not be providing energy, macronutrients were expressed as energy derived from starch, protein and fat for statistical purposes in the mixture design. Energy derived from lipid had a greater impact on feed intake than energy derived from starch and protein. When we compared the influence of starch and protein on feed intake, ‘equal distance rule’ was observed, which means the animal consumes feed to the point on its respective nutritional rails where the shortage of starch exactly equals the surplus of consumed protein. Increasing the protein-derived energy intake increased weight gain in broiler chickens, whereas energy intake derived from starch and lipid had little impact on weight gain. Feed conversion ratio (FCR) may be reduced by either increasing protein energy intake or decreasing starch energy intake. As the slope of the contours was less than 1, the influence of starch energy intakes on FCR exceeded that of protein energy intakes. In conclusion, energy derived from protein is more important than non-protein energy in terms of weight gain, and a balance between protein and energy supplies is required for efficient muscle protein deposition.

Abstract. The trial was conducted to evaluate the effect of different levels of dried sweet orange (Citrus sinensis) peel on growth performance in broilers. A total of 400 male broiler chicks (Ross-308) were randomly allocated to treatments varying in supplemental DSOP. The dietary groups consisted of five diets fed for 42 days: control diet without feed additive, diet containing 1.5 % feed additive only in starter phase, diet containing 1.5 % feed additive during whole period (starter + grower), diet containing 3 % feed additive only in starter phase, diet containing 3 % feed additive during whole period. The growth responses achieved by broilers from all groups complied with the standards. However, adding up to 3 % DSOP in diet seems to depress feed intake, body weight gain increasing feed conversion ratio of both starter and growing broilers. Conversely, DSOP in the proportion of 1.5 % of feed seems to promote feed intake and weight gain in the period between the 1–21 days of age, indicating that DSOP can constitute a useful additive in the feeding of broilers. Further research is needed to assess the effects of DSOP to improve its suitability as a feed resource for poultry production.

In the present study, sterilized rice bran was fermented for 48, 72 and 96 hours by Aspergillus flavus and proximate analysis indicated that fermentation changed nutritive value of the rice bran. Four experimental feeds were fed to 4 groups of day old broiler chicks for 6 weeks to evaluate their effects on broiler performance (weekly feed intake, weight gain, FCR and mortality). During first 2 weeks, birds of group D showed significant difference (P less than 0.05) in feed intake and weight gain as compared to groups A (control), B and C. All groups did not show significant differences in feed conversion ratios (FCR). During 3rd week of trial, chickens of Group D showed significant difference (P less than 0.05) in feed intake, weight gain and FCR as compared to group A. During last 3 weeks, birds in group D showed significant difference (P less than 0.05) in feed intake, weight gain and FCR as compared to birds of groups A, B and C. Group D showed significantly higher weight gain and better FCR (P less than 0.05) as compared to groups A, B and C. On the whole, broiler chickens fed on 96 hours fermented rice bran showed best growth performance. In-vivo phytase activity was determined in ash of tibia bones collected from selected birds in each group. Group D showed significantly high percentage (P less than 0.05) of ash and phosphorus in tibia bones as compared to groups A (control), B and C. In conclusion, fermented rice bran showed beneficial effect on broiler performance and could be used in poultry feed as phytase source.

The objective of this study was to investigate the impacts of dietary crude protein (CP), fishmeal and sorghum on nutrient utilisation, digestibility coefficients and disappearance rates of starch and protein, amino acid concentrations in systemic plasma and their relevance to growth performance of broiler chickens using the Box-Behnken response surface design. The design consisted of three factors at three levels including dietary CP (190, 210, 230 g/kg), fishmeal (0, 50, 100 g/kg), and sorghum (0, 150, 300 g/kg). A total of 390 male, off-sex Ross 308 chicks were offered experimental diets from 14 to 35 days post-hatch. Growth performance, nutrient utilisation, starch and protein digestibilities and plasma free amino acids were determined. Dietary CP had a negative linear impact on weight gain where the transition from 230 to 190 g/kg CP increased weight gain by 9.43% (1835 versus 2008 g/bird, P = 0.006). Moreover, dietary CP linearly depressed feed intake (r = -0.486. P < 0.001). Fishmeal inclusions had negative linear impacts on weight gain (r = -0.751, P < 0.001) and feed intake (r = -0.495, P < 0.001). There was an interaction between dietary CP and fishmeal for FCR. However, growth performance was not influenced by dietary inclusions of sorghum. Total plasma amino acid concentrations were negatively related to weight gain (r = -0.519, P < 0.0001). The dietary transition from 0 to 100 g/kg fishmeal increased total amino acid concentrations in systemic plasma by 35% (771 versus 1037 μg/mL, P < 0.001). It may be deduced that optimal weight gain (2157 g/bird), optimal feed intake (3330 g/bird) and minimal FCR (1.544) were found in birds offered 190 g/kg CP diets without fishmeal inclusion, irrespective of sorghum inclusions. Both fishmeal and sorghum inclusions did not alter protein and starch digestion rate in broiler chickens; however, moderate reductions in dietary CP could advantage broiler growth performance.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential benefits of substituting dietary fish meal with grasshopper meal on the growth performance of broiler chickens. The study was carried out in a mini-animal house of the Department of Biological Science, Federal University of Kashere, Gombe State, Nigeria. Seventy-two, 2-weeks old Arbor acres chicken strain were procured from May Farms, Gombe. The grasshoppers were collected using sweep net trapping method. They were oven dried and milled using local milling machine and incorporated into poultry diets by replacing dietary fishmeal at 0% (Control, A), 50% (B) and 100% (C). Each dietary treatment had 24 birds triplicates of eight birds per replicate in a completely randomized design. The birds were randomly allotted into pens demarcated with plywoods. The birds were fed the experimental diets throughout the six weeks period of the experiment and were subjected to similar managerial and dietary conditions during which time data was collected and used to evaluate weekly weight-gain, feed intake, feed conversion ratio, feed efficiency ratio and linear body measurements monitored. The weight-gain were significantly different (p<0.05) among the treatment groups where birds on Treatment C(1720.11±2.11 g) was highest followed by those on treatment B(1480.00±2.12 g) and the least mean final weekly weight gain of 1,287.98±1.20 g was observed in Treatment A; Also feed intake exhibited the same pattern of weight gain. For linear body measurements, the highest body length increase was recorded in Treatment C (21.39±1.01 cm) while the least was recorded in those on Treatment A, (15.49±1.10 cm). The same trend was observed for body width increase, thigh length increase, shank length increase and wing length increase. This study showed that dietary  grasshopper meal promoted growth of broiler chicken and so would conveniently replace dietary fishmeal. Therefore, establishmentof insect farms are highly recommended to produce enough grasshopper meal to meet the demands of poultry feed industries. This study was conducted to determine the growth performance and nutrient digestibility ofbroiler chickens fed wood-ash based diet. A total of 120 broiler chickens were randomlyallocated to four treatments in the completely randomized design. Treatment 1 was thecontrol while Treatments 2, 3, and 4 were Neem ash (NTA), Shea butter ash (SBA) and Locustbean ash (LBA), respectively. Each treatment has three replicates and ten birds per replicate.Data on growth rate, live weight, feed intake and mortality were collected while feedconversion ratio was calculated. Apparent dry matter, crude protein, crude fibre, etherextract and nitrogen free extract retention were also determined. All data collected wereanalyzed using one-way analysis of variance. Starter phase results shows that birds on SBA ash had the highest final weight (366.00 g), body weight gain (173.71 g) and feed intake (546.03 g) and were significantly higher (p<0.05) than the control. At the finisher phase, all ash treatment had higher (p<0.05) final, daily weight gain and better (p<0.05) feed conversion than the control dietary. The digestibility results indicated birds on LBA diet had the highest crude fibre and ash content. The study showed that wood ash influenced growth performance and nutrient retention of broiler chickens. Chickens on ash-based diets performed better that the control at the finisher phase.

The objective of the present study was to determine effect of dietary inclusion of (Zingiber officinale) and garlic (Allium sativum) oil mixture (GIGM) on the growth performance and caecal microbial population of broiler chickens. One hundred and fifty one-day-old broiler chicks (Ross 308) were randomly allocated into 5 treatments with three replicates consisting of 10 birds each in a completely randomized design. Birds in treatment 1 (T1) was fed basal diet with 0 % inclusion of GIGM while T2, T3, T4 and T5 were given 0.1 %, 0.2 %, 0.3 % and 0.4 % respectively. Clean feed and water were offered ad libitum and all other management practices were strictly observed throughout the experiment which lasted for 56 days. Results obtained were used to determine weight gain (WG), average daily weight gain (ADWG), total feed intake (TFI), average daily feed intake (ADFI), feed conversion ratio (FCR) and microbial population of E.coli, Salmonella spp and Lactobacillus spp. ADWG, ADFI and FCR were significantly (P ˂ 0.05) influenced by the dietary inclusion of GIGM. ADWG were highest in T5 (47.80 g), T4 (45.75 g) and T3 (45.09 g), intermediate in T2 (39.59 g) and lowest in T1 (30.72 g). Lactobacillus spp increased as the level of dietary inclusion of GIGM increases (P ˂ 0.05). E.coli and Salmonella spp counts were significantly (P ˂ 0.05) different among the treatments. It was concluded that GIGM could be included in the diet of broilers up to 0.4 % without causing any deleterious effect on the performance and health of birds.

The aim of present study was to investigate the short-term and long-term effect of the peripheral administration of ghrelin on the growth performance (feed intake, weight gain, and feed conversion ratio), carcass quality, and selected serum biochemical (glucose, total cholesterol, triglyceride, and total protein) and hormonal (T3, T4, and corticostrone) indices in broiler chickens. 240 one-day-old broiler chickens were selected, and allocated into three treatment groups (control and two experimental groups). On day-21 of the rearing period, ghrelin was peripherally administrated to three experimental groups. The control group contained birds without any administration of peptide or solution, groups G50 and G100; included birds with Ip-injection of 50 and 100 (ng/100g BW) ghrelin peptide, respectively. The peripheral administration of exogenous ghrelin did not affect feed intake, body weight gain (BWG), feed conversion ratio (FCR) and carcass characteristics in broiler chickens. In short-term samples taken 12h after ghrelin infusion, the glucose level was increased in ghrelin-treated groups (162 and 151 mg/dl in G50 and G100 compared with 117 mg/dl in control; P< 0.01) and there were significant declines for TC, triglyceride, and TP in the ghrelin-treated groups (G50 and G100) compared with the control. In addition, long-term glucose level has a greater value in G50 and G100 (182 and 200.66 mg/dl) compared with control (133.60 mg/dl) group (P< 0.01). A significant decline was also observed for TC and triglyceride content in the ghrelin-treated groups (P<0.05). There was no significant difference among groups for TP in short-term and long-term samples. There was a significant increase for T4 in ghrelin-treated groups (G50 and G100) compared with the control (4.55 and 4.57 ng/ml vs 4.20 ng/ml respectively; P< 0.05) in long-term samples. In conclusion, the peripheral administration of ghrelin in broiler chickens, during the commercial rearing period did not affect the overall growth performance, carcass quality and feed conversion ratio. The infusion of exogenous ghrelin may increase the levels of serum glucose, decrease total cholesterol and triglyceride, and T4 levels are increased in the long-term (and not in the short-term or 12h after administration).

A total of 144, one-day-old Arbor Acre chicks were used to investigate the effect of feeding diets containing cowpea milling waste and plantain peel meal mixture (CMWPPM) on the growth performance, nutrients digestibility and economy of feed conversion of broiler chickens. The birds were randomly allotted to four dietary treatments in a completely randomized design model, and consisted of 0, 10, 20 and 30 % dietary inclusion levels of CMWPPM. Each treatment was replicated three times with 12 chicks per replicate, making a total of 36 chicks per treatment. The experiment lasted for seven weeks. Nutrients digestibility studies were carried out at the 3rd and 7th week of the experiment using speciallydesigned metabolism cages. Results showed that at the starter phase, birds on CMWPPM 0% had significantly (P<0.05) higher feed intake, while birds on CMMPPM 20 % had significantly (P<0.05) lower feed intake than birds on the other treatments. The cost of feed and total cost of feed intake were significantly (P<0.05) higher for CMWPPM 30 % and significantly lower for CMWPPM 20 % than for the other treatments; while feed cost per kg weight gain had no significant difference across the treatments. At the finisher phase, there were no significant differences in all the growth performance parameters measured across the treatment groups. However, total cost of feed intake was significantly (P<0.05) higher for CMWPPM 10 % and significantly (P<0.05) lower for CMWPPM 20 %. The feed cost per kg weight gain was significantly (P<0.05) higher for CMWPPM 10 % and significantly (P<0.05) lower for CMWPPM 20 % and 30 % diets. Results of nutrients digestibility at the starter phase show that though dry matter, crude protein, crude fibre and nitrogen free extract digestibility were significantly (P<0.05) different across the treatments, there were no significant (P>0.05) difference in the overall total digestible nutrient across the diets. For the finisher phase, as the level of CMWPPM increased in the diets, the CP, CF, ash, lipid, NFE and TDN decreased across the treatments Therefore, it is concluded that the inclusion level of CMWPPM in the diet of broiler chickens should not exceed 20 % for optimum economy of feed conversion at the finisher phase; whereas birds can be fed diets containing 30 % dietary inclusion level of CMWPPM with good economy of feed conversion at the starter phase.   Un total de 144 poussins de 'Arbor Acre' âgés d'un jour a été utilisés pour étudier l'effet des régimes alimentaires contenant des déchets de 'cowpea' et du mélange de repas defarine d'écorce de 'plantain'. (Le 'CMWPPM') sur les performances de croissance, la digestibilité des nutriments et l'économie de la conversion alimentaire des poulets de chair. Les oiseaux ont été attribués au hasard à quatre traitements diététiques dans un modèle de conception complètement aléatoire, et consistaient en des niveaux d'inclusion alimentaire de 0, 10, 20 et 30% de 'CMWPPM'. Chaque traitement a été répété trois fois avec 12 poussins par répétition, soit un total de 36 poussins par traitement. L'expérience a duré sept semaines. Des études de digestibilité des nutriments ont été réalisées à la 3ème et 7ème semaine de l'expérience en utilisant des cages de métabolisme spécialement conçues. Les résultats ont montré qu'à la phase de démarrage, les oiseaux sous 'CMWPPM' 0% avaient une ingestion alimentaire significativement (P <0,05) plus élevée, tandis que les oiseaux sous 'CMMPPM' 20% avaient une ingestion alimentaire significativement (P <0,05) inférieure à celle des oiseaux sur les autres traitements. Le coût de l'alimentation et le coût total de la prise alimentaire étaient significativement (P <0,05) plus élevés pour CMWPPM 30% et significativement plus faibles pour CMWPPM 20% que pour les autres traitements ; tandis que le coût de l'alimentation par kg de gain de poids n'avait pas de différence significative entre les traitements. Lors de la phase de finition, il n'y avait pas de différences significatives dans tous les paramètres de performance de croissance mesurés dans les groupes de traitement. Cependant, le coût total de l'ingestion alimentaire était significativement (P <0,05) plus élevé pour CMWPPM 10% et significativement (P <0,05) inférieur pour CMWPPM 20%. Le coût de l'alimentation par kg de gain de poids était significativement (P <0,05) plus élevé pour le CMWPPM 10% et significativement (P <0,05) inférieur pour les régimes CMWPPM 20% et 30%. Les résultats de la digestibilité des nutriments à la phase de démarrage montrent que bien que la digestibilité de la matière sèche, des protéines brutes, des fibres brutes et de l'extrait sans azote soient significativement différentes (P <0,05) d'un traitement à l'autre, il n'y avait pas de différence significative (P> 0,05) dans le total de nutriments digestibles à travers les régimes. Pour la phase de finition, au fur et à mesure que le niveau de 'CMWPPM' augmentait dans les régimes alimentaires, le 'CP', les 'FC', les cendres, les lipides, l'NFE et le TDN diminuaient au fil des traitements. Par conséquent, il est conclu que le niveau d'inclusion de 'CMWPPM' dans l'alimentation des poulets de chair dépasse 20% pour une économie optimale de la conversion des aliments lors de la phase de finition ; tandis que les oiseaux peuvent être nourris avec des aliments contenant 30% de taux d'inclusion alimentaire de 'CMWPPM' avec une bonne économie de conversion alimentaire lors de la phase de démarrage.
