The goal of this study is to elucidate the effect the particle moment of inertia (MOI) has on the dynamics of spherical particles rising in a quiescent and turbulent fluid. To this end, we performed experiments with varying density ratios $\varGamma$ , the ratio of the particle density and fluid density, ranging from $0.37$ up to $0.97$ . At each $\varGamma$ the MOI was varied by shifting mass between the shell and the centre of the particle to vary $I^*$ (the particle MOI normalised by the MOI of a particle with the same weight and a uniform mass distribution). Helical paths are observed for low, and ‘three-dimensional (3-D) chaotic’ trajectories at higher values of $\varGamma$ . The present data suggest no influence of $I^*$ on the critical value for this transition $0.42<\varGamma _{{crit}}<0.52$ . For the ‘3-D chaotic’ rise mode, we identify trends of decreasing particle drag coefficient ( $C_d$ ) and amplitude of oscillation with increasing $I^*$ . Due to limited data it remains unclear if a similar dependence exists in the helical regime as well. Path oscillations remain finite for all cases studied and no ‘rectilinear’ mode is encountered, which may be the consequence of allowing for a longer transient distance in the present compared with earlier work. Rotational dynamics did not vary significantly between quiescent and turbulent surroundings, indicating that for the present configuration these are predominantly wake driven.

Abstract Considering the thermodynamical fluid mechanics in the gain medium and laser kinetic processes, a three-dimensional theoretical model of an exciplex-pumped Cs vapor laser with longitudinal and transverse gas flow is established. The slope efficiency of laser calculated by the model shows good agreement with the experimental data. The comprehensive three-dimensional distribution of temperature and particle density of Cs is depicted. The influence of pump intensity, wall temperature, and fluid velocity on the laser output performance is also simulated and analyzed in detail, suggesting that a higher wall temperature can guarantee a higher output laser power while causing a more significant heat accumulation in the cell. Compared with longitudinal gas flow, the transverse flow can improve the output laser power by effectively removing the generated heat accumulation and alleviating the temperature gradient in the cell.

The present article deals with the critical value pc of the three-dimensional bootstrap percolation. We will check the behavior of pc for different lengths of the lattice and additionally we will scale pc in the limit of an infinite lattice.

In this study, partially debonded spherical particles in a particulate composite are analyzed by three-dimensional finite element method to investigate their load carrying capacities, and the way to replace a debonded particle with an equivalent inclusion is examined. The variation in Young’s modulus and Poisson’s ratio of a composite with the debonded angle was evaluated for different particle arrangements and particle volume fractions, which in turn compared with the results derived from the equivalent inclusion method. Consequently, it was found that by replacing a debonded particle with an equivalent orthotropic one, the macroscopic behavior of the damaged composite could be reproduced so long as the interaction between neighboring particles is negligible.

Abstract Accurate description of cuttings slippage in the gas-liquid phase is of great significance for wellbore cleaning and the control accuracy of bottom hole pressure during MPD. In this study, the wellbore bubble flow environment was simulated by a constant pressure air pump and the transparent wellbore, and the settling characteristics of spherical particles under different gas volume concentrations were recorded and analyzed by highspeed photography. A total of 225 tests were conducted to analyze the influence of particle diameter (1–12mm), particle density (2700–7860kg/m^3), liquid viscosity and bubble volume concentration on particle settling velocity. Gas drag force is defined to quantitatively evaluate the bubble’s resistance to particle slippage. The relationship between bubble drag coefficient and particle Reynolds number is obtained by fitting the experimental results. An explicit settling velocity equation is established by introducing Archimedes number. This explicit equation with an average relative error of only 8.09% can directly predict the terminal settling velocity of the sphere in bubble containing Newtonian fluids. The models for predicting bubble drag coefficient and the terminal settling velocity are valid with particle Reynolds number ranging from 0.05 to 167 and bubble volume concentration ranging from 3.0% to 20.0%. Besides, a trial-and-error procedure and an illustrative example are presented to show how to calculate bubble drag coefficient and settling velocity in bubble containing fluids. The results of this study will provide the theoretical basis for wellbore cleaning and accurate downhole pressure to further improve the performance of MPD in treating gas influx.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to find the multiple branches of the three-dimensional flow of Cu-Al2 O3/water rotating hybrid nanofluid perfusing a porous medium over the stretching/shrinking surface. The extended model of Darcy due to Forchheimer and Brinkman has been considered to make the hybrid nanofluid model over the pores by considering the porosity and permeability effects. Design/methodology/approach The Tiwari and Das model with the thermophysical properties of spherical particles for efficient dynamic viscosity of the nanoparticle is used. The linear similarity transformations are applied to convert the partial differential equations into ordinary differential equations (ODEs). The system of governing ODEs is solved by using the three-stage Lobatto IIIa scheme in MATLAB for evolving parameters. Findings The system of governing ODEs produces dual branches. A unique stable branch is identified with help of stability analysis. The reduced heat transfer rate has been shown to increase with the reduced ϕ2 in both branches. Further, results revealed that the presence of multiple branches depends on the ranges of porosity, suction and stretching/shrinking parameters for the particular value of the rotating parameter. Originality/value Dual branches of the three-dimensional flow of Cu-Al2 O3/water rotating hybrid nanofluid have been found. Therefore, stability analysis of the branches is also conducted to know which branch is appropriate for the practical applications. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this research is novel and there is no previously published work relevant to the present study.

This paper presents a new proposition on how to derive mathematical formulas that describe an unknown Probability Density Function (PDF3) of the spherical radii (r3) of particles randomly placed in non-transparent materials. We have presented two attempts here, both of which are based on data collected from a random planar cross-section passed through space containing three-dimensional nodules. The first attempt uses a Probability Density Function (PDF2) the form of which is experimentally obtained on the basis of a set containing two-dimensional radii (r2). These radii are produced by an intersection of the space by a random plane. In turn, the second solution also uses an experimentally obtained Probability Density Function (PDF1). But the form of PDF1 has been created on the basis of a set containing chord lengths collected from a cross-section.The most important finding presented in this paper is the conclusion that if the PDF1 has proportional scopes, the PDF3 must have a constant value in these scopes. This fact allows stating that there are no nodules in the sample space that have particular radii belonging to the proportional ranges the PDF1.

Abstract Performing isothermal-isochoric Monte Carlo simulations, I examine the types of clusters that dumbbell-like one–patch particles form in thin space between two parallel walls, assuming that each particle is synthesized through the merging of two particles, one non-attracting and the other attracting for which, for example, the inter-particle interaction is approximated by the DLVO model. The shape of these dumbbell-like particles is controlled by the ratio of the diameters q of the two spherical particles and by the dimensionless distance l between them. Using a modified Kern–Frenkel potential, I examine the dependence of the cluster shape on l and q. Large island-like clusters are created when q < 1. With increasing q, the clusters become chain-like. When q increases further, elongated clusters and regular polygonal clusters are created. In hte simulations, the cluster shape becomes three-dimensional with increasing l because the thickness of the thin system increases proportionally to l.

In the current investigation, numerical study of a thermal jet of asymmetric (rectangular and elliptical) and axisymmetric (circular) geometry was investigated with variable density to verify the impact of the ratio of density and geometry on the generation of entropy. The central jet was brought to different temperatures (194, 293 and 2110 K) to obtain density ratios (0.66, 1 and 7.2) identical to a mixture jet ((Air-CO2), (Air-Air) and (Air-He)), respectively. Solving the three-dimensional numerical resolution of the Navier Stocks for turbulent flow permanent enclosed on the turbulence model K-εstandard was made. The results acquired are compared with that carried out in previous experimental studies, where it was concluded that, the axisymmetric (circular) geometry increases the entropy generation.
