ABSTRACTPlasma progesterone concentrations were measured over two collection periods from two groups of mature non-pregnant cows involved in a twin-breeding experiment. One group (T) consisted of cows obtained from private herds after having produced at least two sets of twins each; the other was a control group of similar ages and breeds. Yearling heifers from the same breeding experiment were also included. The mean progesterone concentration from cows in the T group was proportionally 0·83 of the value in control cows and the cow group effects were consistent in direction for samples obtained after single or double ovulations. Results were also consistent in early oestrous cycle (days 3 to 7, oestrus = day 0), mid cycle (days 8 to 13) but not late cycle (days 14 to 18). Concentrations were significantly higher in yearling heifers than in control cows. There was a trend for higher progesterone concentrations after double than after single ovulations assessed by rectal palpation, but differences were not significant.

ABSTRACT Progesterone was determined and identified in human peripheral blood during the preovulatory period of the menstrual cycle, by combined isotope derivative and recrystallization analysis. The mean concentration of progesterone in 1.095 ml of plasma obtained 9 days before ovulation was 0.084 μg/100 ml. However, the mean concentration of progesterone in 1.122 ml of plasma obtained 4 days before ovulation was 0.279 μg/100 ml. These data demonstrate a source of progesterone secretion other than the corpus luteum. The higher plasma-progesterone concentration 4 days before ovulation may indicate progesterone secretion of the ripening Graafian follicle of the ovary.

The gene expression in the canine oviduct, where oocyte maturation, fertilization, and early embryonic development occur, is still elusive. This study determined the oviductal expression of (PR), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), growth differentiation factor 9 (GDF-9), and bone morphogenetic protein 15 (BMP-15) during the canine oestrous cycle. Samples were collected from bitches at anoestrus (9), proestrus (7), oestrus (8), and dioestrus (11), after routine ovariohysterectomy and the ovarian surface structures and plasma progesterone concentration evaluated the physiological status of each donor. The oviductal cells were isolated and pooled. Total RNA was isolated, and gene expression was assessed by qPCR followed by analysis using the t-test and ANOVA. The PR mRNA increased (P < 0.05) from the anoestrus to dioestrus with the plasma progesterone concentration (r = 0.8). COX-2 mRNA expression was low in the anoestrus and proestrus, and negligible in the oestrus, while it was around 10-fold higher (P < 0.05) in the dioestrus. The GDF-9 mRNA was expressed during all phases of the oestrous cycle and was most abundant (P < 0.05) during oestrus phase. The BMP-15 mRNA decreased (P < 0.05) in the anoestrus and proestrus phases. Thus, the transcripts were differentially expressed in a stage-dependent manner, suggesting the importance of oestrous cycle regulation for successful reproduction in dogs.

Purpose: To evaluate and compare corneal hysteresis (CH), corneal resistance factor (CRF), and central corneal thickness (CCT), measurements were taken between a healthy population (controls), patients diagnosed with glaucoma (DG), and glaucoma suspect patients due to ocular hypertension (OHT), family history of glaucoma (FHG), or glaucoma-like optic discs (GLD). Additionally, Goldmann-correlated intraocular pressure (IOPg) and corneal-compensated IOP (IOPcc) were compared between the different groups of patients. Methods: In this prospective analytical-observational study, a total of 1065 patients (one eye of each) were recruited to undergo Ocular Response Analyzer (ORA) testing, ultrasound pachymetry, and clinical examination. Corneal biomechanical parameters (CH, CRF), CCT, IOPg, and IOPcc were measured in the control group (n = 574) and the other groups: DG (n = 147), FHG (n = 78), GLD (n = 90), and OHT (n = 176). We performed a variance analysis (ANOVA) for all the dependent variables according to the different diagnostic categories with multiple comparisons to identify the differences between the diagnostic categories, deeming p < 0.05 as statistically significant. Results: The mean CH in the DG group (9.69 mmHg) was significantly lower compared to controls (10.75 mmHg; mean difference 1.05, p < 0.001), FHG (10.70 mmHg; mean difference 1.00, p < 0.05), GLD (10.63 mmHg; mean difference 0.93, p < 0.05) and OHT (10.54 mmHg; mean difference 0.84, p < 0.05). No glaucoma suspects (FHG, GLD, OHT groups) presented significant differences between themselves and the control group (p = 1.00). No statistically significant differences were found in the mean CRF between DG (11.18 mmHg) and the control group (10.75 mmHg; mean difference 0.42, p = 0.40). The FHG and OHT groups showed significantly higher mean CRF values (12.32 and 12.41 mmHg, respectively) than the DG group (11.18 mmHg), with mean differences of 1.13 (p < 0.05) and 1.22 (p < 0.001), respectively. No statistically significant differences were found in CCT in the analysis between DG (562 μ) and the other groups (control = 556 μ, FHG = 576 μ, GLD = 569 μ, OHT = 570 μ). The means of IOPg and IOPcc values were higher in the DG patient and suspect groups than in the control group, with statistically significant differences in all groups (p < 0.001). Conclusion: This study presents corneal biomechanical values (CH, CRF), CCT, IOPg, and IOPcc for diagnosed glaucoma patients, three suspected glaucoma groups, and a healthy population, using the ORA. Mean CH values were markedly lower in the DG group (diagnosed with glaucoma damage) compared to the other groups. No significant difference was found in CCT between the DG and control groups. Unexpectedly, CRF showed higher values in all groups than in the control group, but the difference was only statistically significant in the suspect groups (FHG, GLD, and OHT), not in the DG group.

ABSTRACT Plasma progesterone concentrations were compared in cyclic (n = 12), pregnant (n =12), oestradiol-induced pseudopregnant (n=12) and hysterectomized gilts (n=10) between days 8 and 27 after oestrus. The results were grouped into periods covering days 8–13, 14–20 and 21–27 and analysed by least-squares analysis of variance. Plasma progesterone concentrations were significantly (P<0·001) higher in hysterectomized compared with other groups between days 8 and 13. Progesterone concentrations declined rapidly after day 14 in cyclic females and gradually in the other groups. Throughout the third and fourth weeks the mean progesterone concentrations for hysterectomized animals were consistently higher than for pseudopregnant animals (P<0·05). The pregnant group means were below but not significantly different from the hysterectomized means in both of the last two periods. The greater progesterone concentrations in hysterectomized gilts indicated that secretion is high without any conceptus-produced or -mediated luteotrophin, and corpora lutea in cyclic, pregnant or pseudopregnant gilts may never reach full secretory potential. Aim-Objectives: Vitiligo is an acquired idiopathic disease which progresses with melanocyte destruction and is clinically characterized by depigmented lesions of unknown etiology. Vitiligo may be coexistence with a autoimmune and endocrine disorders. This study examined the sT3, fT4, TSH, Anti-TPO, Anti-Tg, Vitamin B12 and fasting blood glucose (FBG) values, and thrombocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio(TLR), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio(NLR), the mean platelet volume(MPV) the correlation of depigmented lesions with the extent of body involvement sites(IS). Materials and Method: The study enrolled 67 patients aged 0‒65 who were diagnosed with non-segmental generalized vitiligo and in whom an increase in lesions had been observed in the last six months. The IS of the lesions in the patients were evaluated as IS ˂10%(1st group), 10%‒20% (2nd group), 20% - 30%(3rd group), 30% - 40%(4th group), 40% ‒50 %(5th group), and ˃50%(6th group). The control group consisted of patients who had presented to the outpatient clinic having had no history of vitiligo detected in themselves nor in their families. Results: No significant correlation was found between IS and sT3, fT4, TSH, Anti-TPO, Anti-Tg, Vit. B12, PBG or MPV. A moderately positive correlation was found between IS and duration (p <0.05) and a mildly positive correlation between IS and NLR and TLR (p <0.05). Conclusion: This study show that every patient diagnosed with vitiligo, independent of the IS, should undergo examination for autoimmune disease. A mild positive correlation between VTA and NLO-TLO was found to be an indicator of increased inflammation in vitiligo patients as the extent of lesions increased.

This investigation was designed to determine whether or not the technique of intrauterine insemination affects the length of the subsequent oestrous cycle. Dorper ewes (n=31) were divided into treatment and control groups. All the ewes were synchronised using 40 mg fluorogestone acetate intravaginal sponges for 14 d and 300 IU pregnant mare serum gonadotrophin on the day of sponge removal. A standard semen diluent was deposited laparoscopically in each uterine horn of ewes in the treatment, group. Teaser rams were used to detect oestrus. Progesterone profiles were used to confirm oestrus. The mean oestrous cycle length of 17,83 ± 0,69 d for the group in which the diluent was deposited by laparoscopy did not differ significantly (P0,l) from the 18,36±2,11 d of the control group. The technique of laparoscopic insemination did not influence the length of subsequent oestrous cycles.

In this comparative study with a control group of prisoners, psychiatric morbidity was measured in two groups of sentenced prisoners, each group completing the GHQ-30 and 21-item Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Group 1 consisted of 40 segregated HIV-positive prisoners and group 2 a matched control group in the main prison who had no history of HIV seropositivity. All members of group 1 had a history of intravenous drug abuse. The mean GHQ-30 and BDI scores were significantly higher in group 1, and 90% of group 1 were psychiatric ‘cases’ compared with just over 42% of group 2. Levels of psychiatric morbidity present in a third group, consisting of HIV-positive prisoners who had not been segregated (prison authorities were unaware of their seropositivity) are an interesting pointer for further research.

A case-control study conducted in the Department of Dermatology and Venereology of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, Dhaka from July 2008- December 2010. A total 60 female patients of telogen effluvium attending in outpatient department (OPD) were enrolled in the study with 30 having hair loss considered as case (Group-A) and another 30 females had no history of hair loss were considered as control (Group-B). The study included 60 patients and the mean age were 25.4±7 years ranging from 18 to 42 years in group A and 24.8±5.6 years ranging from 17 to 36 years in group B. Maximum number was found in the age group of 21- 30 years in both groups and nearly three fourth (73.4%) patients were unmarried in group A and 18(60.0%) in group B. Most of the patients were student in both groups, which were 21(70.0%) and 17(56.7%) in group A and group B respectively and majority of the the patients were HSC level in both groups, 15(50.0%) and 14(46.7%) in Group A and Group B respectively. Most of the patients came from middle class, which were 20(66.7%) and 16(53.3%) in group A and group B respectively. The mean serum ferritin were 18.8±8.1 g/L ranging from 4.5 to 36.54 g/L and 36.6±9.9 mg/L ranging from 18.46 to 56.3 mg/ L in group A and group B respectively. The mean Hb level was 11.5±1.4 gm/dl ranging from 8.5 to 14.0 gm/dl in group A and 12.8±1.1 gm/dl ranging from 10.5 to 14.5 gm/dl in group B. The mean difference of Hb level was statistically significant (p<0.05) between two groups in unpaired t-test. It can be concluded that low iron level is associated with telogen effluvium in women. Abstract Objective: To compare the effect of clockwise and counterclockwise torque on the primary stability of a mini-implant with a lever-arm–shaped upper structure. Materials and Methods: Twenty-four white rabbits were used for this study. Two screw-type mini-implants were placed in each tibia. In all, 96 screws were inserted. Two weeks later, a 2-N force was applied to the mini-implants without an upper structure in eight rabbits (control group). The mini-implants of the other 16 rabbits were loaded with an upper structure (experimental group). In the experimental group, the two left mini-implants were loaded in a clockwise direction (CW group) and the two right implants were loaded in a counterclockwise direction (CCW group). The rabbits were sacrificed at 1 week or 8 weeks after loading in both control and experimental groups. The removal torque value (RTV) was measured in 15 of 16 mini-implants in each group and the remaining implant was processed for histologic examination. Results: At 1 week there were no significant differences in the mean RTV between the control, CW, and CCW groups. At 8 weeks, the RTV was higher in the control and experimental groups than in the respective 1-week groups. At 8 weeks, there were no significant differences in the RTV between the control and CW groups, but the CCW group showed a lower RTV. Conclusions: CCW torque can decrease the stability of a mini-implant, whereas a CW torque has no effect.

Bacteria have been implicated in recurrent choledocholithiasis associated with endoscopic sphincterotomy (EST). This study was designed to clarify whether bacterial examination of bile provides information useful in predicting the risk of recurrence of choledocholithiasis in patients undergoing EST. Bacteria in bile collected via a duodenoscope before cholangiography were cultured. We compared bacterial isolates and quantity among 41 patients with choledocholithiasis (7 with and 34 without a history of recurrent choledocholithiasis) who had undergone EST more than 3 months previously and 13 control patients with no evidence of pancreatobiliary disease. The bile samples were cultured under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. The bacterial quantity was expressed as the mean logarithm of the number of colony forming units (CFU)/ml. Furthermore, cholescintigraphic studies of bile flow were performed with the use of 99 mTC-HIDA to study the clinical implication of these variables. No bacteria were detected in 10 of the 13 patients in the control group. In the other three control patients the bacterial count was 2.2 log CFU/ml or less. The mean bacterial count was significantly higher in patients with recurrence than in those without recurrence. Cholescintigraphy revealed a trend toward a higher number of isolates and a higher bacterial count in bile in patients with delayed bile passage than in those with good passage. The results suggest that an increased number of biliary isolates and an increased bacterial count indicate decreased bile flow in patients with choledocholithiasis who are being followed up after EST. These variables may potentially serve as indicators of the risk of stone recurrence. Especially when the bacterial count is higher than 7.0 log CFU/ml, the risk of a decrease in bile flow and an increased stone recurrence would be possibly found.
