Factors affecting gestation length in goats and the effect of gestation period on kid survival

Data on 1468 pregnancies and 2356 newborn goat kids of six genetic groups under intensive management were utilized to determine some genetic and non-genetic factors affecting gestation length, and to assess the relationship between gestation length and survival of kids to 25 days of age. The study revealed significant (P < 0·01) effect of breed of dam, litter weight, breeding season and parity on gestation length. Number of kids born and sex of kids were not a significant source of variation affecting this trait. Granadina goats had the shortest gestation (149·0±0·31 days), whereas Toggenburg (151·7±0·28 days) and Alpine (151·4±0·46 days) had the longest. Litter weight and gestation period were related curvilinearly in summer and linearly in autumn. Gestation of goats bred in summer was 1 day longer (P < 0·01) than those mated in the autumn. There was a progressive reduction of gestation length as parity increased (151·3±0·24, 150·6±0·17 and 149·9±0·39 days for 1, 2·6 and > 7 kiddings, respectively). The mean survival rate of kids gestated < 148 days and 148–;152 days were 78±2 and 87±1, respectively, and these were significantly lower (P < 0·05) than the survival rate of kids gestated 152–156 days and > 156 days (94±1 and 95±2). In conclusion, prolonged gestation (152–160 days) in goats was beneficial because it resulted in heavier litters at birth and higher viability of neonatal kids.

This study aims to test the influence of the senior management’s support as a moderating variable on the relationship between the independent factors (Training, Empowerment, Motivation and Communication) and the dependent variable (Performance of Employees). (SEM-AMOS) is used to test the impact of the moderating variable. Where it is depended on the method of sampling or analysis of what is known as multiple-groups analysis. The paragraphs of the senior management’s support variable are collected and divided into two groups according to the mean of the total paragraphs. In addition, according to the relative weights given to the paragraphs of the questionnaire, using a five- point’s Likert scale: 1= strongly disagree to 5 = strongly agree. The first group consisted of the grades less than the mean and it is considered as the group which is non-supporters of the existence of support. While the second group consisted of the grades higher than the mean and considered as the group which is a supporter of the existence of support. The study found that the model of study in the presence of the support of the senior management’s is appropriate for the second group and inappropriate in light of the lack of support by the senior management’s support for the first group.

In seven anesthetized tracheotomized cats we studied the acute respiratory effects of SO2 inhalation at different steady-state levels of arterial CO2 tension (Paco2). During room air breathing, SO2 (0.05%) addition caused a progressive reduction in tidal volume (VT) and increases in both respiratory frequency (f) and pulmonary resistance (RL). Atropine sulfate abolished the bronchoconstriction response to SO2 and thus permitted the study of the influence of SO2 on VT and f in the absence of constricted airways. Despite marked reductions in the VT VS. PaCO2 relationships with SO2 exposure after atropine, the relationship between pulmonary ventilation (VE) and PaCO2 was not signifcantly altered. This was the case since SO2 caused solely a reduction in inspiratory duration (Ti), affecting neither the mean rate of rise of inspiratory activity (i.e., VT/Ti) nor the relationship between Ti and breath duration. Thus, airways irritation with SO2 produced rapid, shallow breathing characterized by a shortening of inspiratory and total respiratory cycle times with no change in the rate of development of inspiratory activity. The findings suggest an influence exclusively concerned with the timing of inspiration. Perhaps premature onset of inspiratory activity accounts for the observed effects.

The past few years have seen the development in Great Britain of the ‘contemporary comparison’ method for evaluating progeny tests of dairy sires (Macarthur, 1954; Robertson, Stewart and Ashton 1956). The final overall figure attached to a sire is the mean difference between the yield of his daughters and that of other heifers milking in the same herd in the same year, with due regard for the numbers of animals in the two groups. Although it has some imperfections in special cases, this is probably the most informative simple method of evaluating a sire for yield and, fortunately, one which could be easily integrated with the existing recording system. The method has been turned into a simple routine in the Bureau of Records of the Milk Marketing Board and several thousand bulls have now been evaluated. In this paper, we shall be mostly concerned to use this material to investigate the heritabilities of milk yield and fat content and the relationship between the two in the different breeds. The information that we shall use consists, for each bull, of the mean contemporary comparison, with its effective ‘weight’, and the average fat percentage of the daughters. Before we deal with the observed results, we should go into rather more detail into the nature of these two figures and into the factors affecting them.

This study examined changes in genetic and phenotypic factors affecting stillborn piglets (SB). Over 15 years, 76 851 litter records were available from Large White (LW), Landrace (LR) and Duroc (DU) sows to investigate SB. The analyses focussed on trends over time in SB and the changes in the number of SB per litter, in factors associated with SB and in genetic parameters for SB. Breed differences were identified with DU producing more SB than the white breeds (mean of 1.46 ± 0.02 vs 1.11 ± 0.01 and 1.07 ± 0.01). However, maximum differences between levels of each factor were 0.73 and 0.65 SB for parity and herd, respectively. Over the 15 years studied, SB had increased by 0.2 piglets accompanied by an increase in the total numbers of piglets born per litter (TB) of ~0.5 piglets. This increase in SB was driven by higher occurrence of more than two SB within a single litter. The effect of TB on SB changed over time with solutions of 0.127 ± 0.002 and 0.150 ± 0.002 SB/TB in 1996 and 2010, respectively. Heritability estimates for SB ranged from 0.06 ± 0.01 to 0.09 ± 0.01 for alternative models and time periods. The unfavourable genetic correlation between SB and TB of 0.46 ± 0.03 based on all data available was slightly lower using only data from the first 5 years (0.38 ± 0.07) versus using data from the last 5 years (0.46 ± 0.06). However, this increase in phenotypic and genetic associations between SB and TB over time may be larger in populations that have observed a larger increase in TB.

ABSTRACTThe relationship between litter size at birth and litter weight at weaning is curvilinear, with an intermediate litter size resulting in the heaviest litter weight at weaning. Relative to feral mice, the mean and variation for litter size at birth was larger for domesticated mice which had been selected for fertility and crossbred. Consequently, some of the litters from the crossbred domesticated mice were larger than the litter size at birth which optimized litter weight at weaning, primarily due to increased pre-weaning mortality. If litter weight at weaning is to be optimized by indirect selection for litter size at birth, the variation around an intermediate optimum litter size at birth could be most effectively reduced by negative assortative mating.

Introduction: Aircrew are repetitively exposed to positive Gz acceleration in fighter flying. Factors affecting +Gz tolerance vary among individuals and are determined by both modifiable and non-modifiable factors. Some of the non-modifiable factors influencing +Gz tolerance are age, gender, and height. The present study was undertaken to understand the relationship of these variables with relaxed +Gz tolerance. Material and Methods: The study involved a retrospective analysis of existing database of the high-performance human centrifuge at the Institute of Aerospace Medicine. Relevant data from 70 non-aircrew subjects were included for the study. Of these, 39 were male and 31 were female. The age and height varied from 27 to 38 years and 157 to 187 cm, respectively. The data were analyzed using Microsoft Office Excel® to find the correlation between age and height with relaxed +Gz tolerance. Relaxed +Gz tolerance of men and women was compared using unpaired t-test. Significance was set at P < 0.05. Results: The mean age, height, and relaxed +Gz tolerance of males were found to be 30.25 ± 4.3 years, 172.58 ± 6.5 cm, and 4.89 ± 0.67G, respectively, whereas those of females were 27.28 ± 3.36 years, 158.46 ± 6.78 cm, and 4.4 ± 0.85G, respectively. In both males and females, age and height showed no correlation with relaxed +Gz tolerance. However, the relaxed +Gz tolerance was found to be higher in males and this difference was statistically different (P = 0.008). Conclusion: Age and height showed no correlation with relaxed +Gz tolerance in both males and females nonaircrew subjects. Males exhibited a statistically significant, higher relaxed +Gz tolerance as compared to females.

A total of 135 kittens from 22 kindlings were used to determine the relationship between gestation length (GL) and some preweaning litter traits alongside the weight of their 12 dams. Average daily gain at 21 days (ADG21), average litter weight at birth (ALWB), kindling to weaning viability (KWV), litter size at birth{L.SB), litter size at 21 days (LS21), litter weight at 21 days(LW21), litter weight at birth (LWAB), and still birth number (SBN) when subjected to multiple regression analysis revealed non-significant t-test value with GL. However, Average litter weight at 21 days (ALW21) was highly significant (P<0.01) suggesting that such can be used to predict GL. Weight of doe (WOD) was highly significant (P<0.01) showing that such parameter is important for predicting GL. A high R2 value was obtained indicating that the variability in GL is explained by the linearity of the preweaning litter traits and WOD. However the correlation coefficient R, (0.89) revealed a high degree of association between the preweaning litter traits in the rabbits and the weight of doe in a linear form. The F-value was significant at P<0.05 indicating that WOD and the preweaning litter traits in rabbits have significant contribution to the variation in GL. The correlations among traits were positive and significant for majority of the traits, which include live birth number (LBN), ADG21, ALW21, KWV, LS21, and LW21. However SBN had negative correlation with other traits.

Sexual satisfaction is one of the factors affecting interpersonal relationships. The purpose of this research was to determine the relationship between sexual satisfaction and marital commitment among married women in Neyshabur, Iran in 2019. This cross-sectional study was conducted on 330 married women. The instruments used were Larsson sexual satisfaction and marital commitment Adams questionnaire. The collected data were entered in to SPSS software with version 20 and using descriptive statistic methods, The Pearson’s correlation analysis and ANOVA tests were used. The mean age of women was 23.92±3.96 years. In addition, 7(2.12%), 37(11.21%), 148(44.84%) and 138(41.81%) of women showed zero, low, moderate, and high levels of sexual satisfaction. Marital commitment was positively correlated with the overall sexual satisfaction (r = 0.67, P < 0.001). Moreover, marital commitment was associated with High sexual satisfaction n (r = .69, p < .001), Medium sexual satisfaction (r=.52, p < .001), Law of sexual satisfaction (r=.39, p < .001) Lack of sexual satisfaction (r=.19, p < .001), subscales of sexual satisfaction. Women with shorter marriage levels had higher sexual satisfaction and marital commitment. Therefore, health planners should adopt strategies to increase sexual satisfaction, marital commitment in women with longer marriage levels.

Abstract Stocking with eggs has been widely used as a management measure to support degraded salmonid stocks. In Finland, Atlantic salmon and both sea-migrating and lake-migrating brown trout are stocked as eggs, alevins, fry, parr, and smolt, whereas trout are also stocked as mature fish. The aim of this stocking is to improve catches and to support collapsed spawning stocks. We assessed the success of stocking with brown trout eggs in a study of 17 Finnish boreal forest rivers, of which 9 were subject to egg stocking. All rivers contained some naturally spawning trout. In 16 rivers, including non-stocking years and unstocked rivers, egg stocking did not increase the total (wild and stocked) density of 0-year-old parr. However, those rivers with higher existing trout densities in non-stocking years seemed to benefit most from stocking, suggesting some role of river-specific extrinsic factors affecting egg-to-parr survival. In one river monitored for 14 years, only a weak correlation was found between the total density of 0-year-old parr and the number of eggs stocked. However, in nine parr samples from five rivers, the mean proportion of parr derived from stocked eggs was 40%. The mean survival to first autumn parr of egg-stocked and wild individuals was 1.0 and 3.3%, respectively. Probable reasons for the detected low to moderate impact of egg-stocking are (i) large variation in total parr density between years and rivers, (ii) small number of stocked eggs, (iii) placing egg boxes and egg pockets in unsuitable microhabitats, and (iv) unsuitable emergence time of egg-stocked individuals, or other extrinsic factors creating extra mortality. We recommend field and laboratory experiments to improve and standardize stocking methods, and monitoring the connection of wild spawning stocks and parr recruitment. Finally, we encourage fishery authorities to create clear management goals for threatened wild salmonid stocks.

AbstractGenetic and non-genetic factors affecting survival during the post-weaning period from 3 to 12 months of age were assessed in 823 kids (217 Black Bengal, 410 Jamunapari × Black Bengal and 196 Beetal × Black Bengal) born during 1981-86. The overall survival rates during 3 to 6 and 6 to 12 months of age were 79·22 (s.e. 4·06) and 82·02 (s.e. 5·49)% respectively. Variation in survival rate during 3 to 6 months of age was significant due to season of their birth (P < 0·01) and birth weight (P < 0·05). Survival rate during 6 to 12 months of age varied due to genetic group (P < 0·01), sex (P < 0·05) and birth weight (P < 0·05). Type of birth (litter size), dam's weight at kidding and filial generation had no significant effect on survival rate during the post-weaning period. Birth weight of kids had a positive linear relationship with their survivability during post-weaning period. Summer-born kids had significantly lower survival rates from 3 to 6 months of age compared with those born in the winter and monsoon periods. Heritability estimates for survival rates during the post-weaning period were not significantly different from zero.
