The term Homemaker has been used to describe roles which range from a friendly visitor, to a teaching role, to that of a domestic or nursing aide (Canadian Council of Social Development, 1971). To avoid any confusion the Homemakers referred to in this article are essentially support workers with a teaching orientation. Their role is to prevent breakdown in the family unit by acting as a resource to the parent in a range of problem areas, but with a specific focus on child rearing. They aim to protect, restore or improve family functioning in the area of physical, social and emotional health. In some situations they may perform practical tasks to help improve the quality of life in the home, but generally their main task is to assist the parent to acquire the necessary skills.

‘Connecting with Young Men’, Unit 6 in ENGAGE, Ireland’s National Men’s Health Training programme was developed to support service providers to engage young in mental health and related services. This study evaluated the impact of Unit 6 on front line service providers’ knowledge, skills, capacity, and practice pre and immediately post-training via questionnaire (n=206). At 1-month post-training interviews were conducted with youth workers (n=11), SPHE (social and emotional health curriculum) teachers (n=3), and sports personnel (n=3) (12-40 mins) to explore their experience of the training and its impact on practice. Overall, feedback regarding training satisfaction was largely positive (8.43±1.43/10). Participants self-reported level of knowledge (p=0.000), skills (p=0.000), capacity to engage (p<0.003) and identify priorities for young men (p<0.001), and success at convincing other service providers within (p<0.001) and beyond (p<0.000) their organization to prioritize engaging young men increased immediately post-training. Nota-bly, 57.3% of service providers said that they would integrate the training into their work practice. Critical components of Unit 6 included (a) the focus on understanding gender as a dynamic construct, (b) the use of experiential and interactive sessions, and (c) the integration of ongoing reflective practice. The provi-sion of more practical tips on ‘how’ to initiate and build relationships with young men as well as including young men’s voices would strengthen the training. Unit 6 has been effective in building capacity among service providers to engage young men. While assessing the longer-term impact of the training on practice is recommended, these findings have implications for those who wish to develop gender-sensitive services for young men elsewhere.

The aim is to identify parents’ (legal representatives’) satisfaction with the quality of medical care provided to their disabled children to improve this type of service further. Materials and methods. A sociological survey was conducted of 506 legal representatives of minors (aged from birth to 17 years) with the status of a disabled child. The study design is single-center, non-randomized, uncontrolled. Results. An analysis of the living conditions of a disabled child in the family, the parents’ assessment of his health status, the problems arising in the registration of disability, in the provision of medical and rehabilitation assistance, and issues of medical and social support made it possible to determine the position of this part of the child population in current legal and medical and social conditions. The main problems were the collection of a large number of documents when registering a disability, a long wait for the day of examination, the remoteness of the medical and social examination bureau, the lack of specialist doctors, problems with obtaining subsidized drugs, the lack of consideration of the individual needs of the child when conducting unique rehabilitation programs, the need to apply at the same time to various organizations and departments, violation of rights in the provision of medical services to a disabled child. Conclusion. The obtained information is very significant for further improving the provision of medical and social assistance to disabled children and children with disabilities. The main task today is to develop mechanisms for implementing the declared rights and freedoms of persons with disabilities, the obligations assumed by the State concerning them.

Abstract Triple P is a parenting programme used in the youth healthcare practice of many Dutch municipalities to support parents in raising their children. According to international research, this Australian intervention is effective for parents with children up to the age of 12. It shows positive effects on parenting skills and on the reduction of both parents' child-rearing stress and their children's behavioural and emotional problems. Our study examined the effectiveness of Teen Triple P level 4: a training programme for parents of teenagers aged 10–16. The programme included five group sessions of 1.5–2 h each, as well as three individual (phone) consultations. Through a matching procedure, 103 parents who participated in Teen Triple P were compared in a quasi-experimental study with 397 parents in a control group. Compared with the control group, parents who received the Teen Triple P training reported a significant improvement in their parental practice. Now, they are more involved with their child, more responsive to the needs of the children, and they report fewer parent–child conflicts. Some positive differences in behavioural problems among adolescents, as reported by their parents, could be found among the experimental group. These findings remained the same at the follow-up.

The article is focused on the problems of diagnostics of the security and defense specialists by a specialist of social and socio-pedagogical work in family problems. It is determined that the problems of families of Ukraine security and defense specialists under the hybrid war and military conflict in the East of Ukraine conditions are both general and special in the context of creating social conditions addressing issues of concern to the family. They may be subject to the work of military and social specialists in their departments and social work in the community with families, if they are in difficult life circumstances. The social diagnosis criterion is the quality of life of the family, which is an objective and subjective criterion, implemented through a system of indicators at the level of a particular family and its member and the family at the level of society. These criteria include quality of life such as physical health, emotional health (eg, satisfaction, self-esteem, happiness), material well-being, work, creativity, relationships, security, direct involvement in a particular society, which we revealed through indicators for families of security and defense specialists. Socio-pedagogical methods of determining the family life quality for making a family social diagnosis are generalized. When using them, we have to keep in mind that the family should be studied in statics and dynamics. Prospects for further research are the development of methods for studying the family in psychology, law and social sciences.

The article is a selective presentation of problems related to family diagnosis in the context of the role of a family assistant as a diagnostician. The main task of a family assistant is to support the family in the implementation of the care and educational function and to help improve the quality of family life. This is possible if the needs of the family in this area are recognized. The author selectively describes the professional role of a family assistant and shows its unique importance in the implementation of the diagnostic function. She indicates the most important factors which describe the functionality of the family, replacing the notion of health and pathology of the family with the criteria for its proper functioning. The author also attempts to catalogue the most important diagnostic criteria for the assessment of family functioning and also selectively indicates the basic principles of diagnostic procedure. She constructs a family diagnosis model, taking into account basic diagnostic competences and points out the need to include them in the process of professionalization of the family assistant’s profession.
