AbstractWe studied the initial stages of the electrodeposition of Pb in the presence of chlorine ions on Cu(100), using an oblique-incidence optical reflectivity difference (OIRD) technique. The OI-RD results reveal that immediately following the underpotential deposition (UPD) of the first Pb monolayer, two different types of bulk-phase films grow depending upon the magnitude of overpotential and cyclic voltammetry (CV) scan rate. At low overpotentials and/or slow scan rates, we propose that a bulk-phase Pb film grows on top of the UPD monolayer. At high overpotentials and/or fast scan rates, either a PbO, PbCl2, or a rough Pb bulk-phase layer grows on top of the UPD layer such that the reflectivity difference signal from such a film has an opposite sign.

Reference method for simultaneous calibration of the three and more measurement standards for vertical angle measurement is developed. This method can to use for obtaining the systematic biases of the vertical angles measurements for each of the measuring standards relative of the horizontal plain was averaged from measurement results in time their calibration or comparison. For realization of the reference method was developed the autocollimationel electronic measurement standard for the automatization measurement of the vertical angles SeaLineZero_Standard™ (SLZ_S™). Summary standard deviation (k=1) of the vertical angle measurement relative the horizontal plane, from the results of their calibration by reference method, is not more 0,07ʺ…0,15ʺ. This result was obtained without the use the systematic biases, for each measurement standards, as measurements corrections (with opposite sign). The measuring standards, that were developed and researched, are necessary for obtaining the systematic biases of the vertical angle measurement for total stations and theodolites, that have the normed standard error 0,5ʺ and 1ʺ, when these instruments are calibrating.

AbstractUsing first-principles calculations, we investigate the possibility of realizing valley Hall effects (VHE) in blistered graphene sheets. We show that the Van Hove singularities (VHS) induced by structural deformations can give rise to interesting spin–valley Hall phenomena. The broken degeneracy of spin degree of freedom results in spin-filtered VH states and the valley conductivity have a Hall plateau of ±e2/2h, while the blistered structures with time-reversal symmetry show the VHE with the opposite sign of $$\sigma _{xy}^{K/K^{\prime}}$$ σ x y K / K ′ (e2/2h) in the two valleys. Remarkably, these results show that the distinguishable chiral valley pseudospin state can occur even in the presence of VHS induced spin splitting. The robust chiral spin–momentum textures in both massless and massive Dirac cones of the blistered systems indicate significant suppression of carrier back-scattering. Our study provides a different approach to realize spin-filtered and spin-valley contrasting Hall effects in graphene-based devices without any external field.

The X-ray photoelectron spectra of the 2p, 3s and 3p levels of iron in oxidized Clostridium pasteurianum ferredoxin indicate that the eight iron atoms in the molecule are indistinguishable. Their magnetic state is indicated both by core polarization splitting of the 3s electrons, and by ‘shake-up’ satellites on the 2p lines. Similar satellites are observed in the 2p lines of reduced Chromatium high-potential iron-sulphur proteins and oxidized spinach ferredoxin, indicating that there too the iron atoms are magnetic. The low observed magnetic susceptibility of these proteins is therefore due to spin-coupling between the iron atoms in the active centre.

We report on a novel method of low pressure chemical vapor deposition of polycrystalline silicon layers used for external gettering in silicon substrate for semiconductor applications. The proposed method allowed us to produce layers of polycrystalline silicon with pre-determined residual stress. The method is based on the deposition of a multilayer system formed by two layers. The first layer is intentionally designed to have tensile stress while the second layer has compressive stress. Opposite sign of the residual stresses of the individual layers enables to pre-determine the residual stress of the gettering stack. We used scanning electron microscopy for structural characterization of the layers and intentional contamination for demonstration of the gettering properties. Residual stress of the layers was calculated from the wafer curvature.

Previous work by many authors has led to the assumption that retamine might be (+)-12-hydroxysparteine. A partial synthesis of the enantiomorph of this compound has been effected by dehydration of (+)-13-hydroxylupanine and hydroboration of the product. The dehydration product consisted of two components that were separated by thin-layer chromatography and identified by the characteristics of their nuclear magnetic resonance (n.m.r.) spectra as Δ12,13-and Δ13,14-dehydrolupanine. Hydroboration of the Δ12,13-isomer gave rise to (−)-12-hydroxy-sparteine having, in thin-layer chromatography, the same Rf value as natural retamine and the same optical rotation numerically, although of opposite sign. The synthetic base had the same infrared and n.m.r. spectra as the alkaloid and the two had superimposable Debye–Scherrer patterns. Evidence is given showing the hydroxyl to be equatorial.
