AbstractMacrocycles are unique molecular structures extensively used in the design of catalysts, therapeutics and supramolecular assemblies. Among all reactions reported to date, systems that can produce macrocycles in high yield under high reaction concentrations are rare. Here we report the use of dynamic hindered urea bond (HUB) for the construction of urea macrocycles with very high efficiency. Mixing of equal molar diisocyanate and hindered diamine leads to formation of macrocycles with discrete structures in nearly quantitative yields under high concentration of reactants. The bulky N-tert-butyl plays key roles to facilitate the formation of macrocycles, providing not only the kinetic control due to the formation of the cyclization-promoting cis C = O/tert-butyl conformation, but also possibly the thermodynamic stabilization of macrocycles with weak association interactions. The bulky N-tert-butyl can be readily removed by acid to eliminate the dynamicity of HUB and stabilize the macrocycle structures.

Abstract A simple and efficient biphasic system consisting of H2O, tetrahydrofuran (THF), cyclohexane (CHX) and Al2(SO4)3 was employed to convert cellulose into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) with high yield of 71.2%. The real volumes of organic phase (Vorg) and aqueous phase (Vaque) of the biphasic system at reaction temperature were measured to found out that over 80% of the added H2O was dissolved into the organic phase at reaction temperature, leading to high Vorg/Vaque (over 44/1) and high concentration of Al2(SO4)3 (over 0.34 g/mL) in aqueous phase. The high concentration of Al2(SO4)3 in aqueous phase could efficiently catalyze the conversion of cellulose into HMF, while the high Vorg/Vaque could protect the formed HMF from rehydration, all of which are responsible for the high efficiency of the system on conversion of cellulose into HMF. The addition of CHX into reaction mixture could decrease the solubility of Al2(SO4)3 and H2O in the organic phase, which could improve the stability of HMF in the reaction system, resulting higher yield of HMF from cellulose. Because of the high Vorg/Vaque of the reaction system, one microemulsion-like system and liquid film catalytic model are proposed for the cellulose-to-HMF process.

Abstract. Current data on Jerusalem artichoke (topinambour) as a unique plant that has the ability to maximize the use of solar energy to accumulate in the tubers of the polysaccharide inulin in a very high concentration – more than 50% of their weight, are represented in the article. In this regard, topinambour is a record holder in the plant world. Inulin has the property of a prebiotic and promotes the reproduction of the most useful collibacillus – bifidumbacteria, as the second immune system of the human body. However, the composition of the intestinal microflora is normalized, 90% of which are bifidumbacteria. This makes it possible to use Jerusalem artichoke as an edible product in therapeutic practice in the intestinal diseases, immunodeficiency conditions, including diabetes mellitus, because fructose formed from inulin does not need to absorb insulin. For this purpose, the medicine “Biftop” was created in Ivano-Frankivsk Medical University; it includes topinambour powder and bifidumbacteria. Clinical trials performed have shown its high efficiency. In addition, dried Jerusalem artichoke extract can be used in the baking industry for baking diet bread, wheat buns, confectionery. Currently, the construction-and-installation and commissioning work on the production of dried fruits, including Jerusalem artichoke powder, which can be widely used for therapeutic-prophylactic purpose, is almost finished in the Ivano-Frankivsk region.

The visualization of organic macromolecules such as proteins, nucleic acids, viruses and virus components has reached its high degree of effectiveness owing to refinements and reliability of instruments and to the invention of methods for enhancing the structure of these materials within the electron image. The latter techniques have been most important because what can be seen depends upon the molecular and atomic character of the object as modified which is rarely evident in the pristine material. Structure may thus be displayed by the arts of positive and negative staining, shadow casting, replication and other techniques. Enhancement of contrast, which delineates bounds of isolated macromolecules has been effected progressively over the years as illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4 by these methods. We now look to the future wondering what other visions are waiting to be seen. The instrument designers will need to exact from the arts of fabrication the performance that theory has prescribed as well as methods for phase and interference contrast with explorations of the potentialities of very high and very low voltages. Chemistry must play an increasingly important part in future progress by providing specific stain molecules of high visibility, substrates of vanishing “noise” level and means for preservation of molecular structures that usually exist in a solvated condition.

The assessment of groundwater is essential for the estimation of suitability of water for safe use. An attempt has been made to study the groundwater of selected areas of Punjab (Sheikhupura & Sahiwal) and Sindh (Sindh, Jawar Dharki and Dharki), Pakistan. The results indicate that pH, color and odor were all within limits of WHO that is pH ranges 6.5–8.5, colorless and odorless, respectively. The high values of suspended solids were observed in the Sindh-1 and Dharki samples. Microbiologically only Sahiwal and Jawar Dharki were found fit for drinking purpose. Trace metals analysis of Sheikhupura-1 and Sindh-1 showed that values do not fall within limits of WHO for Iron. The ionic concentration analysis showed that high bicarbonate (HCO3-), ions are present in the samples of Sahiwal and Dharki; Sindh-1 and Jawar Dharki samples showed very high concentration for chloride ions, all samples were satisfactory level for sulphate (SO42-), sodium, magnesium and phosphate ions except samples of Sindh-1 and Jawar Dharki. High concentration of calcium and potassium ions was observed in samples of Sindh-1, while all other samples were found fit for drinking purposes in respect of nitrate, nitrite and ammonium ions. The high concentration of Fluoride was found only in Sheikhupura-2 samples.

β-Ketophosphonates with pentalenofurane fragments linked to the keto group were synthesized. The bulky pentalenofurane skeleton is expected to introduce more hindrance in the prostaglandin analogues of type III, greater than that obtained with the bicyclo[3.3.0]oct(a)ene fragments of prostaglandin analogues I and II, to slow down (retard) the inactivation of the prostaglandin analogues by oxidation of 15α-OH to the 15-keto group via the 15-PGDH pathway. Their synthesis was performed by a sequence of three high yield reactions, starting from the pentalenofurane alcohols 2, oxidation of alcohols to acids 3, esterification of acids 3 to methyl esters 4 and reaction of the esters 4 with lithium salt of dimethyl methanephosphonate at low temperature. The secondary compounds 6b and 6c were formed in small amounts in the oxidation reactions of 2b and 2c, and the NMR spectroscopy showed that their structure is that of an ester of the acid with the starting alcohol. Their molecular structures were confirmed by single crystal X-ray determination method for 6c and XRPD powder method for 6b.

Abstract To cryopreserve cells, it is essential to avoid intracellular ice formation during cooling and warming. One way to achieve this is to convert the water inside the cells into a non-crystalline glass. It is currently believed that to accomplish this vitrification, the cells must be suspended in a very high concentration (20–40%) of a glass-inducing solute, and subsequently cooled very rapidly. Herein, we report that this belief is erroneous with respect to the vitrification of one-cell rat embryos. In the present study, one-cell rat embryos were vitrified with 5 μL of EFS10 (a mixture of 10% ethylene glycol, 27% Ficoll, and 0.45 M sucrose) in cryotubes at a moderate cooling rate, and warmed at various rates. Survival was assessed according to the ability of the cells to develop into blastocysts and to develop to term. When embryos were vitrified at a 2,613 °C/min cooling rate and thawed by adding 1 mL of sucrose solution (0.3 M, 50 °C) at a warming rate of 18,467 °C/min, 58.1 ± 3.5% of the EFS10-vitrified embryos developed into blastocysts, and 50.0 ± 4.7% developed to term. These rates were similar to those of non-treated intact embryos. Using a conventional cryotube, we achieved developmental capabilities in one-cell rat embryos by rapid warming that were comparable to those of intact embryos, even using low concentrations (10%) of cell-permeating cryoprotectant and at low cooling rates.

The traditional hydrothermal method to prepare zeolite will inevitably use a large amount of water as a solvent, which will lead to higher autogenous pressure, low efficiency, and wastewater pollution. The solvent-free method can be used to synthesize various types of zeolites by mechanical mixing, grinding, and heating of solid raw materials, which exhibits the apparent advantages of high yield, low pollution, and high efficiency. This review mainly introduces the development process of solvent-free synthesis, preparation of hierarchical zeolite, morphology control, synthesis mechanism and applications of solvent-free methods. It can be believed that solvent-free methods will become a research focus and have enormous industrial application potential.

Perovskite-based electronic materials and devices such as perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have notoriously bad reproducibility, which greatly impedes both fundamental understanding of their intrinsic properties and real-world applications. Here, we report that organic iodide perovskite precursors can be oxidized to I2 even for carefully sealed precursor powders or solutions, which markedly deteriorates the performance and reproducibility of PSCs. Adding benzylhydrazine hydrochloride (BHC) as a reductant into degraded precursor solutions can effectively reduce the detrimental I2 back to I−, accompanied by a substantial reduction of I3−-induced charge traps in the films. BHC residuals in perovskite films further stabilize the PSCs under operation conditions. BHC improves the stabilized efficiency of the blade-coated p-i-n structure PSCs to a record value of 23.2% (22.62 ± 0.40% certified by National Renewable Energy Laboratory), and the high-efficiency devices have a very high yield. A stabilized aperture efficiency of 18.2% is also achieved on a 35.8-cm2 mini-module.
