AbstractHerein, the work addresses the synthesis of biomaterials (chitosan and garlic) loaded CdO–TiO2 hybrid nanocomposites for photocatalytic water treatment and photodynamic cancer therapeutic applications that were reported the first time. CdO–TiO2 (CT) nanocomposites were synthesized and loaded with the biomaterials such as chitosan and garlic by simple sol–gel method. The nanomaterials were characterized and the photodegradation of three model pollutants, Methylene blue (MB), Methyl orange (MO) and Rhodamine B (Rh-B) was opted to investigate the efficiency of the synthesized photocatalyst under the solar light. From the results, the garlic-loaded CdO–TiO2 (AS-CT) hybrid nanocomposites exhibit a superior photocatalytic activity than the chitosan-loaded CdO–TiO2 (CS-CT) and CdO–TiO2 (CT) nanocomposites under the irradiation of solar light. Additionally, the cell viability of the synthesized nanocomposites was carried out in HeLa cell lines under different concentrations, light doses and incubation periods using an LED light source. Compared to the CS-CT and CT nanocomposites, an efficient photodynamic activity was achieved in the case of AS-CT hybrid nanocomposites. Actually, the end-use properties required for both processes in AS-CT nanocomposites appear similar due to the presence of organo sulphurus compounds.

Nickel oxide (NiO) thin films were successfully deposited by sol-gel dip-coating method on glass substrates. The structural, morphological and optical properties in addition to the photocatalytic activity of the prepared films were investigated. The results show that the films have a polycrystalline NiO cubic structure with dense NiO grains and average optical transmittance in the visible region. The photocatalytic properties of the films were studied through the degradation of methylene blue and 89% of degradation was achieved for 4.5h of solar light irradiation exposure which indicates the capability of NiO photocatalytic activity.

In this research, photocatalytic materials of TiO2, Ag-TiO2, Ag-TiO2/perlite were synthesized by the sol-gel method. By combining the photocatalytic activity between Ag-TiO2 and Perlite mineral, the Ag-TiO2/perlite composite has overcome the disadvantages of pristine TiO2, such as high band gap energy, low light utilization and easy recombination of electrons and holes. The synthesized samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherm, UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-vis DRS). The photocatalytic activity of the samples was tested for degradation of methylene blue (MB) under solar light irradiation. Photodegradation studies revealed a 95% removal of MB dye via the synthesized Ag-TiO2/perlite after 150 min of irradiation. Reusability of this hybrid photocatalyst system was tested and only a 3% decrease was observed after four cycles.

ZnO/TiO2 nanocomposites with several ratio of the components were prepared by sol-gel method using titanium isopropoxide and titanium butoxide as titania precursors. Phase formation and photocatalytic activity of ZnO/TiO2 nanocomposites depend on ratio of the components and calcination temperature. The photocatalytic activity in dependence on calcination temperasture, phase composition was determined by degradation of methylene blue solution under Hg lamp and solar light imitating illumination. The highest photocatalytic activity showed ZnO/TiO2 nanocomposites containing 99 mol.% ZnO and 50 mol% ZnO when hexagonal ZnTiO3 phase was formed. ZnO/TiO2 nanocomposites exhibited enhanced photoactivity under solar light with respect to Hg lamp irradiation.

The undoped and Mo-doped TiO2nanoparticles were synthesized by sol-gel method. The as-prepared samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), diffuse reflectance UV-visible absorption spectra (UV-vis DRS), X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The photocatalytic activity was evaluated by photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue under irradiation of a 500 W xenon lamp and natural solar light outdoor. Effects of calcination temperatures and Mo doping amounts on crystal phase, crystallite size, lattice distortion, and optical properties were investigated. The results showed that most of Mo6+took the place of Ti4+in the crystal lattice of TiO2, which inhibited the growth of crystallite size, suppressed the transformation from anatase to rutile, and led to lattice distortion of TiO2. Mo doping narrowed the band gap (from 3.05 eV of TiO2to 2.73 eV of TiMo0.02O) and efficiently increased the optical absorption in visible region. Mo doping was shown to be an efficient method for degradation of methylene blue under visible light, especially under solar light. When the calcination temperature was 550°C and the Mo doping amount was 2.0%, the Mo-doped TiO2sample exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity.

In this study ZnO photocatalysts with different loading of Eu2O3 and Sm2O3 were prepared vie microwave-assisted hydrothermal method. The prepared samples were investigated by using XRD, SEM and BET analysis. The photocatalytic activity was determined by degradation of methylene blue (MB) under Osram Vitalux illumination. Prepared ZnO photocatalysts shown high photocatalytic activity under solar light simulated radiation. After 30 minute of irradiation more than 95 % of initial MB solution was degraded. The effect of pH and photocatalyst dosage was investigated. The reusability of photocatalysts was also studied.

This work described a new sustainable method for the fabrication of ceramic membranes with high photocatalytic activity, through a simple sol-gel route. The photocatalytic surfaces, prepared at low temperature and under solvent-free conditions, exhibited a narrow pore size distribution and homogeneity without cracks. These surfaces have shown a highly efficient and reproducible behavior for the degradation of methylene blue. Given their characterization results, the microfiltration photocatalytic membranes produced in this study using solvent-free conditions are expected to effectively retain microorganisms, such as bacteria and fungi that could then be inactivated by photocatalysis.

Iron-doped TiO2 photocatalyst powders were prepared by the sol–gel method and characterized by Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET)-specific surface area, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Ultraviolet–Visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy. Fe3+ doping in the TiO2 decreases the crystal grain size, increases the specific surface areas of powders, extends the absorption to visible light regions (400~500 nm), and lowers the photocatalytic activity for methylene blue (MB) degradation under UV irradiation. The photocatalytic degradation of MB in water was investigated as a function of the Fe3+ content in TiO2. It was found that under the irradiation of visible light, a small amount of Fe3+ dopant in TiO22 powders could obviously enhance the photocatalytic activity. When the Fe3+ content was in the range of 0.03–0.1 mol%, the photocatalytic activity of the samples was higher than that of undoped TiO2. Appropriate content of Fe-doping is an effective means to improve the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 for MB degradation under visible light irradiation.
