The determination of auditory thresholds by means of behavioral techniques in young infants can be difficult. This could be the result of limitations in methodology, a lack of observable auditory responsiveness, or both. In the current study, 2- and 4-month old infants were tested under enhanced conditions for obtaining behavioral responses (i.e., salient auditory stimuli, reduced visual distractions, reinforced correct responses). A two-interval, forced-choice task with four intensity levels was used. Although a behavioral threshold was obtained for the 4-month-olds, threshold determination for the 2-month-olds remained elusive. In light of the current findings and previous studies of visual acuity of infants, these results suggest a lack of behavioral responsiveness to auditory stimuli for the younger infants rather than methodological limitations. With infants in the 2-month-old age range, clinical audiologists should expect few behavioral responses to auditory stimuli at intensity levels below those that elicit startle responses.

This article theoretically proves constructive phenomenon of self identity as signs of self-disclosure own potential and prospects of development of individual construction. In addition, it empirically showes signs of psychological determination of the dominant instinct in a constructive self-determination of women with different social statuses. It was noted that the issue of self-preservation is associated with the peculiarities of manifestation of self-preservation instinct of man, but it needs higher-order cause social nature of the behavior that is localized at the highest point of self-realization. It theorized that self-realization determines the trend of rational organization of human life and manifests itself in its sense of life satisfaction. It was found that the psychological basis of constructive self-preservation of the individual make individually-typological characteristics of a person that reflect physiological and psychosocial reserves of self-realization. The developed program of empirical research, as well as the methods used complex mathematical processing of results of research allows to specify the content of the psychological determination of the dominant instinct of constructive self-realization а women age range of 35-45 years and with different social status. Women who bring up the problem child dominates the instinct of self-preservation, which is reflected in their excessive self-centeredness, and is accompanied by low levels of self-actualization, as opposed to the study of women who are raising healthy children and that against the backdrop of a pronounced tendency to self-actualization, dominated by basic instinct "research type" and "independent type."

Background Absent submucosal ganglion cells in biopsies 1-3 cm above the pectinate line establishes the pathologic diagnosis of Hirschsprung Disease (HD). Calretinin stains both ganglion cells and their mucosal neurites and has gained importance in HD diagnosis. Absent calretinin positive mucosal neurites in biopsies at the appropriate level above the pectinate line is highly specific for HD. Whether this applies to lower biopsies is uncertain. To address this, we studied anorectal canal autopsy specimens from infants. Methods We performed an autopsy study of infant anorectal canal specimens to describe calretinin staining in this region. Calretinin staining was correlated with histologic and gross landmarks. Results In all 15 non-HD specimens, calretinin positive mucosal neurites were present in glandular mucosa up to the anorectal line where neurites rapidly diminished. Age range was preterm 26 weeks to 3 months. Conclusions Calretinin positive mucosal neurites are present in glandular mucosa up to the anorectal line in young infants. This is potentially important regarding neonatal HD biopsy level and diagnosis. Positive calretinin staining at the anorectal line favors normal innervation making HD unlikely. Absent calretinin positive neurites in glandular mucosa is worrisome for HD in young infants, regardless of location.

Slow-wave activity in the electroencephalogram is thought to reflect the depth or intensity of sleep. This hypothesis is primarily derived from studies of rats or humans. However, some characteristics of sleep of rabbits differ from those of rats or humans. To determine whether slow-wave activity (power density in the delta frequency band of 0.5-5.0 Hz) correlates with arousability in rabbits, we presented auditory stimuli (72-90 dB) to control or sleep-deprived animals during slow-wave sleep. The resulting behavioral responses, defined by changes in eye state and body posture, and the latency to return to sleep were used as measures of arousability. Behavioral responsiveness to auditory stimuli increased with increasing stimulus intensity in both control and sleep-deprived animals. Overall, however, sleep-deprived animals exhibited fewer postural changes and eye openings than did control rabbits. Sleep-deprived rabbits also more rapidly returned to sleep after the stimulus presentation than did control animals. Latency to return to sleep was correlated with delta power before stimulus presentation, but behavioral responsiveness was not. These data suggest that, in this rabbit model, delta power may not be predictive of behavioral arousability but may reflect sleep propensity.

The main aim of present study was to examine the relationships between well-being, Religiosity, A study was made on convenient sample of 50 young adolescents (females) age range of 18 to 22 years and used 4 tools (i) Well-being scale (Edinburgh, 2006) (ii) Religiosity scale (Bhusan,1970) (iii) Consciousness scale (Brazdau,2009) (iv)Locus of control scale (Rotter,1966). Co relational design was used. Results indicate that Well-being and Religious scores are positively correlated (r=0.31, p<0.05). There is also high positive co relational between well-being and consciousness scores (r=0.42, p<0.01). Thus increases in consciousness and religious scores led to increase in well=being scores among young adolescents. Multiple regression analysis was also used (R=0.46) and it showed that Consciousness has highest contribution in determination of criterion variable i.e. well-being, the regression coefficient being 0.15. Religiosity has less contribution and locus of control has negligible contribution, the regression coefficient being 0.05 and 0.003 respectively.

Objectives - Analyze the prevalence of biochemical recurrence (BCR) in patients submitted to radical prostatectomy with lymphadenectomy (RP-LD) the most prevalent clinical and pathological staging in the BCR and to correlate the sum of the Gleason score (GS) in the surgical specimen in patients who presented BCR. Method - Analysis of 100 patients diagnosed with prostate adenocarcinoma who performed RP-LD between 2013 to 2017. All subjects underwent transrectal prostate biopsy due to PSA or rectal examination and RP-LD. The lymphadenectomy considered in the study was the iliac-obturator, and the surgical pieces were analyzed to determine the pathological staging and its descriptors. All patients who had two or more PSA measurements >0.2 ng/ml and who had undergone RP-LD were considered postoperative. Results -About 22% of the patients submitted to RP-LD presented BCR. Patients with BCR had a 59-76 age range, mean age of 66.27 years, and median age of 63.50 years. The most prevalent preoperative PSA in patients with BCR was between 10-20 ng/ml (40.90%) and the most prevalent clinical stage was cT2 (59.10%). Regarding the Gleason score, the BCR patients had the most prevalent 6 (36.37%) score in the biopsy and score 7 (4 + 3) (36.37%) in the surgical specimen. All patients (100%) with BCR presented perineural invasion, with pT3 staging (81.81%) and pN0 (77.28%) being the most prevalent in patients with BCR. Patients with BCR presented a correlation (p<0.05) between the increase in the sum of pathological GS and the increase in pTN staging. Conclusion - All these variables were important in the determination of BCR in patients submitted to RP-LD, thus demonstrating the importance of this information in the analysis of the prognosis and in the follow-up of these patients.

Objective. It was examined whether PTH and 25-dihydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels, together or separately, are indicators of the risk of stroke. Materials and Methods. This prospective study was performed at two centers. In the study, 100 patients diagnosed with acute ischemic stroke and 100 control individuals in the same age range were examined. In addition to neurological examination, cranial imaging, extensive routine blood chemistry, PTH, and 25(OH)D levels were evaluated in all cases. Stroke risk factors were determined. Logistic regression was used for statistical analysis. Results. A total of 60 patients and 79 control individuals were included in the study. Different estimation models were designed in order to examine the relationship between PTH and 25(OH)D levels with stroke. According to modeling results, it was determined that the most effective predictor for risk of stroke was 25(OH)D levels, followed by hypertension and PTH levels, respectively. Conclusion. PTH and 25(OH)D levels together can make important contributions to determination of stroke risk, and further investigations are needed to understand this relationship more fully.

It is known that no single method for the determination of fibrinogen/fibrin degradation products (FDP) indicates their nature which is important to establish the state of activation of the fibrinolytic system. Therefore we applied two simple and reproducible laboratory methods to study eleven preoperative patients with pelvic masses: 1) the latex fibrin polymerization inhibition test (Finkelstein test)and 2) the staphylococcal cumpling test. The normal values obtained were 0-3 polymerization inhibition units (PIU) and 2.5-4 μg fibrinogen equivalents per milliliter, respectively. Seven clinically healthy females of the same age range served as controls.Out of seven cases with confirmed postoperative diagnosis of ovarian carcinoma, five (71%) had positive FDP by both methods with average values of 12.2 ± 5.9 PIU and 10.4 ± 4.6 μg/ml. The ratio between PlU/ml and μg/ml was determined and the range found was 0.53-1.75 which is indicative of the presence of FDP of the “late” type. The values are in agreement with previous reports of the incidence of late FDP in other malignancies. All the negative FDP, except two, corresponded to benign ovarian cyst, although there was a case of haemorrhagic cyst with positive FDP.The presence of “late” FDP indicates an activated fibrinolytic process and could constitute a cautionary sign for the postoperative care of the patient. We consider that the application of two methods for FDP permits to detect an increased amount and also the type of the circulating FDP. The data presented here clearly warrant detailed investigation of the potential benefits of knowing the nature of FDP in monitoring the postoperative follow up of patients with pelvic masses.

We examined breath-by-breath (B-B) variations of FRC (delta FRC) and their effect on measured O2 and CO2 gas exchange in 52 2- to 4-min segments of continuous air breathing obtained in 29 patients (age range 6--50 yr). Respiratory frequency ranged from 13 to 43 breaths/min, VE from 6.7 to 22.5 l/min (BTPS), and expired VT from 234 to 1,370 ml (BTPS). Computer analysis was based on the following source data measured at the mouth: inspired (VI) and expired (VE) gas flow, FN2, FO2 and FCO2. The analysis provides B-B evaluation of VI, VE, delta FRC in terms of VN2, and VO2 and VCO2 at the mouth and at the alveolar level, i.e., after correction for delta FRC. Significant B-B variations of FRC were found in all studies. delta FRC ranged from +360 to -360 ml (BTPS). For single respiratory cycles VI - VE is primarily a function of N2 exchange at the mouth (VMN2). VO2 and VCO2, uncorrected for delta FRC, are significantly more dispersed about mean values than the corrected gas uptakes (P less than 0.0005). The data support the view that the assumption of VIN2 = VEN2 is invalid for single respiratory cycles. Determination of breath-by-breath VO2 and VCO2 should therefore, not be based on steady-state gas uptake equations. It requires measurement of both inspired and expired breath volumes and evaluation of N2 gas exchange.
