The curtailment of infectious diseases is facilitated through observance of good hand hygiene, a habit which tends to be low less observed in developing countries. This paper investigated the level of availability and adequacy of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) materials in secondary schools in Lagos State, Nigeria. The sample size is made up of 620 respondents, selected through a combination of purposive, stratified, and simple random sampling methods. Research instruments adopted included questionnaires, focus group discussion guide, document observation, and unobtrusive observation. Quantitative data were analyzed through the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The study showed that the majority of the respondents (87.4%) admitted that the most typical type of toilet facility is a water closet, followed by pit latrine (13.7%) and open space (1.6%) for defecation. A majority of the respondents considered the provision of a wash hand basin as grossly inadequate. Therefore, researchers recommended improvement of structures, facilities, and materials relating to WASH in schools across Lagos State, Nigeria.

<p>The study investigated influence of some factors on the performance of selected West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) candidates. It also examined the relationship between these factors and candidates’ performance. Factors investigated include socio-economic background of the candidates (SEB), study hours (SH), attitude towards English Language (ATTENG) and attitude towards Mathematics (ATTMAT). Secondary schools in Lagos State were divided into private and public secondary schools. Simple random sampling was used to select five out of the six educational districts in Lagos State. Then one public and one private secondary schools were selected in each of the five educational districts earlier selected in stage one. Thereafter, 30 senior secondary school III students were selected in each of the ten schools (5 public and 5 private schools). A total of 600 candidates (consisting of male and female participants) were expected, however, only 564 participants with complete data were found suitable for the study. An instrument tagged “Candidates Rating Scale (CRS)” was developed and used to measure their SEB, SH, ATTENG and ATTMA which were the independent variables while candidates’ scores at WASSCE was used as the dependent variable. Obtained data were analyzed by using multiple regressions. The results of the study indicate that there exists a positive correlation between WASSCE grades and all the variables in Mathematics but correlate with socio economic background only for English language.</p>

The main aim of this study was to investigate the use of ICT in teaching Kiswahili plays in secondary schools as a way of cultivating interest and positive attitude towards drama at an early age. The objectives of the study were: To ascertain whether teachers of Kiswahili play have ICT skills for teaching Kiswahili plays and to examine attitude of teachers of Kiswahili towards integration of ICT in teaching Kiswahili plays The study used social learning theory by Bandura and the functionalism theory by John Dewey. The study employed a descriptive survey design to answer the research questions. Stratified sampling was used to categorize schools in to boys, girls, mixed schools, day and boarding schools. Simple random sampling was applied to select 275 students from a total of 918 students. The study used focus group discussion, questionnaires for teachers and students to collect data and interviews to provide further information on the teacher’s attitude on the use of ICT in teaching Kiswahili play and observation. The study showed limited use of ICT in teaching and learning of Kiswahili play and it adds up into the pool of existing knowledge and is beneficial to teachers since it gives suggestion on the best combination to motivate and arouse interest of teaching and also to the teacher training institutions in preparing teachers to adequately use ICT in instruction in classroom level and also to the curriculum developers.

This study examined principals’ administrative effectiveness in the implementation of quality assurance standards in public secondary schools in Edo and Delta States. To guide the study, three hypotheses were raised. The study adopted the descriptive research design. The population of the study comprised all the principals and teachers in the public secondary schools in Edo and Delta States, Nigeria. Simple random sampling technique was used to select 240 principals and 720 teachers from the schools. Data was collected using ‘Administrative Effectiveness and Implementation of Quality Assurance Standards Questionnaire (AEIQASQ)’ to find out principals’ level of administrative effectiveness in the implementation of quality assurance standards using the Normative mean of 62.5 which was established from the instrument as the benchmark for effectiveness. The findings revealed that principals’ administrative effectiveness was high in the public secondary schools in Edo and Delta States. There was also a significant relationship between administrative effectiveness and implementation of quality assurance standards in the States based on principals’ gender and experience. It was therefore recommended that since principals in public schools are effective, Government should provide them with adequate funds and all necessary support to ensure that quality assurance standards are fully implemented in the schools. Also, experience and gender should be considered in appointing principals among other criteria as experienced female principals were found to be more effective.

Leadership is a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal (Northhouse, 2011). In time and space, women leadership remains a subject talked about but hardly appreciated (Wren, 2013). Among the factors contributing to poor representation of women in leadership is stakeholder’s attitude (Coleman, 2005). The study sought to investigate stakeholder’s attitudes impeding women teachers' ascension to leadership positions in mixed public secondary schools, focusing in Tharaka South Sub – County, Kenya. The study employed descriptive cross-sectional survey design utilizing both qualitative and quantitative methods of data collection. Probability and non-probability sampling techniques were used to arrive at the sample size. Data was collected from women classroom teachers, heads of departments, school principals, education officers, education trade unionists, Parents and Teachers Association officials and School Board of Management officials. Questionnaires, interview guide and focus group discussion guides were used to collect both qualitative and quantitative data. Data analysis was assisted by computer software (Statistical Package for Social Sciences for quantitative data and NVIVO for qualitative data). The study established that education stakeholders have a general negative attitude towards women leadership in schools.

Students’ poor Financial Accounting performance in senior secondary schools is worrisome and induces youths to engage in several social vices. An attempt to curb the menace and improve students’ performance led this study to assess the instructional resources and effective pedagogy of Financial Accounting in secondary schools in Lagos State, Nigeria. Adopting the descriptive survey research design, the population of the study comprised 2,492 senior secondary schools 1 and 2 students and 10 teachers of Financial Accounting under Education District IV in Lagos State, Nigeria. 300 students and all the 10 teachers eventually emerged as samples using Checkmarket Sample Size Calculator at 5% margin and 95% confidence level. The data were collected using a structured questionnaire that obtained Cronbach’s Alpha=0.90, and analysed using descriptive analysis and t-test at α=0.05 level of significance. The results showed that the teachers of Financial Accounting were not using activity-based pedagogical strategies. Most of the instructional materials necessary for the effective pedagogy of Financial Accounting were inadequate and malfunctioning. Therefore, Financial Accounting teachers are strongly encouraged to apply innovative and experiential learning strategies in teaching and learning. Furthermore, adequate infrastructure and modern equipment in the schools will create better learning opportunities for students.

Kajian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji faktor–faktor berkaitan Pengurusan Kualiti Menyeluruh (PKM) di sekolah–sekolah menengah zon Bukit Mertajam. Faktor–faktor yang dikaji ialah budaya organisasi dan komitmen guru. Kajian yang berbentuk tinjauan korelasi ini merangkumi sejumlah 300 orang guru dari 19 buah sekolah menengah zon Bukit Mertajam yang telah dipilih dengan menggunakan kaedah persampelan rawak mudah. Satu set instrumen kajian yang terdiri daripada tiga bahagian iaitu PKM, budaya organisasi, dan komitmen guru dengan nilai alfa Cronbach masing–masing 0.881, 0.921, dan 0.852 telah digunakan dalam kajian ini. Secara deskriptifnya, dapatan kajian ini menunjukkan: (i) Kebanyakan responden iaitu 65.6 peratus mempunyai persepsi bahawa amalan PKM di sekolah mereka adalah pada tahap yang sederhana manakala persepsi 30.4 peratus responden berada pada tahap tinggi; (ii) Sebanyak 67.3 peratus responden mempunyai persepsi bahawa budaya organisasi mereka berada pada tahap yang sederhana positif; (iii) Kesemua responden berkomitmen sederhana dan tinggi. Di samping itu, penganalisisan data menunjukkan terdapat hubungan yang positif dan signifikan antara budaya organisasi (r = 0.725) dan komitmen guru (r = 0.901) dengan tahap PKM pada aras signifikan 0.01. Hasil kajian daripada analisis regresi pelbagai kaedah ‘Forward’ pula menunjukkan budaya organisasi dan komitmen guru merupakan peramal yang telah berjaya menyumbang sebanyak 81.7 peratus dalam pelaksanaan PKM ini. Kata kunci: Pengurusan kualiti menyeluruh, budaya organisasi, komitmen guru The aim of this research was to study factors associated with Total Quality Management (TQM) in secondary schools Bukit Mertajam zone. Factors that were studied are organizational culture and teachers’ commitment. This descriptive correlational survey research involved a total of 300 teachers from 19 secondary schools in Bukit Mertajam zone that were selected using the simple random sampling method. A set of research instrument comprising of the three section, namely TQM, organizational culture and teachers’ commitment with Cronbach Alpha value 0.881, 0.921 and 0.852 respectively has been used in this research. In descriptive terms, the research findings showed that: (i) Most of the respondents, 65.6 percent perceived the practice of TQM in their schools was at the moderate level while 30.4 percent respondents perceived the practice of TQM was at the high level; (ii) A total of 67.3 percent respondents perceived their organizational culture as moderate positive level; (iii) All respondents were at the moderate and high commitment. In addition, the data analysis showed that there were positive and significant relationships between the organizational culture (r = 0.725) and teachers’ commitment (r = 0.901) with the level of TQM at significent level = 0.01. Findings of the “Forward” method of multiple regression showed that organizational culture and teachers’ commitment were the predictors in which have successfully contributed 81.7 percent to the practice of TQM. Background: Provision of adequate water supply, sanitation facilities, hygiene and waste management in schools reduces the disease burden among children, staff and their families. Every child has equal right to grow in a safe and sound environment. However, levels of water supply, sanitation and hygiene are unacceptable in many schools worldwide.Method: Study included forty schools comprising twenty public and twenty private schools of Sunsari district selected by simple random sampling method. The status of school environment and sanitation were assessed by using observation and interview method using observation checklist, questionnaires and photographs.Result: Two public schools were completely devoid of sanitary facilities though toilet facility was present physically. Students couldn’t use toilet due to lack of water in one school due to theft of tube well and septic tank of the toilet was full in another school. Other remaining schools didn’t have satisfactory, clean and proper sanitary facilities. Only few schools had convenient hand washing point.Conclusion: Sanitation facilities were in neglected state evidenced by unavailability of sanitation facilities even though that was physically present and the sanitation facilities were in pitiable condition including cleanliness, water supply. All the stakeholders including school management, supervisors, parents, teachers, students should be ready to play vital role on their own. Lack of one toilet affects no. of students and people of surrounding area and raises of risk of soil transmitted diseases so this situation demands attention of authorities and other stakeholders.Health Renaissance 2015;13(2): 114-124

This study sought to explore the influence of professional growth opportunities on the job performance of deputy principals of public secondary schools in Lugari Sub-County, Kenya. Adopting the descriptive research design, the study utilised mixed methods approach engaging both questionnaires and interview guide. The focus population for the study included 28 principals, 28 deputy principals and 420 teachers of public secondary schools within Lugari Sub- County. All the 28 principals and 28 deputy principals were purposively sampled for study whereas, 200 teachers were identified for study by simple random sampling technique. A pilot test-retest study was conducted in three public secondary schools from nearby Uasin Gishu County and a reliable Cronbach’s Alpha coefficient of 0.79 and 0.81 was obtained for the deputy principal response questionnaire and teacher response questionnaire, respectively. Supervisors and researchers from Mount Kenya University School of education were engaged to ascertain the validity of the research instruments and necessary adjustments effected on the tools before use. The questionnaires gathered quantitative data from teachers and deputy principals whilst the interview guide assembled qualitative data from the principals. The statistical Package for Social Sciences version 23.0 was used for the analysis of quantitative data yielding frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviation. Qualitative data were analysed thematically based on the objectives and presented along with the quantitative data. The findings established that schools in Lugari Sub County hardly support deputy principals for in-service training, the majority of deputy principals perceived unfairness in promotion procedures and that the position of deputy principal did not adequately prepare deputy principals for principal-ship. The study recommends that deputy principals need to be supported by the school management to collaborate and improve their requisite skills to discharge their duties effectively.
