Swamp eel (Monopterus albus) processing produced byproducts such as heads that possess a high protein, carbohydrate, lipid, and energies content. Swamp eel heads were hydrolyzed (SEHPH) and tested for their antibacterial activity against histamine-producing bacteria (HPB) to explore the potency. The hydrolysis was conducted by a commercial papain enzyme PAYA (concentration 4%) with various hydrolysis times (0, 60, 120, and 180 minutes) at 60o C with pH 5. The results indicated that increasing hydrolysis time increased solubility and the degree of hydrolysis. The inhibitor concentration 50 test using microdilution of SEHPH inhibited 50% against three HPB named Citrobacter sp. (CK1), Klebsiella sp. (CK13), and Morganella morganii (TK7) at 20 mg/ml. The optimum antibacterial activity test by disk diffusion method was formed by each minute of hydrolysis with the best inhibition zone to Klebsiella sp. (CK13). The macrodillution method showed the highest inhibition was produced by 180 hydrolyses with 45% on CK1, 54% on CK13, and 48% on TK7. These results indicated that SEHPH has potency as an antibacterial agent to reduce histamine-producing bacteria.

Introduction: Corn silk or known as herb name stigma maydis is an important medicinal botanical in many traditional medicines worldwide, including jamu, an Indonesia traditional medicine. The exploration of corn silk to treat acne vulgaris is still lacking, therefore the current research was conducted to analyze the activity of ethanolic extract from corn silk (EECS) against 3 acne-related bacteria, Propionibacterium acnes, Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus aureus. Materials and Methods: The antibacterial activity of EECS at concentration range of 10 to 100% v/v was evaluated using the disk diffusion method. As comparation, distilled water was used as a solvent control, while 1% clindamycin was used as a positive control. Results: Shinoda’s test showed that flavonoid was detected in the EECS. The higher concentration of EECS exhibited higher diameter of inhibition zone indicating higher antibacterial activity on P. acnes, while the antibacterial activity of S. epidermidis was not increased at similar concentrations of EECS. The antibacterial activity of EECS against S. aureus decreased at the higher EECS concentration (>70%). Conclusion: Taken together, EECS is a potential as a bioactive source to inhibit the growth of acne-related bacteria P. acne, S. epidermidis and S. aureus. Further investigation is needed to explore the corn silk or stigma maydis as a medicinal botanical in jamu targeted to treat acne vulgaris. AbstractThe first aim of the study was to compare the antibacterial activity of several types of honey of different origins, against some bacterial resistant strains. The strains had been isolated from patients. The second aim was to discover the correlations between the antibacterial character of honey and the physico-chemical properties of the honey. Ten honey samples (polyfloral, linden, acacia, manna, and sunflower) from the centre of Romania were tested to determine their antibacterial properties against the following bacterial species: Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium, Bacillus cereus, Bacillus subtilis, and Listeria monocytogenes. Bacterial cultures in nutrient broth and the culture medium Mueller-Hinton agar were used. The susceptibility to antibiotics was performed using the disk diffusion method. All honey samples showed antibacterial activity on the isolated bacterial strains, in particular polyfloral (inhibition zone 13-21 mm in diameter) - because it is the source of several plants, and manna (inhibition zone 13-19.5 mm in diameter), and sunflower (inhibition zone 14-18.5 mm in diameter). Pure honey has a significant antibacterial activity against some bacteria which are resistant to antibiotics. Bacterial strains differed in their sensitivity to honeys. Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus were the most sensitive. The present study revealed that honey antibacterial activity depends on the origin of the honey. We also found that there was a significant correlation between antibacterial activity of honeys and the colour of the honey but not between acidity and pH. The statistical analysis showed that the honey type influences the antibacterial activity (diameter of the bacterial strains inhibition zones).
