Screening ‘new’ medicinal plants of traditional importance for bioactive components is a sure way of discovering novel therapeutic agents to treat diseases. This study, therefore investigated the presence of phytochemical, antioxidant and antibacterial components of the extracts of Lannea egregia. Phytochemical screening was done by standard methods. Antibacterial activity of the extracts of Lannea egregia was determined by agar well diffusion method while the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined by agar dilution method. The antioxidant capacity of the crude extracts was determined through the evaluation of total flavonoid content, total phenolic content, ferric reducing power, total antioxidant capacity and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryhydrazyl. The phytochemical screening of the different parts of this plant revealed the presence of tannins, saponins, alkaloids, flavonoids, steroids, terpenoids, emodins, phlobatannins, anthocyanins, coumarins and phenolics. Phlobatannins was observed to be absent in the stem bark. The crude extracts obtained from the leaves, stem bark and roots of this plant exhibited good antibacterial activity against typed strains of Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli. The diameter of the zone of inhibition ranged from 9.0 to 26.0 mm at 100 mg/mL for all the plant parts. The ethyl acetate leaf extract of this plant possessed the highest antibacterial activity with MIC and MBC values of the range of (3.125 to ˃50 mg/mL) and (12.5 to ˃50 mg/mL) respectively. The zone inhibition of the chromatographic fractions of both plants ranged 15-23 mm. Antioxidant study of the extracts of the leaf of L. egregia revealed that the ethyl acetate and methanol extracts have good antioxidant potentials comparable to that of ascorbic acid control. This study has revealed that the extracts from different parts of L. egregia possess good antibacterial and antioxidant activities which could be a function of the various phytochemicals detected in the plant. The emergence of multidrug resistant bacterial pathogens and the increase of antimicrobial resistance constitutes a major health challenge, leading to intense research efforts being focused on the discovery of novel antimicrobial compounds. In this study, endophytes were isolated from different parts of Sandwithia guyanensis plant (leaves, wood and latex) belonging to the Euphorbiaceae family and known to produce antimicrobial compounds, and chemically characterised using Molecular Network in order to discover novel antimicrobial molecules. One fungal endophyte extract obtained from S. guyanensis latex showed significant antimicrobial activity with Minimal Inhibitory Concentration on methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus at 16 µg/mL. The chemical investigation of this fungus (Lecanicillium genus) extract led to the isolation of 5 stephensiolides compounds, four of which demonstrated antibacterial activity. Stephensiolide I and G showed the highest antibacterial activity on MRSA with a MIC at 4 and 16 µg/mL respectively.

The current study was designated to explore the antioxidant and antibacterial properties of the methanolic extract of Magnolia champaca stem bark and its different fractions. Antioxidant activity was assessed using total antioxidant capacity, ferric reducing power, DPPH, hydroxyl and hydrogen peroxide scavenging assay. Antibacterial activity was evaluated against five gram positive and five gram negative bacteria using disc diffusion assay method. Among the different fractions, chloroform fraction (CHF) and ethyl acetate fraction (EAF) showed the highest antioxidant activity whereas aqueous fraction (AQF) showed lowest activity in DPPH radical scavenging assay with IC50 of 12.12, 22.41 and 55.16 μg/ml, respectively. Both of the extracts CHF and EAF also exhibited highest total antioxidant capacity, ferric reducing power and hydrogen peroxide scavenging activity with concentration dependent manner when compared to standard BHT. Moderate to potent antibacterial activity was observed against all tested organisms compared to standard azithromycin. The results from the present study revealed that the different fractions of stem bark of M. champaca specially CHF and EAF possess antioxidant and antibacterial property which support its use in traditional medicine and suggesting that the plant may be further investigated to discover its pharmacologically active natural products. Objective: The aim of the present study was to isolate the endophytic fungi from medicinal plant Rauvolfia serpentina (L.) Benth. ex Kurz. (Family Apocynaceae) and observed their antibacterial activity against bacteria as well as the molecular characterization of most potent fungal strain. Methods: Collection and isolation of endophytic fungi from different parts (root, shoot, leaves) of Rauvolfia serpentina plant. Screening of endophytic fungi for antibacterial activity was scrutinised against six bacteria viz. Bacillus subtilis, Enterococcus sp., Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium and Streptococcus pyogenes by using Agar well diffusion method. For molecular sequencing of potent fungi, the DNA was extracted, quantified and amplified by using two oligonucleotide primers ITS4 and ITS6 in PCR.Results: A total seven endophytic fungi Aspergillus niger, Penicillium citrinum, Cladosporium sp., Curvularia lunata, Aspergillus sp., Alternaria sp. and Aspergillus fumigatus were isolated from different parts of Rauvolfia serpentina and fungal strain Penicillium citrinum was shown the maximum zone of inhibition against Bacillus subtilis (23.0±0.12 mm), Escherichia coli (19.9±0.16 mm), Streptococcus pyrogens (19.2±0.59 mm), Enterococcus sp., (17.2±0.08 mm), Klebsiella pneumoniae (18.9±0.16 mm) and Salmonella typhimurium (15.1±0.16 mm). The molecular sequencing of the potent fungi was done by primers (ITS4 and ITS6) which showed strong specificity with fungal DNA and the percentages of identical matches of ITS4 and ITS6 DNA sequences in the GeneBank database (NCBI) were determined to 98 %.Conclusion: In the present study, the endophytic fungal strain Penicillium citrinumshowed the potential source of antibacterial bioactive compounds and molecular sequencing of this fungus helps in future to determine the various metabolic pathways that are responsible for the production of such type of novel compounds.

Seven florally diversified Bangladeshi honey samples were assessed for their physicochemical properties as well as their antibiogram profile on different human pathogenic bacterial strains. The average density, total protein content, ascorbic acid content, total phenolics content and the total antioxidant capacity of these honeys were determined as 1.50±0.09 g/ml, 5.63±1.56 mg/g, 91.87±22.16 mg/g, 571.04±289.02 mg gallic acid equivalent/gram, and 320.74±55.06 mg ascorbic acid equivalent/gram of samples, respectively. A significant correlation between the phenolics content and the total antioxidant capacity was observed in commercially available honey samples. However, the natural honey samples showed the best antibacterial activity against different pathogenic multidrug-resistant bacterial strains. Significant antibacterial activities were observed against Klebsiella pneumoniae, Salmonella typhi, Micrococcus luteus, Pseudomonas spp. and Enterobacter spp. and moderate antibacterial activities was observed on Shigella boydii, Bacillus cereus, Bacillus megaterium, and Bacillus subtilis. The antibacterial activity was correlated with the total antioxidant capacity. This study suggested that the Bangladeshi multifloral honeys have clinical potential against multidrug-resistant pathogenic bacterial strains.
