The use of castellated beams has become more popular in the last two decades. The main idea for the use of these types of steel beams is to reduce their self-weight by providing openings in the web of wide flange (WF) or I sections. Numerous research on castellated beams has been conducted, the majority of the studies aimed to optimize the opening size and the shape configuration of the openings. A numerical analysis of castellated beams with oval openings was performed in this study. The sections under investigation had variations in the height-to-length ratios of the beam. The Do to D and b to Do ratios were kept at a constant. The D value was defined as the height of the beam, while Do is the height of the opening, and b is the width of the opening. The numerical analysis was performed by the finite element analysis using the STRAND7 software. The numerical model was further validated to the experimental data. The results showed that the developed finite element model resulted in a very good representation to the actual behavior of the sections.

As a next-generation metropolitan transportation means, nowadays non-step bus is in the spotlight world widely. However, in the design of non-step bus, the most important consideration should be focused on the securing of the survival space for passengers in unexpected traffic accident. In this context, this paper presents the finite element analysis of the rollover and head-on crash response of a composite non-step bus. A 3-D full-scale finite element model of the non-step bus, together with the simulation conditions which are consistent with the safety test rules established in Europe, is employed for the realistic and reliable numerical analysis.

Abstract The effects of variations in stiffness and geometry on the nonuniformity of tires are investigated by using the finite element analysis. In order to evaluate tire uniformity, a three-dimensional finite element model of the tire with imperfections is developed. This paper considers how imperfections, such as variations in stiffness or geometry and run-out, contribute to detrimental effects on tire nonuniformity. It is found that the radial force variation of a tire with imperfections depends strongly on the geometrical variations of the tire.

To research the load upper bracket of Francis hydroelectric unit, then established the finite-element model, and analyzed the structure stress of 7 operating condition points with the ANSYS software. By the strain rosette test, acquired the data of stress-strain in the area of stress concentration of the upper bracket. The inaccuracy was considered below 5% by analyzing the contradistinction between the finite-element analysis and the test, and match the engineering precision and the test was reliable. The finite-element method could be used to judge the stress of the upper bracket, and it could provide reference for the Structural optimization and improvement too.

This paper aims at presenting and discussing the numerical studies performed to estimate the mechanical and thermal behavior of RC flat slabs at elevated temperature and fire. The numerical analysis is carried out using finite element programs by developing models to simulate the performance of the buildings subjected to fire. The mechanical and thermal properties of the materials obtained from the experimental work are involved in the modeling that the outcomes will be more realistic. Many parameters related to fire resistance of the flat slabs have been studied and the finite element analysis results reveal that the width and thickness of the slab, the temperature gradient, the fire direction, the exposure duration and the thermal restraint are important factors that influence the vertical deflection, bending moment and force membrane of the flat slabs exposed to fire. However, the validation of the models is verified by comparing their results to the available experimental date. The finite element modeling contributes in saving cost and time consumed by experiments.

Frame has important effects on the performance of the whole of heavy semi-trailer. A heavy semi-trailer frame is analyzed and researched on in the finite-element way in this article. The frame of 3D geometric model is established by using Pro/E. And it was imported into the Hypermesh to establish frame finite element model. Frame are calculated by using ANSYS solver in bending condition, emergency braking conditions and rapid turn conditions of stress and deformation conditions. The computational tools and methods we used provide the new type of frame and development with a reference method to refer to in this paper.

Abstract Submerged pressure shell’s corrosion situation is more serious due to bad work environment, complex structure and difficulty of maintenance. Based on the analysis of calculation method of submerged pressure shell structures with non-corrosion, the calculation formula of pressure shell with pitting corrosion is given. The Finite Element Model is constructed and its residual strength is investigated. The relationships between shell stress and some parameters, such as radius of corrosion pit, depth of corrosion pit and location of corrosion pit are studied. Based on the finite element analysis results, the effect of radius of corrosion pit on the stress of pressure shell with pitting corrosion is analyzed. Furthermore, the influence coefficients of residual strength of pressure shell due to depth and location of pitting corrosion are determined, which provide a reference for the strength evaluation of submerged pressure shell with pitting corrosion.

The natural rubber compound of each layer of solid tire had determined the mechanical properties in tension. It was found that the stress-strain relation of each material tire layer was fitted very well with the Ogden constitutive model. The R2 which was 0.986, 0.996 and 0.985 represented the certain curve fitting on the internal, middle and tread layer of solid tire, respectively. Subsequently, the Ogden model was implemented in the finite element model of the rubber specimen and solid tire. The finite element analysis results obtained an average error of 18.00% and 14.63% for the specimen and solid tire model by comparing to the physical experiment, respectively. Particularly, the mechanical properties of the natural compounds could be used to predict the ultimate compression load for the solid tire failure.

In the traditional designs of milling cutter, we cannot get the required accuracy of machining as there may be local deformation on the edges, even more the cutter can break down. Aiming at this situation, a finite-element model of straight pin milling cutter with helical tooth are built using Marc, a nonlinear finite-element analysis software, the different cutting forces of the milling cutter during the cutting process are analyzed and the cutting forces of the milling cutter at different parameters are studied. We get the stress, the strain and the temperature distribution of the milling cutter in different situation. Our work offer a theoretical basis of improving stress of the cutter, designing the structure of cutters reasonably and analyzing the cutter failure as well as a new method of analysis and calculation of the cutter life and strength.

Using hot aggregates, in concrete production, results in a drop in compressive strength of the produced concrete. Various methods have been proposed for cooling concrete aggregates. This paper proposes a new design for a conveyor system for cooling the aggregates during hot seasons. Simulation of the heat flow during the cooling process over the conveyor is analyzed with the objective of understanding the effect of the various design parameters and achieving minimum cooling time with the least possible power. A finite element model for the new design is proposed and discussed. Challenges facing numerical simulation are addressed in this paper. The results of the finite element analysis of the new design are presented for various initial conditions and cooling rates.

In this paper, the clamping unit of a two-platen injection molding machine was modeled by Pro/ENGINEER, and was imported to Altair HyperWorks. In HyperMesh module, the finite element model was set up, ANSYS has been used in the finite element analysis of the clamping unit and the deformation and stress results were obtained. Based on the topology optimization of HyperWorks/OptiStruct, recommendations to improve the structure of the clamping mechanism are presented; the results showed that less material was used while its performance was maintained.
