Strategic projects are large scale, complex, and require significant investments and resources. These projects aim at gaining long-term social and economic benefits. Therefore, organizations focusing on strategic projects should use a consistent approach that suits their strategy, capability, and long-term expectations. Based on the four research questions and content analysis of the literature, generic processes used for the strategic project selection in tandem with the managerial capabilities are identified in this paper. The generic processes and managerial capabilities are used to develop a generic framework for strategic project selection. The framework is used for literature analysis in the paper. The review shows that both qualitative and quantitative methods are used for strategic project selection. Some possible research directions have also been proposed at the end of the review. The paper provides value to both researchers and practitioners in terms of tools available and a guidance on project selection through a structured process framework.

In visitor studies, there has been some debate about the use of qualitative versus quantitative research methods. Many evaluators understand the advantages and disadvantages of both methods, but deciding on the most appropriate method can still be problematic. This article summarizes the tenets of both qualitative and quantitative methods and provides examples of visitor studies for each. It also reviews several research studies that have successfully used mixed methods to evaluate visitors.

The article considers the history of formation of qualitative and quantitative methodological approaches in sociology. The  historical reconstruction of the fundamental ideas of representatives of these areas makes it possible to better understand their relationship, to determine the possibilities of their interaction in the study of social reality. In this regard, the article analyses the qualitative and quantitative strategy of sociological research taking into account their ontological, epistemological, axiological and methodological principles. A meaningful analysis of the three «waves», the stages of sociological cognition makes it possible to understand the specifics of the development of sociological knowledge, determine central ideas and values, and better understand the dynamics of the interaction of existing approaches and paradigms. Qualitative and quantitative methodological approaches in social sciences arose almost simultaneously, but their further development was extremely uneven, and their use to study and explain social reality for a long time was not based on the principles of parity interaction. The expansion of the practice of sociological research in a situation of high dynamics of social processes made it possible to increase the level of research culture, the understanding of values and cognitive differences in qualitative and quantitative methodologies made it possible and necessary to use them together. The basis for combining qualitative and quantitative methodological approaches is their functional additionality, which is expressed in the ability to most fully represent various aspects of the study of the same subject area. We are talking about methodological, conceptual triangulation as a strategy for the interaction of qualitative and quantitative approaches in the study of social problems using qualitative and quantitative methods for collecting and analysing sociological information. Such a technique increases the completeness and reliability of the received information, expands research capabilities.

The focus on the simultaneous solution of social, economic and environmental problems allows to form programs of sustainable and inclusive development, which should be based on innovative projects that provide more efficient use of resources with higher returns, increase productivity, increase the level of intellectualization of production. A special feature of innovative projects is their high level of risk. This has a decisive influence on management decisions regarding their implementation. That is why risk assessment of innovative projects occupies a special place in the field of economic research. The purpose of the article is to substantiate the theoretical and methodological principles of selection of innovative projects by the subjects of the agricultural sector of the economy on the basis of the proposed methods of assessing their risk. It has been established that one of the key aspects of comparing projects and portfolios is risk consideration. The list of risk groups of innovative projects is established. It is proposed to use evaluation by quantitative methods (statistical, analytical, cost-effectiveness method, normative method) and qualitative (impact analysis, probability of loss analysis, expert method). As a result of evaluation, data sets are formed for each individual project, which include the values of quantitative indicators of the effects of agroinnovation, ranking values for qualitative parameters of achieving benefits, quantitative values of risks and integral value for qualitative risk assessment determined using fuzzy sets. The process of assessing the impact of risks on the qualitative parameters of the effects of the implementation of agro-innovative projects and the procedure for assessing the generalized impact of risks on all qualitative parameters on the project using the fuzzy set method are detailed. The implementation of the developed algorithm allows to ensure a synergistic effect from the interaction of agro-innovative projects in the process of ensuring the innovative development of the agricultural sector of Ukraine’s economy.

The article is devoted to the assessment of the on-site generation effectiveness taking into account the risk associated with the uncertainty of future values of energy prices. It is shown that the economic efficiency is significantly affected by the unevenness of growth in energy prices and the correlation between load profile and graph of wholesale electricity prices.Restrictions on the applying existing approaches to evaluating the effectiveness of investment projects, based on calculation of uniquely defined cash flows, are approved. The paper shows the necessity of taking risks into account in order to increase the quality of decisions given the influence of energy resources prices on project’s economic efficiency and the uncertainty of future price values. Based on the analysis of quantitative methods of risk assessment it is proposed to use fuzzy-set approach as one of the most effective methods in the conditions of uncertainty of future values.

Abstract Decomposition of cellulose to glucose requires complex cooperation of glycoside hydrolase enzymes. As a result of glycoside β-1,4 bonds hydrolysis, shorter chains of cellulose, oligodextrin, cellobiose and glucose are created. A number of bacteria and fungi demonstrate the capacity to degrade cellulose. Their activity can be assessed with the use of qualitative and quantitative methods. Qualitative methods with the use of e.g. Congo red, are used in screening studies, however, they do not provide information about the quantity of the produced enzyme. Spectrophotometric methods are more accurate and they measure the quantities of reducing sugars with the use of appropriate substrates, e.g. carboxymethylcellulose is used to determine endoglucanases, avicel cellulose to determine exoglucanases and Whatman filter paper to determine total cellulolytic activity. Activity of microorganisms depends not only on their species or type but also, among others, on substratum composition, cultivation conditions and the appropriate selection of parameters of the carried out enzymatic reactions.

The goal set for the present study is to investigate the temporal and spatial deixis which are used to represent and build the national identity of Pakistan in the two leading indigenous English newspapers. The study investigates how the WAR and NATION frames are used in the opinion articles of The News and DAWN to project the negative image of Pakistan by using temporal and spatial deixis. The data collection is based on the ten years of opinion articles from 2007–2017. The political situation of Pakistan in the year 2007 was crucial and it is marked as a step towards the revival of civilian democracy through the announcement of general election in Pakistan during the ongoing war on terror. Purposive sampling technique is used in the selection of data. The theoretical foundation is based on the Anderson’s (1991) Imagined community. The empirical framework is based on Harts’ (2014) Critical Cognitive Discourse Analysis. Both qualitative and quantitative methods are employed. Antconc is used to generate the frequencies and concordance lines of the text. The data analysis shows that journalists mostly projected the negative image of Pakistan by utilizing different deixis and by linking the events of past from shared memories with the present and the future events by conceptualizing WAR and NATION Frames.

This chapter reviews the long history of the practice of text criticism and scholarly editing and looks into the recent development of more objective methods based on mathematical techniques. It discusses how various qualitative and quantitative methods have been used in modern editions and proposes a typology of editions based on three dimensions: the reproduction of the source, the rendering of the process lying behind the text, and the selection of sources for the actual edition. While the practice of editing has a long history, it is commonly accepted that the foundation of editing as a scholarly or even scientific activity was created in the first half of the nineteenth century. From this time, strict and formal methods were being introduced in textual editing—notably, the use of shared errors.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to consider the merits of using projects bonds to finance infrastructure investment projects and considers the pricing of such bonds and the level of risk premium demanded by the market. Design/methodology/approach – The research used a mix of qualitative and quantitative methods with desk-based study and interviews. Interviews were held with policy makers, local authority staff, planners, developers, investors, fund managers and academics. Infrastructure bond data were obtained from the Bloomberg database on all project bonds issued in four Asian countries – Malaysia, China, Taiwan and India – over the period 2003-2014. Findings – The analysis indicates investor appetite for project bonds and suggests that a risk premium of between 150 and 300 basis points over the comparable government bond is appropriate depending on the sector and the degree of government involvement in underwriting the issue. Practical implications – The paper argues that the introduction of project bonds would be an important innovation, assisting the financing of infrastructure investment at a time when bank lending is likely to remain fragile. The current conditions in the sovereign debt market, where strong demand has forced down yields, has opened up the opportunity to introduce project bonds offering a higher yield to satisfy institutional investment demand for long term fixed income products. Originality/value – The originality of this paper stems from the analysis of the merits of using projects bonds to finance infrastructure investment projects, the pricing of such bonds and the level of risk premium demanded by the market.
