OBJECTIVE: This research was conducted to prove the existence of an anti-fibrosis effect in the ethanol extract of Moringa oleifera (MO) leaves on the liver. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The liver fibrosis rat model was injected with chronic CCl4. The ethanol extract of MO leaves was divided into three doses (150, 300, and 600 mg/kg body weight) and given through oral gavage. RESULTS: The results of the histopathological analysis showed that the administration of MO ethanol extract could inhibit liver fibrosis as indicated by lower METAVIR scores than positive control rats. The immunohistochemical expression of collagen-1 in MO-fed rats also showed a decrease. The same thing was seen in the double-immunofluorescence staining analysis of α-SMA and tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases-1 (TIMP-1), where the administration of MO ethanol extract decreased both markers. CONCLUSIONS: This study concluded that the increase in collagen-1, α-SMA, and TIMP-1 simultaneously caused a more severe degree of fibrosis (METAVIR score). The ethanol extract of MO leaves was proven to be able to inhibit the progression of liver fibrosis by reducing the expression of all three markers.

This study aims to determine whether mangosteen rind extract (in the form of ethanol extract/EE) can be used as an anti-diarrhea drug after compared with other anti-diarrhea substances in three experimental groups. This research is an in vitro experimental study using adult male guinea pigs weighing 400-600 gr through the standard method of Magnus with the Latin square controlled experiment design. The study was conducted at the Pharmacology and Toxicology Laboratory of the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of North Sumatra. The results showed that the contraction of ileum in Ach with Atp + Ach compared the difference in contraction of ileum Ach with EE + Ach showed the difference in difference between the two contractions of the ileum was significant, the contraction of ileum in His with Dip + His compared indifference in contraction of ileum His with EE + His showed a difference indifference. the two ileal contractions are significant, the ileal contraction in the bar with Papa + Bar compared to the difference between the ileum bar contraction with EE + Bar shows no difference in the difference between the two ileum contractions. The conclusion is that the Mangosteen Skin Ethanol Extract works similarly to Papaverine Hydrochloride which is an antidiarrheal drug used to relax smooth muscles so that it can also make blood vessels dilate by relaxing smooth muscles in the walls of blood vessels.

Background:Mangosteen peel is one of the waste of mangosteen, that nowadays have already utilized much to manage health problems. One of the ingredients in the mangosteen fruit skin is a polyphenols. Objective: to determine the polyphenols content of the ethanol extract of mangosteen peel variations based on different regions. Methods: Powder of dried mangosteen peel that come from 3 difference areas, Sumatera (Pekanbaru), Jawa (Yogyakarta) and Kalimantan (Martapura) extracted with ethanol 70% by multilevel maceration. Extract that obtained than tested specific parameter form of qualitative test of polyphenols compounds with FeCl3, AlCl3, ammonia vapor, Folin Ciucalteau and tannin test. Determination level of polyphenols (Gallic acid) with visible spectrophotometri after reacted with Folin Ciucalteau reagent. Results: The result of this research was quality test of extract etanol 70% Specific parameter test total phenol content (mg GAE/g ekstrak) from Sumatera, Jawa and Kalimantan are :824.13 (mg GAE/g ekstrak); 155,86 (mg GAE/g ekstrak); 688,9 (mg GAE/g ekstrak). Conclusions: There were difference in contents of polyphenol of mangosteen peel origin among Sumatera, Jawa and Kalimantan.

Purpose: To determine the phenolic and flavonoid contents of R. sativus rhizome ethanol extract and the hepatoprotective effect of the extract in rats. Methods: Folin–Ciocalteau and aluminum chloride colorimetric tests were used to determine the contents of phenols and flavonoids in the R. sativus extract. Male Sprague-Dawley rats induced with CCl4 to develop hepatotoxicity were treated orally with R. sativus extract for 4 weeks. The  antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of the extract on the liver were determined by evaluating the concentration of oxidative analytes, serum liver enzymes and lipids, and hepatic histopathology and cytochrome P450 2E1 expression. Results: R. sativus extract significantly (p < 0.05) reduced the hepatotoxic effect of CCl4 via its antioxidant activities and protection of liver tissues from oxidative damage. Conclusion: The hepatoprotective effects of R. sativus rhizome ethanol extract are attributed to its highphenolic and flavonoid contents. Hwangryunhaedok-tang (HRT) is a traditional oriental herbal formula used in Asian countries for treating inflammatory diseases and controlling fever. Our present study aimed to determine whether HRT has therapeutic effects for patients with vascular dementia (VaD) using a bilateral common carotid artery occlusion (BCCAO) rat model and assessing spatial memory impairment and activation of neuroinflammation. BCCAO was performed in male Sprague Dawley rats to induce VaD, and oral HRT was administered daily for 30 d. Our data showed that HRT ameliorated BCCAO-induced memory and cognitive impairment in behavioral tests. In addition, HRT reversed cholinergic dysfunction and neuronal damage in the hippocampus of BCCAO rats. Furthermore, HRT attenuated microglial activation and reduced the phosphorylation of p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase and c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) induced by BCCAO. Simultaneous high-performance liquid chromatography analysis of HRT using index compounds from the herbal composition revealed that both HRT ethanol extract and commercial HRT granules primarily comprise geniposide, baicalin, and berberine. Our study showed that HRT administration resulted in the prevention of neuronal injury induced by BCCAO through improvement of cholinergic dysfunction and inhibition of neuroinflammatory responses, suggesting that HRT may have potential as a treatment for VaD.

In this study, the phytochemical composition and the possible prophylactic effects of an aqueous ethanol extract of Haematoxylon campechianum flowers (HCF) on peripheral neuropathic pain in a chronic constriction injury (CCI) rat model are investigated. Rats with induced CCI were subjected to neuropathic pain behaviour tests and evaluated by chemical, thermal, and mechanical sensation tests and functional recovery of the brain stem and sciatic nerve at 7- and 14-day intervals. The effect of the extract on acute pain and inflammation is also investigated. The extract exerted both peripheral and central analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties in addition to antipyretic effects that are clear from targeting COX, LOX and PGE. It was found that CCI produced significant thermal and mechanical hyperalgesia, cold allodynia and deleterious structural changes in both sciatic nerve and brain stem. Treatments with HCF extract significantly improved cold and thermal withdrawal latency, mechanical sensibility and ameliorated deleterious changes of sciatic nerve and brain stem at different dose levels. The extract also ameliorated oxidative stress and inflammatory markers in brain stem and sciatic nerve. It suppressed the apoptotic marker, p53, and restored myelin sheath integrity. The effects of HCF extract were more potent than pregabalin. Fifteen secondary metabolites, mainly gallotannins and flavonoids, were characterized in the extract based on their retention times and MS/MS data. The identified phenolic constituents from the extract could be promising candidates to treat neuropathic pain due to their diverse biological activities, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties.
