Abstract Background The development of professional identity is a fundamental element of medical education. There is evidence that in Germany, students’ perceptions of the ideal and real doctor differ, and that of themselves as physicians falls between these constructs. We sought to compare students’ perceptions of themselves, the ideal doctor, and the ‘real’ doctor and investigate differences from first to final year in the relationships between these constructs, as well as differences between Australian and German cohorts. Method Students in the first and final years of their medical program at one Australian and one German university were invited to complete the Osgood and Hofstatter polarity profile, involving the description of their mental image of the ideal and real doctor, and the doctor they hope to become, with adjectives provided. Results One hundred sixty-seven students completed the survey in Australia (121 year 1, 46 year 5) and 188 in Germany (164 year 1, 24 year 6). The perception of the ideal doctor was consistent across all respondents, but that of the real doctor and self-image differed between country and year. Differences existed between country cohorts in perceptions of ‘confidence’, ‘strength’, ‘capability’ and ‘security’. Conclusions The pattern previously reported among German students was maintained, but a different pattern emerged among Australian students. Differences between countries could reflect cultural differences or variations in the overt and hidden curricula of medical schools. Some of the constructs within the profiles are amenable to educational interventions to improve students’ confidence and sense of capability.

The professional identity of student nurses may fluctuate or even disintegrate when exposed to clinical realities. A self-identity must be integrated firstly with new expectations and modified within a social context to form a professional identity. In the process of developing a professional identity, student nurses either develop a self-concept within a professional role based on attributes, beliefs, values, motives, experiences, morals and ideals of who and what a nurse is, or lack to develop in this role. This study targeted to investigate the perceptions of Saudi student nurses in the evolution of a professional identity. A non-probabilistic and descriptive approach was selected for data collection. A Nurses Professional Identity Scale was constructed by the researcher to explore the evolution of a professional identity as perceived by Saudi student nurses. Mean scores indicated the importance of the self-presentation, self-image, self-esteem, self-categorization and self-concept as dimensions, which facilitates a professional identity. The p-values obtained for all the factors were less than the level of significance (p-value<0.05), which indicated the importance of all the associated factors. The significance of how student nurses identify themselves as professionals during the Baccaulearate program in various role formation has been emphasized. These roles are still undervalued by society and influences stereotypical attitudes.

Рассматриваются понятия личного бренда, профессиональной идентичности, самоконструирования и трансляции образа себя в социальной сети. Проведён сравнительный анализ самопрезентации и построения блогерами личного бренда за рубежом и в России. Использован метод контент-анализа самопрезентации личного бренда бьюти- и фэшн-блогеров социальной сети Instagrаm, методологическая основа теории интеракционизма И. Гоффмана [2]. Было выявлено: для конструирования и укрепления образа «я» в представление «других» блогеры используют визуальные средства (фото/видео), а для расширения социальных взаимодействий блогеры используют технические возможности: Instagram-хэштеги, отметки пользователей и брендов. Исследование направлено на изучение личного бренда, профессиональной идентичности блогеров как новой профессиональной группы современного общества, а также позволяет сравнить способы самопрезентации личных брендов зарубежных и российских блогеров. The article discusses the concepts of personal brand, professional identity, self-construction and translation of self-image in a social network. The aim of the study is a comparative analysis of self-presentation and the creation by bloggers of a personal brand abroad and in Russia. The method of content analysis of self-presentation of the personal brand of beauty and fashion bloggers of the social network Instagram was used, the methodological basis of I. Hoffman's theory of interactionism [2]. As a result, it was revealed that bloggers use visual means (photos / videos) to design and strengthen the image of «I» in the representation of «others», and to expand social interactions, they use the technical capabilities of Instagram - hashtags, user and brand marks. This study fills the gaps in the study of personal brand, professional identity of bloggers as a new professional group of modern society, and also allows to compare the ways of personal presentation of personal brand of foreign and Russian bloggers.

Abstract: Introduction: A main determinant of professional identity is the integrity of the discipline. The complexity of psychiatry in biological, psychological and sociological aspects is a typical instance of the necessity for integration. Aim: Based on the bio-psycho-social dimensions and on their opinion about acceptance of psychiatry, we explored the professional identities of physicians working in Hungarian contemporary psychiatry. Method: Voluntary, anonymous responses were collected by using a 10-point evaluation scale on professional attitude, appreciation of psychiatry from lay society and other medical professions, and the importance of biology, psychology and sociology within psychiatry. Results: The 228 respondents showed a highly significant effect of basic sciences: biology was the most relevant followed by psychology and sociology. Specialists in psychiatry (n = 171) showed a more marked preference for biology than the trainees, while specialists in psychotherapy (n = 74) considered the psychological component significantly more important than other respondents. The public acceptance of psychiatry was low as compared with other medical professions. Conclusions: The consistency between self-image and profession shows that the multidimensionality of psychiatry is not primarily an individual challenge. The impact on identity shows the key importance of education. Improving the prestige of psychiatry requires keeping our professional identity up-to-date, communicating with physicians with different preferences, and cooperating with other medical professions. The main objective was to measure the professional identity of nurses and to evaluate the ways to measure and develop the Nurse’s Professional Identity Scale (NPIS) as perceived by Saudi student nurses. The study employed a quantitative research design to assess the measurement scale of Nurse’s Professional Identity. Data collection was done through a questionnaire from 442 student nurses, who have been recruited through a randomized sampling approach. A factor analysis identified five-factor dimensions within a multi-dimensional structure of 45 items. Factor 1 has been identified as the most important factor on self-presentation as most significant and important to the technique of constructing and forming a professional identity. Factor 2 has accounted for 5.62; Factor 3 has accounted for 5.14; Factor 4 has accounted for 4.29; and Factor 5 has accounted for 4.25. Factor 1 consisted of 16 variables and all items with loadings greater than (>0.3), which deals with self-esteem. It has been evaluated that the nursing professional identity scale can be used to adapt and assess the developing/forming stages of student nurses and the variables needed for constituting a professional identity. Self-presentation, self-image, self-esteem, self-categorization and self-concept are directly associated with certain activities, interventions, and approaches required to be developed.

ABSTRACT Objectives: to know the meaning of contemporary nursing from the experience of intensive care nurses. Methods: qualitative research based on the theoretical framework of Symbolic Interactionism and the methodological framework of Interpretive Interactionism. The setting was a general hospital in Bahia, being carried out with 12 nurses working in intensive care for at least one year, through semi-structured interviews and drawing-text-theme technique, whose data were organized according to Miles and Huberman and analyzed upon the referential. Results: the sense of being a nurse was evidenced; a being for care, resulting from the experience in intensive care, capable of promoting the development of professional self-image, by causing, in nurses, other skills - besides the scientific ones, such as empathy, creativity, spirituality and compassion. Final Considerations: the sense of being a nurse, currently, expresses developments inherited from the Nightingalean proposal, but transcends the technical-managerial emphasis of this to a humanistic care perspective converging with our contemporary professional identity: a being for care.

This overview focuses on a multidimensional psychosocial construct of career adaptability, to which a special attention has been paid recently. Career adaptability indicates individual’s means of coping with current or anticipated challenges, changes and traumas in professional roles. The study provides a description of career adaptability construct creation, its definition and dimensions – interest, control, curiosity and self-confidence. Further, tools for career adaptability measurement and selected empirical findings about career adaptability are presented. Focus is, among other things, on the relation of career adaptability and demographical variables, personality traits, self-image, self-esteem, confidence in own abilities, professional identity, time orientation, academic success, career vocation, career satisfaction etc. Presented theoretical and empirical findings are important for career counsellors and teachers of career education, who can, based on the knowledge of career adaptability, suggest interventions reflecting specific needs of individual clients and students.

This study aimed to examine professional identity of ICT teachers following educational changes in ICT education and technology integration, introduced by Ministry of National Education (MoNE) in Turkey. Professional identity was investigated under the factors of commitment, self-image, knowledge and skills, value, thoughts and beliefs, future perspective, task perception, job motivation, job satisfaction, self-esteem, and self-efficacy. This study used a qualitative, content analysis method. Data collection included a total of 302617 online messages posted on the online forum between 2005 and 2015, and the circular notes, instructions, regulations and official correspondence of the institutions between the years of 1995 and 2015 in order to identify the decisions taken by MoNE. The data from the online forum and official documents were analyzed using the content analysis. The results show that the professional identities of ICT teachers were negatively affected in the process of changes that lasted for 11 years. Excessive workload and roles and responsibilities unrelated to the profession negatively affected ICT teachers in teachers’ task perceptions, motivation, self-image, commitment, and future perspective. Professional identity was also negatively affected by changes in the decisions related to ICT course and increasing responsibilities stemming from the projects introduced by MoNE.

Analisa a dinâmica que determina a escolha da carreira docente, a partir de representações de um grupo de professores de 1ª a 4ª série, supondo que ela é impulsionada por razões que podem ser circunscritas histórica e geograficamente. Procura primeiramente compreender a lógica das escolhas profissionais, elucidar a noção de carreira e distinguir as motivações que influíram na decisão desses professores ou que os impelem a outras profissões, despertando velhos sonhos e nutrindo novas ambições. Para tanto, constrói um esquema de interpretação, destacando algumas lógicas que orientam o percurso escolar e influenciam os itinerários profissionais: a lógica de integração, relacionada com a imagem de si mesmos; a lógica de profissionalização, associada à sua inserção no mundo do trabalho; e a lógica de transformação, que faz referência à sua função social. Palavras-chave: carreira do magistério; corpo docente; identidade profissional. Abstract His study analyses the dynamic which determine the choice of the teaching career, beginning from a group of primary teachers, supposing it is stimulated by reasons that can be historical and geographically circumscribed. Firstly, we tried to understand the logic of these professional choices. We also tried to elucidate the concept of career and distinguish the motivations that had influenced in these teachers decisions, or that impelled them to other professions, awaking old dreams and feeding new ambitions. To understand this, we built a scheme of interpretation, highlighting some logics that guide the scholastic course and influence the professional journey: the integration logic related to self image: the professionalization associated to work market insertion; and the logic of transformation that makes reference to its social functions. Summary: My comment is basically restricted to the situation in which less-able students find themselves and refers only to literature in German. From this point of view I am basically able to confirm Marsh's results. It must, however, be said that with less-able pupils the opposite effect can be found: Levels of self-esteem in these pupils are raised, at least temporarily, by separate instruction, academic performance however drops; combined instruction, on the other hand, leads to improved academic performance, while levels of self-esteem drop. Apparently, the positive self-image of less-able pupils who receive separate instruction does not bring about the potential enhancement of academic performance one might expect from high-ability pupils receiving separate instruction. To resolve the dilemma, it is proposed that individual progress in learning be accentuated, and that comparisons with others be dispensed with. This fosters a self-image that can in equal measure be realistic and optimistic.
