Abstract The purpose of this study is to determine what good coaching during design-based learning (DBL) entails by integrating theoretical and practical perspectives on good coaching. For this purpose, a grounded theory approach was used. For the practical perspective, themes on good coaching were derived from a qualitative study on coaching by observing and interviewing teachers and students involved in a DBL project. For the theoretical perspective, we consulted and analyzed literature on scaffolding, feedback, and formative assessment and coaching in problem-based learning from the learning sciences and the studio model from arts and design literature. Synthesizing themes from both perspectives led to the development of a theoretical coaching model consisting of three main categories (and four subcategories), seventeen themes and thirteen propositions. The model and propositions might be of use for those involved in coaching students in DBL and provide relevant directions for research on coaching in DBL.

The purpose of this study was to determine the results of online learning training for art teachers in Pandeglang-Banten through Edmodo Mobile-Application to be applied in art learning in schools. This qualitative study used a research sample of 40 training participants with a purposive sampling technique. The research data were obtained from the results of questionnaires and observations. The results showed that the mobile-application edomodo is one of the applications that can be accessed via smartphones or other technological devices such as laptops and computers, which can be used as a forum or means of art learning by both teachers and students through several features that can be used as access to learning media taught by students and teachers. The results of this training are able to improve the pedagogical ability and professionalism of teachers in implementing technology-based art learning. The conclusion of this study is that the skills of teachers in using technology in art learning in the industrial era 4.0 need to be improved as an effort to adapt to various technological and information developments that must be utilized in art education.

Douglas Biklen has done extensive research into a method for facilitating communication for people with autism. His article is a rich qualitative study of a facilitative communication method developed by Rosemary Crossley and her colleagues at the Dignity through Education and Language Communication Centre in Melbourne, Australia. This method challenges both Biklen's assumptions and those widely held in the field about the ability of people with autism to communicate. He demonstrates how people who have been labeled severely autistic can selectively communicate with certain facilitators, and in certain circumstances. In so doing, they not only challenge our widely held assumptions about autism, but also illustrate the effectiveness of an "education-through-dialogue approach" in which teachers and students learn from each other and where school validates personal expression.

Silence is traditionally understood as a power deficit; yet, it creates spaces in which power works unobtrusively. In this article, I report the findings of a qualitative study examining silence in school relationships. Based on nine conceptual discussions and 33 interviews with teachers and students in a secondary school in the UK, I assert that uses of silence in relationships between students and teachers revolve around two conceptions of power: a stronghold of respect and a refuge for dignity.

Abstract The purpose of this study is to compare the student's and teacher’s perceptions about their current English textbook they used. This study categorized as a descriptive qualitative study. The population of VIII grade students (45 students) of junior high school was involved in this study and an English teacher of them too. The questionnaire and semi-structured interview were used as the instrument of this research. Besides, the guideline of the interview and questionnaire was from [1]Cunningsworth's (1995) theory which is explained about the book evaluation. The data were analyzed through Google form percentage presentation for the questionnaire while transcription, coding was used for the interview section. The result showed, 75% of students believed that the book they used has good quality. While the rest 25% felt it did not fulfill their expectation and need. Besides, the teachers’ perception supports it with some of the books’ part lacks organization and employed too many vocabularies. Whereas the students felt their current level was not suitable with the teachers’ beliefs, but the teacher believed that it was appropriate with the students’ level. So, there were few different perceptions between them.  However, the teacher believed that her role in helping students with textbook usage could help the main point of students’ need due to the teacher has lack of knowledge and awareness to do coursebook evaluation. Therefore, further research needs to be done to make this study more comprehensive.

Purpose of the study: This research aims to analyze parents’ perceptions towards the learning of English and the ways they help their children deal with English and language assessment. Methodology: This qualitative study addresses 74 Chilean parents’ perceptions of English teaching and learning. A semi-structured interview was conducted to capture the participants’ perceptions. The data were categorized using content and frequency analysis and the principles of metaphoric analysis. Main findings: The findings suggest that parents hold a positive perception of the English language and believe it is useful for their children’s lives even though they might find the learning of the language difficult. Social implications/Originality: Participants can produce metaphors that regard English as an ability and metaphors that focus on the process of learning the language. The findings of this research are useful for university stakeholders, teachers, preservice teachers, and students. Novelty/Originality of this study: In this study parents, stakeholders who have usually left aside from the language teaching and learning process, are interviewed to unfold their perceptions of what they see and believe when their children learn English.

The 2013 curriculum is a revision of ideas derived from the previous curriculum where students’ active performance is imposed in study. One of students’ physical activities expected from Indonesian language instruction is speaking or actively involving in class conversation. Therefore, this study aims at describing the structure of teachers and students’ conversation in Indonesian language teaching interaction. This is a descriptive qualitative study. The techniques of data obtaining are recording and taking notes, and the technique of data analysis is heuristic. The result of this study shows the conversation structures in Indonesian language instruction are 1) turn taking occurred when there is a chance to speak. 2) pausing (long and short) occurred since there is no response and when there is hesitation in delivering messages. 3) overlapping occurred since there is a similar utterance or language element produced simultaneously. 4) backchanneling occurred since there are comprehension and acceptance or agreement towards utterances, and 5) adjacency pairs occurred since there are greetings, questions, and requests. The increasing number of the so-called non-native English users has resulted in their views of English to be crucial. This qualitative study of thirty-two Indonesian lecturers, teachers, and students is aimed at revealing perceptions of English in relation to communication, culture, and national as well as religious identities. The findings reveal various perceptions of the language. Some references to Caucasians as potential interlocutors are found even though the participants believe that English has been used among ‘non-native’ speakers and that the relationship between English and the West is diminishing. The participants also view English as either not related or positively related to their national, religious, and ethnic identities. Overall, there is a demand for accentuating English in Indonesia with the local cultures.

Despite consensus regarding critical design elements for professional development (PD), numerous PD studies have not shown anticipated effects for teachers or students. Mixed methods studies investigating when and why PD is successful are needed. The qualitative study reported here was part of a larger, mixed methods study of PD for self-regulated strategy development (SRSD) in writing; the randomized controlled trial found significant and meaningful outcomes for teachers and students. In the current qualitative study, 14 Grades 2 and 3 teachers discussed semistructured, open-ended questions in small focus groups regarding their experiences with, reactions to, and evaluations of aspects and components of PD and SRSD. These teachers’ voices contribute to our understanding of critical aspects of effective PD as well as SRSD.

The new geological epoch Anthropocene poses a significant problem to people because it shows how human activities have started to change and shape the world negatively to a big extent. One way to deal with this problem is education, including English language teaching. In English language teaching, course books can be used to deal with the Anthropocene. When the literature was reviewed, it was seen that English language course books were evaluated according to English language teachers’ and students’ perspectives, but not with an Anthropocentric perspective. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate an English language course book used in Turkey with an Anthropocentric approach. It was designed as a qualitative study. The data collected were documented analyzed. Qualifications of the researcher and thick description were used for the trustworthiness of the research. The findings have indicated that the course book has units and parts of units related to nature. They have also shown that students can understand the relationship between people and nature by studying this course book. The results were discussed, and suggestions for further research were made.
