The immediacy of the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the sheer importance of internal and external communication with stakeholders. Universities had to rapidly grasp an unfolding and fast-changing crisis, gauge their level of preparedness, review decision and implementation processes, devise strategies, and adapt communication approaches. This exploratory study conducts a literature review in order to identify relevant studies that address how higher education institutions communicated to their stakeholders during the COVID-19 pandemic. The review of the literature revealed that although many higher education institutions had disaster recovery plans in place, few were well-equipped for a disruption of global proportions. Using a grounded theory approach, five important themes emerged from the relevant studies.

Ju Cirqueira. This chapter begins by looking at the importance of knowledge and information in agricultural development. Then the chapter discusses how the traditional mass media channels, viz., radio, print and television had been instrumental in India’s agricultural technology transfer. Next, it explores the characteristics of new media, the problems associated with the advent of Internet and how self-help groups and ICTs could be effectively used in technology transfer. The focus narrows to a comparative study on the effectiveness of traditional and new media in communicating farm technologies. Finally, the chapter examines how the extension agents, based on the results could formulate communication strategies for effectively using the mass media channels.

Abstract. Inundations and landslides are common phenomena that cause serious damage and pose a severe threat to the population of Italy. The societal and economic impact of landslides and floods in Italy is particularly severe, and strategies that target the mitigation of the effects of these events are essential. Although, in the last few years, the scientific community has wanted to communicate information on research activities regarding geo-hydrological hazards and the associated risks to society through thematic websites, very often, communication achieves specific technical purposes for experts. To address the problem posed by the lack of communication on geo-hydrological hazards with potential human consequences in Italy to the broader society, we designed the POLARIS website. The POLARIS website publishes accurate and detailed information on geo-hydrological risks, including periodical reports on landslide and flood risk to the population of Italy, data and analysis on specific damaging events and blog posts on landslide and flood events that able to encourage mass media and citizens' engagement. By monitoring the access of users to POLARIS since January 2014, when the website was published, we registered maximum access during the occurrence of the worst geo-hydrological events and for the promotion of relevant new content through press releases. In particular, in the latter case, we noted the highest access value when journalists promoted the website through television channels. The POLARIS initiative demonstrates how the scientific community can implement suitable communication strategies that address different societal audiences by exploiting the role of mass media and social media. These strategies can help these audiences to understand how risks can be reduced through appropriate measures and behaviors; thus, they can contribute to increasing the resilience of the population to geo-hydrological events.

Background: To support the strategy development for communication of the updated physical activity (PA) guidelines, the UK Chief Medical Officers’ Expert Panel for Communication was created. Methods: To help inform this process, a rapid review was performed to identify and describe how other nations are communicating their PA guidelines and PA generally. Elements of the health-enhancing physical activity policy audit tool created by the World Health Organization were used to investigate all 195 countries. Results: Seventy-seven countries had their own guidelines; 53 used the World Health Organization guidelines, and for 65 countries, no guidelines could be found. For the communication, 27 countries used infographics; 56 had government policies/documents, and 11 used a mass media campaign. Only 6 of these had been evaluated. Although many countries used infographics, there were no associated evaluations. As such, any future communication strategies should incorporate an evaluation. Mass media campaigns had the strongest evidence base, proving to be an effective strategy, particularly when incorporating aspects of social marketing. Conclusion: This review provides an insight into strategies countries worldwide have taken to communicate PA guidelines and PA promotion. These should be carefully considered when deciding how best to communicate and promote PA guidelines.

Social media increasingly shapes the way in which we perceive conflicts and conflict parties abroad. Conflict parties, therefore, have started using social media strategically to influence public opinion abroad. This book explores the phenomenon by examining, (1) which strategies of external communication conflict parties use during asymmetric conflicts and (2) what shapes the selection of these communication strategies. In a comprehensive case study of the conflict in Israel and Palestine, Bernd Hirschberger shows that the selection of strategies of external communication is shaped by the (asymmetric) conflict structure.
