UV light-assisted gas sensors based on metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) have attracted much attention in detecting flammable and explosive gases at room temperature. In this paper, graphite-based carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nanosheets-decorated ZnO porous hollow microspheres (PHMSs) with the size about 3~5 μm in diameter were successfully synthesized by annealing the solvothermally-synthesized Zn5(CO3)2(OH)6 PHMSs together with g-C3N4. The synthesized samples were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, FT-IR and XPS. The results indicated that the prepared g-C3N4/ZnO PHMSs were constructed by numerous loosely stacked ZnO nanoparticles of 20~30 nm in diameter. Gas sensing tests indicated that under UV light (365~385 nm) illumination, the sensors fabricated with g-C3N4/ZnO HPMSs showed an enhanced response and faster response speed than the pure ZnO counterpart at room temperature. In addition, the g-C3N4/ZnO sensor also exhibited good repeatability and long-term stability for CH4 detection.

In this work, nitrogen dioxide (NO2) gas sensors based on zinc oxide nanorods (ZnO NRs) decorated with gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) working under visible-light illumination with different wavelengths at room temperature are presented. The contribution of localized surface plasmon resonant (LSPR) by Au NPs attached to the ZnO NRs is demonstrated. According to our results, the presence of LSPR not only extends the functionality of ZnO NRs towards longer wavelengths (green light) but also increases the response at shorter wavelengths (blue light) by providing new inter-band gap energetic states. Finally, the sensing mechanism based on LSPR Au NPs is proposed.

Flexible and transparent sensors based on parallelly aligned In2O3 nanowires can detect ppb-level NO2 at room temperature under visible light (even under an iPhone screen). The sensing performances are maintained after bending and stability tests.

Tunneling studies between a Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM)-controlled fine NbN tip and a NbN thin film show single electron tunneling characteristics at room temperature. The I-V curves display the Coulomb blockade and the Coulomb staircase caused by single electron charging of a series combination of two tunnel junctions. These room temperature observations indicate that it may be possible to operate single-electron-based devices in non-cryogenic regimes.
