Abstract As the engine reached high speed, the exhaust valve temperature increased exponentially due to the exhaust gas produced by the combustion process between the mixture of air and fuel within the combustion chamber of the internal combustion engine. The valve is subjected to thermal loading due to high temperature and pressure within the cylinder, which must withstand a material temperature for sustainable and optimal operation. To avoid this loss, a perfect medium must be prepared to ensure that the heat is extracted smoothly. This can be done when the valve is in contact with the seat and there is a periodic heat transfer contact. Therefore, it is imperative to research the correlation between valve and valve seat to understand the two sections’ heat transfer mechanism. In this study, thermal contact analysis was used to identify heat transfer between the valve and the valve seat as both parts are interconnected. This research also has an interest in studying the two surface conduction mechanisms as the exhaust valve closed in steady-state conditions. Thus, this study portrays a significant method, particularly for the determining the distribution of temperature, heat flux, and heat flux direction between the valve and its seat using ANSYS Workbench.

Combustion chamber wall heat transfer is a major contributor to efficiency losses in diesel engines. In this context, thermal swing materials (adapting to the surrounding gas temperature) have been pinpointed as a promising mitigative solution. In this study, experiments are carried out in a high-pressure/high-temperature vessel to (a) characterise the wall heat transfer process ensuing from wall impingement of a combusting fuel spray, and (b) evaluate insulative improvements provided by a coating that promotes thermal swing. The baseline experimental condition resembles that of Spray A from the Engine Combustion Network, while additional variations are generated by modifying the ambient temperature as well as the injection pressure and duration. Wall heat transfer and wall temperature measurements are time-resolved and accompanied by concurrent high-speed imaging of natural luminosity. An investigation with an uncoated wall is carried out with several sensor locations around the stagnation point, elucidating sensor-to-sensor variability and setup symmetry. Surface heat flux follows three phases: (i) an initial peak, (ii) a slightly lower plateau dependent on the injection duration, and (iii) a slow decline. In addition to the uncoated reference case, the investigation involves a coating made of porous zirconia, an established thermal swing material. With a coated setup, the projection of surface quantities (heat flux and temperature) from the immersed measurement location requires additional numerical analysis of conjugate heat transfer. Starting from the traces measured beneath the coating, the surface quantities are obtained by solving a one-dimensional inverse heat transfer problem. The present measurements are complemented by CFD simulations supplemented with recent rough-wall models. The surface roughness of the coated specimen is indicated to have a significant impact on the wall heat flux, offsetting the expected benefit from the thermal swing material.

This paper investigates the effects of gear geometry, rotational speed and applied load, as well as lubrication conditions on surface temperature of high-speed gear teeth. The analytical approach and procedure for estimating frictional heat flux and heat transfer coefficients of gear teeth in high-speed operational conditions was developed and accounts for the effect of oil mist as a cooling medium. Numerical simulations of tooth temperature based on finite element analysis were established to investigate temperature distributions and variations over a range of applied load and rotational speed, which compared well with experimental measurements. A sensitivity analysis of surface temperature to gear configuration, frictional heat flux, heat transfer coefficients, and oil and ambient temperatures was conducted and the major parameters influencing surface temperature were evaluated.

s :This paper reviews of some applications of optical visualization system to compute the fuel-air mixing process during early stage of mixture formation and late injection in Diesel Combustion Engine. This review has shown that the mixture formation is controlled by the characteristics of the injection systems, the nature of the air swirl and turbulence in thecylinder, and spray characteristics. Few experimental works have been investigated and found that the effects of injection pressure and swirl ratio have a great effect on the mixture formation then affects to the flame development and combustion characteristics.This paper presents the significance of spray and combustion study with optical techniques access rapid compression machine that have been reported by previous researchers. Experimental results are presentedin order to provide in depth knowledge as assistance to readers interested in this research area. Analysis of flame motion and flame intensity in the combustion chamber was performed using high speed direct photographs and image analysis technique. The application of these methods to the investigation of diesel sprays highlights mechanisms which provide a better understanding of spray and combustion characteristics.

The objective of the present study was to investigate the relative contribution of the convective heat transfer in the forearm and hand to 1) the total heat loss during partial immersion in cold water [water temperature (Tw) = 20 degrees C] and 2) the heat gained during partial immersion in warm water (Tw = 38 degrees C). The heat fluxes from the skin of the forearm and finger were continuously monitored during the 3.5-h immersion of the upper limb (forearm and hand) with 23 recalibrated heat flux transducers. The last 30 min of the partial immersion were conducted with an arterial occlusion of the forearm. The heat flux values decreased during the occlusion period at Tw = 20 degrees C and increased at Tw = 38 degrees C for all sites, plateauing only for the finger to the value of the tissue metabolic rate (124.8 +/- 29.0 W/m3 at Tw = 20 degrees C and 287.7 +/- 41.8 W/m3 at Tw = 38 degrees C). The present study shows that, at thermal steady state during partial immersion in water at 20 degrees C, the convective heat transfer between the blood and the forearm tissue is the major heat source of the tissue and accounts for 85% of the total heat loss to the environment. For the finger, however, the heat produced by the tissue metabolism and that liberated by the convective heat transfer are equivalent. At thermal steady state during partial immersion in water at 38 degrees C, the blood has the role of a heat sink, carrying away from the limb the heat gained from the environment and, to a lesser extent (25%), the metabolic and conductive heats. These results suggest that during local cold stress the convective heat transfer by the blood has a greater role than that suggested by previous studies for the forearm but a lesser role for the hand.

A test rig was constructed to investigate flow boiling in an electrically heated horizontal mini-channel array. The test section is made of copper and consists of twelve parallel mini-channels. The channels are 1 mm deep, 1 mm wide and 250 mm long. The test section is heated from underneath with six cartridge heaters. The channels are covered with a glass plate to allow visual observations of the flow patterns using a high-speed video-camera. The wall temperatures are measured at five positions along the channel axis with two resistance thermometers in a specified distance in heat flow direction. Local heat transfer coefficients are obtained by calculating the local heat flux. The working fluids are deionised water and ethanol. The experiments were performed under near atmospheric pressure (0.94 bar to 1.2 bar absolute). The inlet temperature was kept constant at 20°C. The measurements were taken for three mass fluxes (120; 150; 185 kg/m2s) at heat fluxes from 7 to 375 kW/m2. Heat transfer coefficients are presented for single phase forced convection, subcooled and saturated flow boiling conditions. The heat transfer coefficient increases slightly with rising heat flux for single phase flow. A strong increase is observed in subcooled flow boiling. At high heat flux the heat transfer coefficient decreases slightly with increasing heat flux. The application of ethanol instead of water leads to an increase of the surface temperature. At the same low heat flux flow boiling heat transfer occurs with ethanol, but in the experiments with water single phase heat transfer is still dominant. It is because of the lower specific heat capacity of ethanol compared to water. There is a slight influence of the mass flux in the investigated parameter range. The pictures of a high-speed video-camera are analysed for the two-phase flow-pattern identification.

Submerged jet impingement boiling has the potential to enhance pool boiling heat transfer rates. In most practical situations, the surface could consist of multiple heat sources that dissipate heat at different rates resulting in a surface heat flux that is non-uniform. This paper discusses the effect of submerged jet impingement on the wall temperature characteristics and heat transfer for a non-uniform heat flux. A mini-jet is caused to impinge on a polished silicon surface from a nozzle having an inner diameter of 1.16 mm. A 25.4 mm diameter thin-film circular serpentine heater, deposited on the bottom of the silicon wafer, is used to heat the surface. Deionized degassed water is used as the working fluid and the jet and pool are subcooled by 20°C. Voltage drop between sensors leads drawn from the serpentine heater are used to identify boiling events. Heater surface temperatures are determined using infrared thermography. High-speed movies of the boiling front are recorded and used to interpret the surface temperature contours. Local heat transfer coefficients indicate significant enhancement upto radial locations of 2.6 jet diameters for a Reynolds number of 2580 and upto 6 jet diameters for a Reynolds number of 5161.

This paper reports the results of an investigation into the thermal loading of a modern 1·975 1, four-cylinder petrol engine operating at engine speeds of up to 100 rev/s. The effects of engine speed and load, mixture strength, ignition advance, compression ratio, coolant temperature and pressure, antifreeze, detonation, olefin content of fuel, and a piston modification on the local heat fluxes and metal temperatures have been determined and the maximum levels established. The methods of temperature measurement were fixed and traversing thermocouples for the cylinder head and liner, fixed thermocouples for the valve seats and spark plug, disappearing-filament optimal pyrometer and hardness recovery for the exhaust valve, differential thermocouples for the gross heat losses, and intermittent-contact fixed thermocouples for the piston. The greatest heat fluxes occurred at the centre of the combustion chamber, in the valve bridge and exhaust-valve seat region, and decreased towards the outside of the combustion chamber and down the cylinder liner. For the form of combustion chamber investigated the heat flux varied as the 0·6 power of the gross fuel consumption and the operating variables generally gave only second-order effects. The piston temperature is fairly sensitive to ignition advance, compression ratio, and high-speed detonation.

Steady-state port-flow simulations with static valve lift are often utilized to optimize the performance of intake system of an internal combustion engine. Generally, increase in valve lift results in higher mass flow rate through the valve. But in certain cases, mass flow rate can actually decrease with increased valve lift, caused by separation of turbulent flow at the valve-seat. Prediction of this phenomenon using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models is not trivial. It is found that the computational mesh significantly influences the simulation results. A series of steady-state port flow simulation are carried out using a commercial CFD code. Several mesh topologies are applied for the simulations. The predicted results are compared with available experimental data from flow bench measurements. It is found that the flow separation and reduction in mass flow rate with increased valve lift can be predicted when high mesh density is used in the proximity of the valve seat and the walls of the intake port. Higher mesh density also gives better predictions of mass flow rate compared to the experiments, but only for high valve lifts. For low valve lifts, the error in predicted flow rate is close to 13%.
