Abstract As the capital city of the Central Java Province, Semarang has a very unique regional profile. Economic activity in Semarang has accelerated rapidly and many industrial estates have been established, but the latent problem of inundation and subsidence has been a threat in the northern region of the city for almost a century. Under these conditions, the burden of pollution as a by-product of various activities in the coastal and upland areas becomes a threat magnification for ecological sustainability of coastal waters and surrounding areas. This review will reveal the ecological vulnerability of coastal waters based on biogeochemical aspects. The major references for the review were several research papers dan repots based on the research activities of The Research Centre for Oceanography, Indonesian Science Institute (LIPI) in Semarang coastal water on the last decade. Geological studies, heavy metal contamination and retrospection study using benthic foraminifera as proxies based on two core samples are the major aspects on the review. The results show that the eastern coastal of Semarang was more susceptible to ecological disasters such as accretion, pollution of several metals and total suspended solids compared to the western coastal waters. Retrospective study based on core sample showed that Pb and Zn contaminations were occurred higher at the East Flood Canal estuary since 1910, so was the imprint of hypoxia was found since 1939.

Over the past two decades, the coastal waters of Jinhae Bay have been extensively used by coastal communities and industries for the disposal of domestic and various industrial wastes, therefore increasing the level of pollutants in coastal waters with a subsequent increase in sediments, especially of heavy metals. Specific objectives of this research are to investigate the distribution of heavy metal concentration in biota, to compare the concentrations with those in sediment and water and to relate the bioconcentration to the different heavy metals in biota obtained from several sites. Sixty one percent of heavy metals was found in particulate form during the high runoff season and 32% during the dry season. The behavior of the particulate metals after flowing in to the enclosed coastal sea is an important factor in heavy metal contamination. Copper, lead and chromium contamination of sediment was revealed at several sites. The bioconcentration factors (BCFs) of zinc, cadmium, copper, nickel, chromium and lead by the mussel (Mytilus edulis) were determined as 2,900, 2,814, 807, 423, 228 and 127 in the decreasing order, respectively. The areas located nearest to highly populated city and industries exhibited mussels with the largest accumulation of copper, lead and chromium.

Research Centre Rez in the Czech Republic has carried out a number of research and development activities on the nuclear technology of the fusion reactor International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER). These contributions have led to the development of numerous experimental facilities. The initial experimental research related to ITER was focused on the technology of the LiPb eutectic alloy, and a production unit and technological channel were constructed. At a later time, material tests were performed in the neutron field of the LVR-15 research nuclear reactor. Interactions of EUROFER 97 and the LiPb eutectic alloy were examined in in-pile and out-pile tests, and the technology of the LiPb was developed. First wall mock-ups were in-pile and out-pile tested under high heat flux (HHF) cycle loads. At present, a full-size mock-up of the ITER Test Blanket System (TBS) and an HHF testing complex are constructed. This paper provides an overview of the research activities and experimental facilities.

The estimation of the hydrodynamics characteristics of the small ships rudders is an important issue in the initial design process. The manoeuvring performance depends on the type and geometry of the rudder. The control forces and moments generated by the rudder deflection can be calculated on the basis of the hydrodynamics characteristics of the rudder. A short description of the Mordvinov theoretical model is presented in this paper, in order to determine the hydrodynamics characteristics of a small ship rudder, with the propeller and hull influences. On the basis of the control forces and moments, the optimum position of the rudder stock and the selection of the steering gear can be performed. Using the Mordvinov method, the computer code PHP NM-MAN-HC was develop at the Research Centre of the Naval Architecture Faculty of “Dunarea de Jos” University of Galati. This computer code is integrated in the software platform PHP (Preliminary Hydrodynamics Performance) and is used for didactic applications and practical research activities in the small ship design process

Semarang, the capital city of Central Java Province, is one of the endemic areas in Indonesia with increasing case fatality rate in the last three years. Accordingly, the educational intervention is fundamentally requested. The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of health education intervention on  the community knowledge improvement and its implication for reducing the rat populations. The study was performed using field experiment with pretest and post test designs. A total of 55 cadres and housewives joining on the various education program at Sumurboto Village, Banyumanik Sub district, Semarang was used as research subjects. The health education interventions introduced in the study were counselling and mentoring. ,Data were analyzed using paired t-test. The results revealed that the knowledge of the subject research significantly increased and the rat populations significantly decreased after being given the educational intervention. The rat species identified in Sumurboto Village were Rattus norvegicus, R. tanezumi, R. exulans and Suncus murinus. The knowledge score before and after the intervention was 80.87 and 88.83 respectively. Meanwhile, the rat populations measured by trap success method reduced from 8% to 6% after the intervention. Nevertheless, the rat population in Sumurboto Village is considerably relative high indicating that the village possessed a high risk on leptospirosis attack. It is strongly suggested that the health education intervention in the community should be regularly maintained in order to accelerate the knowledge of leptospirosis and reduce the rat populations.

Abstract Zika virus (ZIKV) has caused an unprecedented epidemic linked to severe congenital syndromes. Transmission of ZIKV in the Americas was first confirmed in May 2015 in northeast Brazil, though the virus was likely introduced 1–2 years prior to its detection. Manaus, the capital city of the Amazonas State, the largest territory of any state in Brazil and the main economic center in the northern region, reported between 2016 and 2017 more than 2,327 suspected cases of ZIKV infection. To gain insights into the timing, source, and likely route(s) of ZIKV introduction in the Amazonas State, we tracked the virus by sequencing ZIKV genomes from infected patients. Using nanopore sequencing technology, we generated 56 Brazilian ZIKV genomes from Manaus city in the Amazonas state, sampled from human cases. On the basis of available sequences of isolates from the Americas, the Manaus sequences, we analyzed fell within a single strongly supported monophyletic clade (bootstrap support = 99%, posterior support = 1.00) that belongs to the Asian genotype. Genetic analysis suggests the outbreak most likely originated from transmission cycles not previously identified in North Brazil and not from a separate introduction into the Americas. Molecular dating analysis indicates that the outbreak was caused by a single founder strain that is estimated to have arrived in Manaus around February 2015. By analyzing surveillance and genetic data, we discovered that ZIKV moved among transmission zones in Manaus. Geographical analysis further indicates that the Northern part of the Manaus regions has a high transmission potential for ZIKV. Our work illustrates that near-real time genomics in the field can augment traditional approaches to infectious disease surveillance and control. Estimated dates for the international spread of ZIKV from the north region indicate the persistence of the virus transmission in recipient regions. Our study provides an understanding of how ZIKV initiates transmission in new regions.

Due to an increasing use of composite materials in various applications and related open questions concerning structural health monitoring and damage detection, the realisation of function integrating lightweight structures with sensory properties is subject of numerous research activities. Main objective is the transfer of already in laboratory and prototype scale established methods for the integration of sensory elements on serial applications. Here, combining the previously separated processing steps sensor manufacturing, component manufacturing and sensor integration can help to make a significant step forwards. Therefore, as part of the activities in the Collaborative Research Centre/Transregio (CRC/TR) 39, a highly productive spray coat method based on the long fibre injection (LFI) process is developed, which allows the process-integrated manufacturing and embedding of novel piezoelectric sensor modules into fibre-reinforced polyurethane composite structures.Based on studies on the technological implementation of the newly developed process, theoretical and experimental studies for contacting and polarisation of the novel sensor elements are presented. In addition, the characterisation of the adhesion properties of thermoplastic films on the used fibre-reinforced polyurethane composites is part of the presented research to evaluate the possibility of integrating thermoplastic-compatible piezo modules for actuator applications.

Monitoring and assessment of heavy metal concentrations in shallot fields are needed to evaluate the potential risk of contamination due to heavy metals. This study aims to define the status of heavy metal contamination in shallot fields using contamination indices. A total of 184 soil samples (0-20 cm) were taken from shallot fields in Brebes Regency, Central Java. The soil samples were analyzed for the concentration of five heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Ni, Cr, and Co) with HNO3 and HClO4 extracts and measured using AAS. Assessment of the status of heavy metals contamination in the soil using contaminant factor (CF), geo-accumulation index (I-geo), and pollution load index (PLI). The mean concentration in shallot fields showed the following order Cr > Ni > Pb > Co > Cd and the concentration were still below critical limit values. Four metals are Pb, Cr, Co, and Ni are low contamination (CF<1), while Cd is considerable until very high contamination factor. Based on I-geo values, shallot fields are practically uncontaminated of Pb, Co, Ni, and Cr (I-geo<1), meanwhile the status of Cd is uncontaminated to moderately contaminated (0<I-geo<1). Generally, the shallot fields in Brebes Regency, Central Java is unpolluted with five metals (PLI<1).
