Abstract Rams exhibit varying levels of sensitivity to phenylthiocarbamide (PTC), which has been correlated with the ability to perceive bitter-tasting foods. Previously, the only procedure for measuring PTC-sensitivity in rams involved a 9-d test phase with 5 PTC concentrations. The objective of this experiment was to develop a more streamlined approach for identifying and classifying rams on extreme ends of the bitter-tasting spectrum. Mature Targhee, Rambouillet, Polypay, and Composite-breed rams (n = 44), housed in three separate barns, and subjected to 4-d acclimation, 2-d sham, and 2-d testing phases. The 2-d sham phase was conducted to determine if ethanol-spiked water (delivery vehicle for PTC) influenced voluntary fluid intake; no effect (P = 0.16) was observed. The 2-d test phase was a side-by-side preference study between water (control; 3.0 kg) and 1 of 2 concentrations (0.2 and 2.0 mM) of PTC solution (3.0 kg) delivered on alternate days. Average consumption of PTC as a percentage of total test fluid intake was used determine taster status. No PTC-treatment effect (P ≥ 0.23) was observed, but within each treatment level, PTC intake was less (P < 0.001) than water intake. Classification levels of PTC consumption were determined by ± 1.0 standard deviation of the mean and used to classify rams into non- (n = 9; 61.5 ± 3.9%), intermediate- (n = 29; 40.7 ± 1.8%), or super- (n = 6; 15.6 ± 3.3%) PTC tasting groups, which were different (P < 0.001) from each other. Likewise, water consumption intakes were different (P< 0.001) between the non- (38.5 ± 3.9%), intermediate- (59.3 ± 1.8%), and super- (84.4 ± 3.3%) PTC tasting groups. The methods outlined in this study will facilitate further research focused on the influence of bitter tasting sensitivities on the dietary preferences of sheep.

Object. The authors reviewed and analyzed information on 74 patients with split spinal cord malformations (SSCMs) treated between January 1, 1980 and December 31, 1996 at their institution with the aim of defining and classifying the malformations according to the method of Pang, et al. Methods. Computerized tomography myelography was superior to other radiological tools in defining the type of SSCM. There were 46 girls (62%) and 28 boys (38%) ranging in age from less than 1 day to 12 years (mean 33.08 months). The mean age (43.2 months) of the patients who exhibited neurological deficits and orthopedic deformities was significantly older than those (8.2 months) without deficits (p = 0.003). Fifty-two patients had a single Type I and 18 patients a single Type II SSCM; four patients had composite SSCMs. Sixty-two patients had at least one associated spinal lesion that could lead to spinal cord tethering. After surgery, the majority of the patients remained stable and clinical improvement was observed in 18 patients. Conclusions. The classification of SSCMs proposed by Pang, et al., will eliminate the current chaos in terminology. In all SSCMs, either a rigid or a fibrous septum was found to transfix the spinal cord. There was at least one unrelated lesion that caused tethering of the spinal cord in 85% of the patients. The risk of neurological deficits resulting from SSCMs increases with the age of the patient; therefore, all patients should be surgically treated when diagnosed, especially before the development of orthopedic and neurological manifestations.

All the patients are aged from 1 to 16 years with undescended testis underwent laparoscopic surgery for diagnosis and treatment in Deparment of pediatric surgery – Viet Duc hospital enrolled. Results: Of 95 patiens in total had 106 undescended testis diagnosed and treated by laparoscopy. The mean age of patients was 7,5 ± 3,8 years. 44,2% undescended were on the left side, 44,2% were on the right and 11,6% were undescended bilateral. The correct diagnosis by ultrasound accounted in 79,4%. The locations of testis diagnosed by laparoscopic are : intra abdomen in 45,3%, deep inguinal orifice in 16,9%, extra inguinal orifice in 26,4%, no testicle found in 11,4%. The mean time of operation were 67,33± 28,01 pht. Scrotal positions were achieved 74,5%, remove atrophic testis accounted in 7,6%. Stephen- Flowler technique including step I were in 4,7%, step II in 1,9%. The outcome evaluated by testicular positions following 3 months after operation are : good in 79,2%, moderate 13,2%, poor in 7,6%; By classification of Aubert are : good in 81,1%, moderate in 11,3% and poor in 7,6 %. Conclusion: Laparoscopic surgery is not only a highly sensitive diagnostic method to find accurately the location and size of the testes, but also the most effective method to treat impalpable undescended testes.

The article aims to develop a model for forecasting the characteristics of traffic flows in real-time based on the classification of applications using machine learning methods to ensure the quality of service. It is shown that the model can forecast the mean rate and frequency of packet arrival for the entire flow of each class separately. The prediction is based on information about the previous flows of this class and the first 15 packets of the active flow. Thus, the Random Forest Regression method reduces the prediction error by approximately 1.5 times compared to the standard mean estimate for transmitted packets issued at the switch interface.

Hydration practices may confound heart rate variability (HRV) measurements when collected in the pre-training period. We aimed to determine the effects of ingesting a hypertonic, sugar-sweetened sports beverage on HRV and hemodynamic parameters in physically active young men. Fifteen subjects consumed 591 ml of Gatorade (6% carbohydrate, ~330 mOsmol/kg), 591 ml water, or 10 ml water (control) in random order on separate days following overnight fasting. HRV and hemodynamics were evaluated in 5-min windows immediately before (T1) and 5-10 min (T2), 25-30 min (T3), 40-45 min (T4), and 55-60 min (T5) post-drinking. Root-mean square of successive differences and the standard deviation of normal RR intervals increased post-water intake at all time-points relative to T1 (P <0.05). No increases were observed post-Gatorade intake, though small effect sizes (ES) were noted at T2 and T3 (P >0.05, ES = 0.27 - 0.32). Systemic vascular resistance increased at T2 post-Gatorade intake and at T2 and T3 post-water intake (P <0.05). No interactions were observed for blood pressure measures, stroke volume, or cardiac output. Gatorade does not evoke cardiovascular adjustments to the same magnitude as water. Practitioners should wait at least 45 min to record HRV post-Gatorade intake and >60 min post-water intake. Key Findings: ● Equal volumes of cold water and Gatorade produce inequivalent cardiac-autonomic and hemodynamic responses. ● HRV responses of greater amplitude and duration were observed following intake of water versus Gatorade. ● Failure to account for recent fluid intake may result in misinterpretation of autonomic status.

This study aims to perform a multiscale analysis of abraded surfaces of 316L austenitic stainless steel and titanium alloys (TiAl6V4) grinded at different paper grades. The authors propose to answer the following question: For a given distribution of silicon carbide grains of the paper, what is the best roughness parameter and at which scale must it be evaluated better to discriminate the effect of the mechanical properties of the materials? Paper grades from 80 to 4000 were used under identical pressure and erosion time. It can be concluded that the values of the amplitude roughness parameters depend on the observation scale. It is outlined that the abrasion process is very reproducible. A statistical analysis is then proposed, first, to define a classification of the relevance of the roughness parameters for each grain size distribution, and second, to determine at which scale the mechanical properties of the bulk are more influenced for all paper grades. Finally, at relevant scales, the Abbott amplitude parameters roughness kernel (RK) is the best parameter to discriminate the paper grade effect. The mean distance between asperities (SM) is the preferred method for determining the wear effect on materials and the linear mean normalizing autocorrelation (AMNLN) is the preferred method for determining the interaction between paper grade and materials.

Aims To identify the frequency of reports of sporadic schwannomatosis, the types of patients affected, and the nerves affected. Patients and Methods We identified all case reports and case series that reported on patients with sporadic schwannomatosis according to established criteria. Results The initial search yielded 1,597 studies, of which 15 were included. A total of 38 of 55 individuals met the inclusion criteria. The mean age of the patients was 48 years; 41% were male. Thirty-three patients had peripheral nerve tumors, and 17 had spinal tumors. Twelve had tumors in both locations. Tumor distribution was unilateral in 25 of 30 cases (83.3%) and segmental (limited to one limb or five or fewer contiguous segments of the spine) in 28 of 38 cases (73.7%). Conclusion This systematic review quantified the number of individuals who meet the criteria for sporadic schwannomatosis and better described this population to facilitate the classification of neurofibromatosis in regard to the 2005 consensus statement. Unilateral or segmental distribution of nerve tumors are key aspects when dealing with multiple noncutaneous schwannomas without involvement of the vestibular nerve.

To imitate resonances that might occur in the fuel delivery system of gas turbine combustors, the incoming liquid streams of two pressure swirl nozzles were perturbed using a piezoelectric driver. Frequencies of perturbations examined were from 3 to 20 kHz, and water was used as the test fluid. A video camera and a Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer (PDPA) were used to study the effect of perturbations on the mean flow quantities of the sprays. Various lighting arrangements were used for the video photography: back lighting, front lighting, a strobe synchronized with the input to the piezoelectric, and a laser sheet oriented along the midplane of the sprays. The study showed that the piezoelectric drive had an effect an the spray system at discrete frequencies. At these particular frequencies, by increasing the input voltage, it was found that the piezoelectric drive affected the atomization in the following ways: (1) the mean flow rate decreased, (2) the spray cone angle decreased, (3) the break up length decreased, (4) the peak of the spatial distribution of the mean droplet size decreased, and (5) the mean droplet sizes and velocities increased near the spray center line and decreased in the outer region of the spray. A hysteresis effect of the drive frequency on the spray cone angle was observed. The results indicated that more fundamental research is needed to gain an in-depth understanding of the physical processes induced in the spray by the piezoelectric drive.

Artificial Sweeteners (AS) are synthetic sugar substitutes that have sweetening potency hundreds of times more than the table sugar (sucrose). Artificial sweeteners are regarded as attractive alternatives to sugar as they add no calories to food intake. There are many hypotheses suggesting that AS may enhance appetite and cause weight gain. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of AS on food intake, fluid intake and body weight of mice. Acceptable daily intakes of AS solutions were administered orally to different set of mice for four weeks. The body weight, food consumption and fluid intake were measured. At the same time, the effect of Zingiber officinale extracts (natural appetite suppressor), Thymus vulgaris extracts (natural appetite inducer) and cyproheptadine (an appetite stimulant drug) on body weight of mice was evaluated. Artificial sweeteners consumption cause insignificant changes in body weight (p>0.05). However, the mean consumption of food and solutions varies significantly for some groups. The consumption of AS has no significant effect on body weight and may contribute to weight maintenance and energy balance as substitutes to high caloric sugar

Abstract BackgroundNot much is known about the results of the severity classification according to the time of visit to the emergency department and the appropriateness of using a public ambulance when visiting the emergency department.MethodsThis descriptive research study retrospectively reviewed and analyzed the medical records of patients who visited the emergency department of the B general hospital in Seoul from January to December 2019.ResultsA total of 54,297 patients were included in the analysis. Of the total, 34,629 (63.8%) patients visited directly while 14,065 (25.9%) visited through public ambulances, and 10,328 (73.4%) of patients using public ambulances were discharged home. The numbers of daytime and nighttime patients were 24,891 (45.8%) and 29,406 (54.2%), respectively. The mean length of emergency department stay (LoS) of patients classified as emergency was 326 minutes, while that of non-emergency patients was 159 minutes. In addition, the mean LoS of patients classified as Korean triage and acuity scale levels 1 and 2 was 427 min and 430 min, respectively, which was longer than the total of 236 minutes.ConclusionWe confirmed that patients who visited the emergency department using public ambulances accounted for about 25% of all emergency department visits, and of which 70% were discharged home. In addition, patients with high severity showed a longer mean LoS, and daytime showed higher severity and more patients than nighttime.
