Abstract The aim of the research was to study the specific features of morphometric parameters in rooster and guinea fowl spermatozoa. Thirty ejaculate samples from each species were investigated. A macroscopic assessment of the ejaculates obtained was carried out by volume, color and consistency. Microscopic parameters were studied using computerized sperm quality analysis systems. Diff-Quick set was used for staining sperm. Visualization of fixed preparations was performed using a Nikon Eclipse Ni-U microscope and a Nikon DS-Qi2 camera. Measurement of morphometric parameters was carried out in the program NIS-Elements BR 4.30. Evaluation of sperm morphometry was carried out according to the following indicators: total length of spermatozoa, length of head and tail, perimeter and area, head shape in indexes of ellipticity and elongation. The SPSS v.15.0 package was used for statistical analysis. To assess the statistical differences in the distributions of spermatozoa, the χ2-test was used. ANOVA was conducted to determine the effect of species. Roosters surpassed guinea fowls in ejaculate volume by 83.3% (P < 0.001). Statistically significant differences were not established for sperm activity between species. The content of motile spermatozoa in the roosters ejaculate was 92.4 ± 5.3%, in guinea fowls - 88.7 ± 6.54%. The results of the morphometric parameters analysis showed that they have a specific feature. The total length of rooster spermatozoa was 90 ± 2.6 μm, which is 8 μm more than that in guinea fowl (P < 0.05). The length of the sperm head in roosters was 2 μm longer than that in guinea fowls (P < 0.05). The interspecific difference across the perimeters and width of the head was not statistically significant. Rooster ejaculates differed relative homogeneity compared to guinea fowl. The study results showed that morphometric parameters of poultry sperm have a specific feature. Supported by the RSF (16-16-04104).

Objective - to reveal the pattern of changes in the morphometric parameters of the basilar artery when the geometric configuration of its course alters with the formation of an acute angle, spiral or loop. Material and methods. We studied 16 non-fixed human brain specimens. Anatomy of the basilar artery was studied by methods of macro- and micro-preparation, angiomorphometry was carried out with subsequent processing of the results of the study. Results. During angiomorphometry of 16 basilar arteries, normal straight course of the vessel was detected in 68,75 % of the cases. The value of the elastic properties index was 0,33±0,01. In 31,25 % of cases, a change in the geometric configuration of the course of the basilar artery was revealed. The basilar artery kinking was formed in 40 % and coiling - in 60 % of the total number of all cases with abnormal vessel course. The value of the elastic properties index was 0,34±0,01, which is not significantly different from the average values for muscle-type arteries. The study of the length, wall thickness, outer diameter and lumen diameter of the vessels showed a significant excess of these parameters in comparison with the vessels with normal linear course. Conclusions. The data obtained during the study indicate an increase in the outer diameter of the basilar artery, as well as an increase in the thickness of the vascular wall and the inner lumen in the case of kinking or coiling.

SummarySperm morphometry can be applied to identify different animal groups and species and to evaluate sperm quality. Furthermore, knowledge on species-specific differences will help to enhance biological information, as well as to develop efficient reproductive technologies. The aims in the present study were to describe sperm morphometry from the recently characterized species S. collinsi and S. vanzolinii, to verify if the morphometric sperm patterns are similar or different between both species, and to determine if the sperm morphometry is affected by the levels of sperm defects using the S. collinsi as a model. Semen was collected from S. collinsi (n = 10) and S. vanzolinii (n = 2) monkeys, and sperm was submitted to morphological analysis. From the 10 samples from S. collinsi, five presented sperm of poor quality and two subgroups were formed for this species, i.e. high and poor quality sperm. Data on sperm motility and vigour were analysed, as well morphometric parameters on sperm head and tail. It was observed the normal morphometry was correlated with high quality sperm. Poor quality sperm presented smaller and 7% more ellipticity in their head, when compared with high quality sperm. Sperm from S. vanzolinii presented larger head than those from S. collinsi, but tail lengths were similar. Sperm morphometry can be used as a complementary tool to predict sperm motility and vigour for the S. collinsi species, and S. collinsi appear as a suitable model for S. vanzolinii.

The relative growth and population structure of the terebellid Nicolea uspiana were investigated in the intertidal zone of a rocky shore on the south-east coast of Brazil, from May 2006 to May 2007. Eight hundred and forty-seven individuals of N. uspiana were analysed: 391 males, 163 females, and 293 immatures. Although significant differences in some morphometric parameters were found, there was no sexual dimorphism between males and females. There were differences in total length, width of segment 5, and length of the notopodial region between matures and immatures. The negative allometry of the total length in relation to five other parameters showed that this feature is a good measure for estimating the individual size, which was then used in the analysis of population structure. This population of N. uspiana showed a bimodal size–frequency distribution, with immature and mature individuals found during the entire year. This pattern indicates continuous reproduction, with each cohort growing for at least three to four months and being responsible for two consecutive settlement peaks.

High resolution (10 m and 20 m) optical imagery satellite Sentinel-2 brings a new perspective to Earth observation. Its frequent revisit time enables monitoring the Earth surface with high reliability. Since Sentinel-2 data is provided free of charge by the European Space Agency, its mass use for variety of purposes is expected. Quality evaluation of Sentinel-2 data is thus necessary. Quality analysis in this experiment is based on comparison of Sentinel-2 imagery with reference data (orthophoto). From the possible set of features to compare (point features, texture lines, objects, etc.) line segments were chosen because visual analysis suggested that scale differences matter least for these features. The experiment was thus designed to compare long line segments (e.g. airstrips, roads, etc.) in both datasets as the most representative entities. Edge detection was applied to both images and corresponding edges were manually selected. The statistical parameter which describes the geometrical relation between different images (and between datasets in general) covering the same area is calculated as the distance between corresponding curves in two datasets. The experiment was conducted for two different test sites, Austria and Serbia. From 21 lines with a total length of ca. 120 km the average offset of 6.031 m (0.60 pixel of Sentinel-2) was obtained for Austria, whereas for Serbia the average offset of 12.720 m (1.27 pixel of Sentinel-2) was obtained out of 10 lines with a total length of ca. 38 km.

Registries are indispensable in medical studies and provide the basis for reliable study results for research questions. Depending on the purpose of use, a high quality of data is a prerequisite. However, with increasing registry quality, costs also increase accordingly. Considering these time and cost factors, this work is an attempt to estimate the cost advantages of applying statistical tools to existing registry data, including quality evaluation. Results for quality analysis showed that there are unquestionable savings of millions in study costs by reducing the time horizon and saving on average € 523,126 for every reduced year. Replacing additionally the over 25 % missing data in some variables, data quality was immensely improved. To conclude, our findings showed dearly the importance of data quality and statistical input in avoiding biased conclusions due to incomplete data.

AbstractIn the belt of the Polish Uplands, including the Holy Cross Region, lakes occur sporadically. In some places, however, they are somewhat more abundant. They are usually objects with a small surface area. The majority of them have not been subject to thorough investigation. Therefore, the objective of the paper is the expansion of knowledge regarding these lakes. The paper among others presents the characteristics of several lakes with aeolian genesis located on the Przedbórz Upland in the catchment area of the Wierna River and in the Nida Basin near the towns of Busko-Zdrój and Pińczów. The study results determine the morphometric parameters of the lakes, also pointing to an exceptionally high variability of physical and chemical water properties, as well as the possibility of periodical disappearance of the lakes. Moreover, the study results provide a necessary and solid basis for further investigation of the lakes, which in the context of the observed increasingly serious water deficit and decrease in the level of surface waters and groundwaters is undoubtedly of high importance.
