This chapter is an in-depth exploration of communication between parents and teens. This foundation becomes important when difficult topics like depression, substance use, or family conflict need to be discussed. Communication strategies, including open-ended questioning, validation, empathy, and optimal timing, are detailed. The chapter illustrates why lecturing and immediate problem-solving are not helpful. Assertive communication within the family is discussed as well as cultural barriers to effective communication. The skills of motivational interviewing are applied to parent–child interactions about decisions. The family dinner is examined as an opportunity for shared communication and connection. Divorce is seen as a severe breakdown in communication, with 25–30% of children suffering negative effects. Arizona State University’s New Beginning Program for parents going through a divorce is presented as a proactive model that has reduced psychological problems in children and emerging adults.

You're at the family dinner table. Your spouse worries that a friend's business is struggling. Then your son complains about his math homework and your inability to help, and your daughter asks when she will see her friends again. As the meal progresses, you can feel everyone becoming more and more anxious. Emotions are contagious. We automatically mimic each other's facial expressions, body language, and tone of voice. Next, we actually feel the emotions we mimicked and begin to act on them. Without our realizing what's happening, feelings can escalate, as we “catch” them from other people, who catch them back from us, in an increasing spiral. While emotions spread more easily in person, they also get transmitted through social media, phone calls, emails, and video chats. In fact, negative emotions related to isolation may make us even more susceptible. Luckily, knowledge is a form of inoculation. Just being aware of emotional contagion can reduce its negative effects. And positive emotions transfer just as easily as negative ones. The spread of positive emotions leads to greater cooperation, less conflict, and improved performance.

Background: Experiencing the death of a close person, especially in emerging adults and students, can have profound effects on the bereaved individual’s life. As most research in this field has focused on negative effects of a loss, little is known about potential positive effects experienced by bereaved university students. This study investigated the experience of grief and personal growth in a sample of students from The University of Melbourne, Australia. Methods: Semi-structured interviews via Zoom/telephone with bereaved students (n = 14), who were invited to reflect on their loss and any personal growth potentially experienced. Thematic analysis of the data was based on a deductive and inductive approach. Results: The analysis identified four themes: (i) sharing of grief as a coping mechanism, (ii) balance between grief reactions and moving forward in life, (iii) lessons learned and personal growth, and (iv) adopting values from the deceased person and continuing bonds. Conclusions: Participants emphasized personal growth regarding self-perception and philosophical views on life. Following the loss, they preferred peer support, and used formal services only when they had a specific need. The findings indicate the importance of social support for bereaved students, and the complimentary role of peer and professional support. Hence, academic institutions should offer supportive services tailored to both students and professionals to help bereaved students.

Abstract Background Prostate cancer is often labelled a couple’s disease wherein the partner plays an important role in the man’s illness management and related health promotion activities. The aim of this study was to explore partner experiences of prostate cancer patients’ engagement with a community-based football program. Methods Eight audio-visual recorded semi-structured focus group interviews were conducted with a total of 39 female partners of men with prostate cancer who participated in a community-based football program as part of the nationwide FC Prostate Community Trial (NCT02430792). Data was managed with the software program Nvivo 11 and analysed inductively to derive thematic findings. Results The four thematic findings were: 1) ‘Hope of a new beginning’ which included stories of hope that football would mitigate the negative effects of men’s prostate cancer treatment [s]; 2) ‘My new partner’ was characterized by attributing connections between physical activity and elevated mood as a by-product of men’s involvement in the program; 3) ‘Football first’ included assertions of the couples mutual commitment to the football program; and 4) ‘Invisible needs’ contrasted insecurity, and unforeseen challenges for partners feeling somewhat neglected. Overall, the results confirm the need for cohesion and flexibility amongst couple-dyads to ensure partners and men with prostate cancer benefit from their involvement in football programs. Conclusions This study indicates that partners of prostate cancer survivors’ engaging with community-based football align to idealized gender relations, roles and identities. In many instances, these gendered dimensions aided positive dyadic coping and long-term exercise adherence.

Whenever a behavioral or psychosocial problem presents in a child, all members of the family are affected. Conversely, when the problem lies within the family, the child is affected and often presents as the symptomatic patient. The goals of family-focused pediatrics are to: 1) determine the need for a family intervention; 2) conduct a family interview-assessment; 3) clarify the issues; 4) teach healthy communication skills and interactions; and 5) facilitate generation of family goals and solutions. Family-focused strategies provide an effective, brief, and timely approach that can aid the pediatrician in helping children and their families function in more healthy and satisfying ways.

This study aimed to examine an integrated model of the mediation role of need satisfaction and frustration in the association between the sibling relationship and interpersonal competence and social anxiety in young adults and their siblings. In a sample of 1621 pairs of siblings with a range age between 16 and 30 years old, the actor-partner interdependence mediation model showed that (a) a positive sibling relationship promotes need satisfaction, while a negative relationship promotes need frustration; (b) need satisfaction to promote interpersonal competence, while need frustration promote social anxiety; and (c) a mediation role of basic need in the association between sibling relationship and social anxiety and interpersonal competence. The need satisfaction perceived by the older siblings is negatively related to social anxiety and positively related to the interpersonal competence of younger siblings. These results showed the importance of focusing on sibling dynamics in the family context using a SDT approach.

Abstract The problem of drug addiction for individuals, especially young people, is one of the most dangerous pests that cause many problems in various health, social and psychological aspects facing every society, but rather the whole world. The phenomenon of drug addiction often leaves individuals with dangerous negative effects on their behavior, whether towards themselves or towards others, and this requires the relevant institutions to strive for important and constructive solutions to reform such individuals, and then rid them of their negative behaviors, rehabilitate them and integrate them into society, to become active and effective individuals through their adoption of positive behaviors that are acceptable in line with the values, customs and traditions of their societies to which they belong. Therefore, our current study came to shed light on the most important effects resulting from the phenomenon of drug addiction among individuals through achieving the two research objectives which seek to know: 1- Causes of addiction to drug use among individuals 2- The effect of drug abuse on society. Upon verifying the two research objectives by relying on the analytical method of literature and previous studies, the two researchers reached the following results: First - The most important causes of youth addiction to drugs are poverty, begging, loss of one or both parents, the presence of a criminal in his family, invalid education and other various phenomena and deviations. Second - The symptoms of drug addiction push the addicted person to adopt deviant behaviors, as well as afflicting the addicted individual to psychological and mental pressures, and then afflicting his family with chronic diseases, in addition to the family breakdown occurring in the homes of drug addicts. The street child that is driven by circumstances to live outside the supportive structure of the family, is on his own. He doesn’t have the educational developmental opportunities that children who grow up in families and societies do. He finds himself in a unique educational and living environment. From an educational psychologist’s point of view, this environment is abnormal. It is therefore a great challenge for the educational psychologist to try and avoid or resolve negative effects of the child's living environment. An exploratory-, descriptive-, contextual- and qualitative study was done, with the aim of gaining insight and understanding into the life of the street child in Hillbrow as well as his experiences of his situation. The results obtained from the interviews were placed in four categories. These categories are: The street child’s continuous struggle to survive, his need for a “normal child life” , his inability to accept responsibility and the presence of a normative awareness within the street child. In conclusion it is clear that the experiential world of the street child is multi-facetted. In general it appears that the street child has many limitations and difficulties which he experiences, and that input by an educational psychologist can have meaningful influence in his life.
