Abstract Primary oral cavity lymphomas (POCV) are uncommon and must be distinguish from widespread involvement of systemic lymphomas. Countries with high incidence of oral malignancies report cancer predominance. HIV+ population have higher prevalence than immunocompetent patientes. Alcohol and tobacco have been mentioned like risk factors. The International Prognostic Index has been taken in consideration. Patients attended Hospital on referal from medical or odontology centers and others on their own. A total of 29 patientes were studied. Aged 21 to 70, media 47,3 years. Male predominance: 69%. Histopathology: NHL high grade B: 19 cases, NHL low grade B: 4, NHL high grade T: 3 and plasmoblastic 3. Sites: superior maxilla: 12, inferior maxilla 11, tongue 3, palate 3. No predominance for right or left locations. HIV+ 9 patients (31%) The prevalence among inmmunocompetent was markedly lower: in 662 diagnosed with NHL 20 cases=3,02%, in 32 NHL HIV+ 9 cases= 28,12%. More frequent complaints were: painless swell of the maxilla, movable teeth, dysphagia, facial edema. The stages were I and II, 28% with locoregional extension: adenopathies or bone infiltration. The IPI was 0 in17, 1 in 10 and 2 in 2 patients. All patients received chemotherapy (CVP, CHOP), with initial good response and early relapse in HIV+. Conclusions: In correspondence with others reports, we found predominance in male and middle age, B cell lineage and connection with HIV infection. POCL may lead to the diagnosis of an up to then unknown HIV infection. The little specificity of the initial symptons tends to delay the diagnosis and the referal to a specialized center. IPI didn’t prove useful as a prognostic assessment.

Background: Oral problems are frequent in palliative care and can cause disabling symptoms such as orofacial pain, dysgeusia, and xerostomia. Even if oral care is an essential aspect of nursing, it is often not considered as a priority, especially when various complex patients’ needs have to be managed. Objective: The aim of this study was to describe oral conditions and evaluate the impact of standard oral care on symptom control and patient’s perceived comfort in a sample of terminally ill patients. Method: A prospective cohort study was carried out among 415 patients who were admitted to hospice. Patients were recruited before undergoing standard assisted procedure for oral hygiene care. Oral cavity condition, symptoms, and comfort were assessed at the recruitment (T0) and after 3 days (T2). Results: Seventy-five eligible patients were recruited. The Oral Assessment Guide score was significantly decreased after oral standard care ( P value <.0001). The average time spent by nursing staff for oral hygiene care was 5.3 minutes. Dysgeusia and xerostomia were significantly decreased after oral standard care ( P = .02 and P = .03). Patients reported a high level of comfort (86.6%) after the procedures for oral hygiene care. Conclusion: Patients admitted to hospice had frequent alterations in oral cavity with partial loss of its functions that can compromise their quality of life. Standard procedures for oral hygiene care are simple and fast to perform, and they may improve oral cavity conditions, symptoms control, and patients’ comfort.

Background: The rampant spread of SARS-CoV-2 worldwide increases the likelihood that dental health care professionals will treat this subset of the patient population. Due to the characteristics of the profession and the virus, two situations deserve attention: the disinfection of surfaces that can be contaminated during dental treatment and the presence of the virus in the oral cavity and the countless possibilities of microbial interaction with microorganisms in the oral cavity. Objective: The objective of this review was to point out, the current stage of the discussion on dental biosafety involving professionals, the work team and patients. Methods: The following databases were consulted: MEDLINE (National Library of Medicine, USA - NLM), Lilacs, Scielo, Embase, Web of Science and Google Academic with the keywords COVID-19 and dental practice, dentistry, oral conditions, mouthrinses. Results: Disinfection of surfaces has always been paramount and the protocol to prevent the spread of SARS-CoV-2 seems to be established. SARS-CoV-2 is vulnerable to oxidation, it is recommended to use a mouth rinse containing oxidizing agents. Conclusions: Dentists are among the professionals who are most at risk of Covid-19 infection, and they must have extra attention during this period, biosafety measures must be reinforced and patients must be motivated to maintain a strict oral hygiene routine so that there is no accumulation of biofilm and this may somehow interfere with your systemic condition.

Green tea is a widely consumed beverage worldwide. Numerous studies have suggested about the beneficial effects of green tea on oral conditions such as dental caries, periodontal diseases and halitosis. However, to date there have not been many review articles published that focus on beneficial effects of green tea on oral disease. The aim of this publication is to summarize the research conducted on the effects of green tea on oral cavity. Green tea might help reduce the bacterial activity in the oral cavity that in turn, can reduce the aforementioned oral afflictions. Furthermore, the antioxidant effect of the tea may reduce the chances of oral cancer. However, more clinical data is required to ascertain the possible benefits of green tea consumption on oral health.

The success of complete dentures is highly dependent on the anatomy of the oral cavity. Several conditions can affect the final denture fit. Disorders of the soft tissues, such as denture hyperplasia, denture stomatitis and mucosal pathology may play a role. There are also difficulties related to the shape of the bone, including excessively large undercuts/bony exostoses, tori, enlarged tuberosities and flabby ridges and other factors, such as xerostomia to be considered. The aim of this article is to help diagnose these conditions and to suggest ways of overcoming the individual problems with which patients present before starting denture construction. CPD/Clinical Relevance: The diagnosis of several oral conditions and their appropriate management may help achieve an optimal outcome when constructing complete dentures.

Background: Menopause is the permanent cessation of menstrual cycles due to the loss of ovarian activity. This phase is characterized by physiological changes, mostly influenced by the decrease of estrogen and progesterone, as well as by the aging of tissues. These changes can involve oral cavity. Postmenopausal women are prone to changes in the oral cavity such as volume, salivary pH and oral conditions such as ulceration, bleeding gums, dry mouth and caries due to hormonal changes. Purpose: This study aimed to determine the differences in volume, salivary pH and oral conditions in menopausal women and non-menopausal women. Method: This study was using an analytic comparative method. The data obtained was secondary data from the results of the Unpad Lecturer Competency Research (RKDU) by taking a convenience sampling of 27 menopausal women and using simple random sampling of 27 non-menopausal women. The volume and salivary pH were analyzed using the non-parametric Mann-Whitney test and the data on the condition of the oral cavity were analyzed using the z-parametric test with a significance level of p<0.05. Results: The results showed that there were significant differences in salivary volume (p=0.0016), salivary pH (p=0.0191) and caries (p=0.0142), and there was no significant differences in ulceration conditions (p=0.5), bleeding gums (p=0.0806) and dry mouth (p= 0.2756) in menopausal women and non-menopausal women. Conclusion: There are differences in salivary volume, salivary pH and caries conditions, but there are no differences in ulceration, bleeding gums and dry mouth conditions in menopausal women and non-menopausal women.  Keywords: Menopausal women, Oral changes, Saliva pH, Saliva volume

Purpose Dental and occlusal anomalies are common in individuals with cleft lip and palate, placing them at risk for speech sound distortions. Speech-language pathologists and dental practitioners frequently interact when presented with clinical problems secondary to dental and occlusal anomalies. This is especially true when treating a child with a cleft lip and palate. The speech sound error types must be identified and their etiologies evaluated to develop appropriate management plans. The purpose of this review article is to describe the types of dental and occlusal anomalies that are common in individuals with cleft lip and/or palate and discuss the impact these anomalies have on articulation. Method A review of the literature was completed with a focus on prevalence, definitions, and descriptions of dental and occlusal anomalies in individuals with cleft lip and palate. The impact of dental/occlusal anomalies on speech production is described. Results and Conclusions There is sufficient evidence that dental and occlusal anomalies have an impact on articulation, but the relationship of dental or occlusal status is not always a direct one. The phonemes most affected by aberrant oral conditions are sibilants, though other phonemes may be impacted as well. These speech errors are considered to be obligatory oral distortions in that they are made in response to an oral structural defect. These speech errors are not typically amenable to speech therapy, but rather require orthodontic and/or surgical correction. Such treatment can be effective in improving these errors, often spontaneously, however, speech therapy may be necessary (and most effective) following correction of the dental and/or occlusal anomalies if errors persist.
