This chapter provides school-based practitioners with practical evidence-based guidelines for developing culturally relevant responses to support bereaved students of diverse cultures. The chapter highlights culturally competent approaches, explores key cultural considerations for assessing the significance of culture in the student’s life, helps school-based practitioners identify unique and important cultural values, beliefs, and practices, encourages cultural conversations, and facilitates healthy grieving through cultural understanding and appreciation. Culture is often a major determinant in how one perceives and navigates the world in circumstances of grief and loss. Therefore, it is of paramount importance for school-based practitioners to know how best to support culturally diverse bereaved students. The importance of the practitioner’s developing his or her own cultural awareness and cultural humility is emphasized.

Background: The U.S. population is becoming increasingly diverse; however, nursing remains a predominantly Caucasian profession. To promote positive outcomes among diverse patients, nurses must rely on rigorous transcultural research. When conducting research with people different from oneself, knowledge of one’s own values and beliefs is a necessary first step. In Transcultural Nursing Research, a required doctoral course, the first assignment is a reflexive exercise followed by online discussion about one’s personal culture and the origins of values and beliefs. Objectives: To (a) examine students’ responses to a reflexive exercise for evidence of cultural self-awareness, cultural humility, and insights gained and (b) assess the effectiveness of the teaching method. Methods: The setting was online within the Learning Management System (LMS), Blackboard. Participants: The sample consisted of twelve doctoral students enrolled in Transcultural Nursing Research. Methods: Student consent was obtained after course grades were submitted. Data was extracted from the LMS, de-identified, coded, categorized and collapsed into themes. Results: Four themes emerged from the data: “different versus familiar”, “cultural experiences”, “memories” and “reflections and implications”.Conclusions: Posts reflected insight into cultural awareness, values and humility. Students identified growth opportunities for themselves and their children. Suggestions for future education and research are presented.

School-based fire safety education programs are implemented by fire services organisations around the world to improve children’s fire safety knowledge and skills. Such education is considered the single most modifiable strategy that fire services organisations can implement to reduce the risk that children will misuse fire or be harmed by fire. Despite this, there are no overarching and evidence-based guidelines for the development of new programs or the evaluation and modification of existing ones. To fill this void, a rapid evidence assessment of existing literature was conducted. Results revealed 25 evidence-based practices that held true in a variety of contexts and methodologically diverse studies. These practices inform an empirical framework that can be used to guide fire safety education programs for children.

Cultural awareness and intercultural understanding are crucial parts of learning a new language. However, not everyone has the chance to have face-to-face interaction with the people from diverse cultures. Computer-mediated technologies are favorable tools that can help learners to engage in intercultural communications. This chapter aims at intercultural learning through technology-enhanced language learning. Five main themes have emerged as the result of literature review alongside a report on major research descriptive. The literature revealed that there are 1) positive attitudes toward using digital tools in intercultural language learning, 2) the development of critical cultural awareness and intercultural communicative competence, 3) opportunities for improving all aspects of language learning. However, 4) textbooks are still the predominant learning resource, and 5) a necessity is felt for special technical skills and competencies. This study is helpful to consider the existing challenges and find new directions for future investigations.

This chapter seeks to help teachers and school mental health professionals understand the needs of students who have faced a disaster or terrorism and identify strategies for school-based responses. The chapter provides an overview of the effects of these events on school children and youths, including relevant developmental and cultural considerations, and the impact on the school setting. Then, the discussion emphasizes recommendations for, and possible responses by, teachers, school-based mental health professionals, and administrators. Indeed, just as these traumas can affect multiple levels of school children’s lives, the needed response of school-based professionals can be framed as multi-level, ranging from curricular modification to interventions specifically targeting youngsters’ socio-emotional needs. The sections that follow seek to inform and guide responses for school personnel and provide clear, “actionable” recommendations.

Rates of inclusion for children with disabilities continue to increase. Schools are also experiencing an increase in culturally and linguistically diverse students. As such, the diversity of children in classrooms across the country continues to dramatically shift and teachers are challenged to implement culturally responsive and relevant interventions. Social skills are a significant area of development for which children with disabilities frequently require intervention. Yet, important considerations regarding cultural awareness and relevancy should be made when implementing social skills interventions as research emphasizes the necessity of diverse representation in interventions. This column discusses the implementation and cultural considerations of a visual communication support used to increase social engagement among children during mealtimes.

Objective To investigate athletic training students' knowledge of culture and cultural differences, to assess the practice of culturally competent care, and to determine efficacy of cultural competency instruction. Design A mixed methods research design with a case study approach was utilized for this study. Setting This study was conducted in an athletic training course over a 2-week time period. Patients or Other Participants Ten athletic training students enrolled in a professional athletic training program at the master's level participated in this project. Sampling of participants was purposeful and based on convenience. Data Collection and Analysis The Cultural Competence Assessment (CCA) instrument was administered and analyzed to determine athletic training students' cultural awareness, sensitivity, and behavior. An assessment questionnaire and focus group were used to determine the athletic training students' experiences in diversity and cultural competency education, to evaluate the efficacy of classroom activities, and to solicit athletic training students' feedback for recommendation regarding the delivery of cultural competency knowledge and skills in the athletic training curriculum. Results The study revealed that athletic training students demonstrated good cultural awareness and sensitivity. However, it was also discovered that athletic training students were less likely to practice culturally competent care. Conclusion(s) Both didactic and clinical experiences increased athletic training students' cultural competency; however, athletic training students wanted to spend more time on cultural competency within the curriculum. Athletic training students also believed it was important to use various tools to teach about cultural competency.
