Educational Ideals of Paul Geheeb and Rabindranath Tagore

The focus of this chapter is on a comparison of the two educational systems—one, Odenwaldschule–Ecole d’Humanité, and second, Rabindranath Tagore’s school in Santiniketan. For both, the most important underlying principle was freedom of the students to express and develop themselves. The similarities between the two systems are obvious: emphasis on a natural life, the role of religion, of asceticism, of music and singing, of co-education, of the ritualizing of daily life, and the reverence of the child’s personality. The idea of seva (social service) distinguished Tagore’s school. The importance of manual work and of the crafts has an important place in Geheeb’s school, but not so much in Santiniketan.

This paper aims to discuss the role of religion in contemporary European education systems, especially in the realm of social rights. Classical social thinkers of the late 19th and early 20th century all thought that religion would either disappear or become progressively attenuated with the expansion of modern institutions. They understand modernization not to involve the actual disappearance of religion, but perhaps as attenuation and certainly as changing religious forms in relation to other institutions. Studies of the relationship between religion and education in Europe seem to adopt the view that the study of religion is a precondition for tolerance and social awareness of religious diversity, as well as a prerequisite for personal development and social responsibility. Religious education is perceived as part of ‘bildung’ and a presupposition of citizenship education in its broader sense. This position challenges the foundation stones of enlightenment thought as an attempt to distinguish between knowledge and faith or citizenship and congregation. Educational systems, the par excellence institutions of Modernity, represent an interesting example of the peculiar co-existence between tradition and Modernity in European societies. The implications of the persistence of religion within the institutions of Modernity are both epistemological and political. While the foundations of modern knowledge on reason are challenged in several aspects of school knowledge, fundamentalism, nationalism and social exclusion.

AbstractIn this article possible connections between religious discourse and child abuse are explored. It would be dangerously naive to consider religion as either irrelevant to or as the cure for the problem of child abuse. The assumption of a direct connection between religion and society is criticised, and a plea is made for rethinking and re-evaluating any straightforward claims for religion promoting moral integrity and providing solutions for child abuse. It is suggested that by considering the complex and indirect interrelationship of religion and mundane, daily life, the involvement of religion in this terrible problem can be dealt with in a more constructive manner and a contribution to a worthwhile turnabout may become possible.

For decades, Islamist groups’ provision of social services, such as schooling, medical care, welfare provision, and childrearing, has been a key feature of life and politics in the Islamic world. But despite their ubiquity, this phenomenon largely eluded sustained investigation and theorizing. This has recently changed as a variety of scholars have made increasingly detailed interventions into the question of nonstate social service provision by Islamist actors. This chapter reviews this literature and uses cases from across the Islamic world to conceptualize Islamist social service provision, theorize its causes, and isolate its effects. In the process, it highlights how research into Islamist social service provision can contribute to broader research agendas, including the political economy of authoritarian regimes and the role of religion in comparative political behavior.

In regard to the growing interest of the people in religion, the Bashkir literature is changing. Modern writers are passionate about finding new methods and ways to display the values of the Islamic religion. Among them is Fiyuza Gataullina, whose spiritual investigations are determined by ideological and aesthetic content of the works and are inextricably linked to the religious atmosphere of the last century. Life experience and knowledge of Islamic culture traditions helped the author to create an artwork from everyday scenes of people's life. The specificity of her style is expressed in epithets that reveal the spiritual state of the heroes of the story. In her opinion, people even with a traditional family structure can be deeply religious and give their children a religious education based on love. The writer considers religion as a part of the overall spiritual integrity, which becomes the main concept of her creative method. The skill of the author is revealed in the professional interpretation of the precepts of Islam. Her ability to express complex experiences and feelings of the characters through the elements of nature makes a strong impression. She helps the reader to realize the psychological and philosophical role of religion, awakening in man the hope for the future, testing him for morality. The tension and drama of the events are solved in an original way, with an attempt to focus the reader's attention on one of the pillars of Islam - the prayer, through which the character of the Muslim woman is revealed. Thus, the analysis of the novel By F. Gataullina helps to understand that dua, which has firmly entered the life of Muslims, has incredible powers and takes an important place in the religious system of people's views.

Ivan Ogienko (1882-1972), also known as Metropolitan Hilarion, devoted much attention to the role and place of religion in the national life of Ukrainians and their ethnic identity in their scholarly and theological works. Without exaggeration it can be argued that the problem of national unity of the Ukrainian people is one of the key principles of all historiosophical considerations of the famous scholar and theologian. If the purpose of the spiritual life of a Ukrainian, according to his views, is to serve God, then the purpose of state or terrestrial life is the dedicated service to his people. The purpose of heaven and the purpose of the earthly paths, intersecting in the life of a certain group of people through the lives of its individual representatives, give rise to a unique alliance of spiritual unity, the name of which is "people" or "nation." Religion (faith) in the process of transforming the anarchist crowd into a spiritually integrated and orderly national integrity serves as the transformer of the imperfect nature of the human soul into perfect.
