The Transformational Role of Technology

This chapter focuses on the transformational impacts of technology both in the hands of shoppers and within retail enterprises themselves. There are, we believe, very compelling opportunities for businesses to develop much closer and more personal relationships with shoppers through the use of technology in customer-facing roles to enhance efficiency, experience, and engagement for the shopper. However, the challenges for enterprises of actually realizing all of the potential benefits from technology, especially in the form of highly nuanced shopper information, are considerable. This chapter is as concerned with the unexpected eddies as it is with the main transformational currents of technology change. It begins with a brief exploration of the main themes of change, then turns to some of the obstacles that have prevented many retailers from intelligently exploring technological opportunities, before considering the most relevant application areas for customer-facing technology.

The COVID-19 pandemic forced universities to look at teaching provision. As a result, new technologies, an increasing usage of existing online platforms and alternative ways to engage with learners in the classroom, have together become ‘the new normal’. This research aims to answer the questions: how do higher education learners perceive the new role of technology in the classroom? Is technology overload counteracting the potential benefits that blended delivery can offer? In-depth semi-structured interviews with eight students from two seminar groups reveal their positive perception of and continuous interest in the use of technology in the physical and virtual classroom. The study provides examples and recommendations, enabling the effective deployment of technology focusing on three areas: the learner, the facilitator and the technology. Finally, this study makes important contributions to constructivism in the context of technology usage and current and post-pandemic pedagogic practice.

Abstract A variety of technologies have been proposed, tested, and used to reduce social isolation and loneliness [SIL]. Furthermore, information technology may offer a way to detect or predict patterns of SIL. In this paper, the range of technology tools for assessment (e.g., passive monitoring, tracking data patterns, electronic health records) and intervention (e.g., social robots, social media, virtual reality) are reviewed for evidence of impact, and consideration is given for related ethical issues. The role of technology in relation to the report’s recommendations is discussed, including assessment and testing of new technological interventions for their potential benefits and harms, consideration of contextual issues such as broadband access, and the role of technology in education and training. Finally, gap areas of research are explored, such as the impact of the use of technology among current younger adults as they age. Interest in the biological role of bioactive compounds present in medicinal herbs has increased over the last years. Of particular interest are plants that have an anti-Alzheimer activities. Several plants can be useful for Alzheimer (AD) management. Such as these which have anti-inflammatory activity, acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitory action, antiapoptotic, slow the aggregation of amyloid peptide and antioxidant activities. Grape seed extract (GSE) is a complex mixture of several compounds, mostly represented by polyphenols and flavonoids. Their consumption is safe and is recognized to exert several health benefits. GS flavonoids have been associated with the reduced risk of chronic diseases, we present some findings on the potential benefits of GSE for the treatment of AD.

Abstract                Indonesian Criminal Justice System consists of the police, public prosecutor and the courts. The role of the police investigators is certainly vital as the frontline in building public confidence in the rule of law in Indonesia. The role of the investigator is quite important in realizing society’s  justice. The era of globalization requires a pattern fast-paced, instant, measurable, and transparent of life and it requires investigators to follow the times by optimizing the use of technology. The aim of this study is to give effect to the rule of law in Indonesia that provides fairness, expediency and certainty. However, it considers to have priority of Pancasila values in the process of inquiry and investigation. The values of supreme divinity, God (religious), humanity, unity, democracy and justice are values that establish a balance (harmony) in enforcing the law. Law and its implementation can create product which meets the demands for social justice. Era globalisasi yang menuntut pola kehidupan yang serba cepat, instan, terukur, dan transparan menuntut penyidik untuk mengikuti perkembangan zaman dengan mengoptimalkan pemanfaatan teknologi. Tujuannya adalah untuk memberikan arti bagi penegakan hukum di Indonesia yakni memberikan keadilan, kemanfaatan, dan kepastian. Namun yang harus diperhatikan adalah mengutamakan nilai-nilai Pancasila dalam melakukan proses penyelidikan dan penyidikan. Nilai-nilai ketuhanan yang maha esa (religius), kemanusiaan, persatuan, kerakyatan dan keadilan merupakan nilai-nilai yang membangun keseimbangan (harmoni) dalam menegakkan hukum. Sehingga produk hukum dan pelaksanaannya memenuhi rasa keadilan masyarakat. Progress in information technology that is so fast is expected to improve the quality of education in Indonesia. In the world of information technology education can help and support the learning process. Especially now all the learning process activities can be done online. Progress in information technology must also be supported by quality human resources. In this case the teacher is very instrumental in the utilization of information technology in the world of education. Because the teacher is one of the education supervisors who will encourage the advancement of the quality of education in Indonesia. But in reality the quality of teachers in Indonesia is inadequate. There are still many teachers who cannot use information technology in learning especially for teachers who are senior or old. As teacher supervisors, they must improve the quality of their performance in using technology. To improve the ability of teachers to use technology, ongoing training is needed to use technology. The role of the head of the school as a supervisor is also needed, namely the principal is obliged to supervise, control, and approach the teacher in terms of the use of technology in the learning process.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the most common cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The potential benefits of natural antioxidants derived from supplemental nutrients against CVDs are well known. Remarkably, natural antioxidants exert cardioprotective effects by reducing oxidative stress, increasing vasodilation, and normalizing endothelial dysfunction. Recently, considerable evidence has highlighted an important role played by the synergistic interaction between endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) and sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) in the maintenance of endothelial function. To provide a new perspective on the role of natural antioxidants against CVDs, we focused on microRNAs (miRNAs), which are important posttranscriptional modulators in human diseases. Several miRNAs are regulated via the consumption of natural antioxidants and are related to the regulation of oxidative stress by targeting eNOS and/or SIRT1. In this review, we have discussed the specific molecular regulation of eNOS/SIRT1-related endothelial dysfunction and its contribution to CVD pathologies; furthermore, we selected nine different miRNAs that target the expression of eNOS and SIRT1 in CVDs. Additionally, we have summarized the alteration of miRNA expression and regulation of activities of miRNA through natural antioxidant consumption.

Background: Digital health solutions targeting diabetes self-care are popular and promising, but important questions remain about how these tools can most effectively help patients. Consistent with evidence of the salutary effects of note-taking in education, features that enable annotation of structured data entry might enhance the meaningfulness of the interaction, thereby promoting persistent use and benefits of a digital health solution. Method: To examine the potential benefits of note-taking, we explored how patients with type 2 diabetes used annotation features of a digital health solution and assessed the relationship between annotation and persistence in engagement as well as improvements in glycated hemoglobin (A1C). Secondary data from 3142 users of the BlueStar digital health solution collected between December 2013 and June 2017 were analyzed, with a subgroup of 372 reporting A1C lab values. Results: About a third of patients recorded annotations while using the platform. Annotation themes largely reflected self-management behaviors (diet, physical activity, medication adherence) and well-being (mood, health status). Early use of contextual annotations was associated with greater engagement over time and with greater improvements in A1C. Conclusions: Our research provides preliminary evidence of the benefits of annotation features in a digital health solution. Future research is needed to assess the causal impact of note-taking and the moderating role of thematic content reflected in notes.

The study, based on the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT), investigates the determinants of e-learning acceptance. We create a cross-level variable of the incentive and social influence to explore with the other variable context effect and the interaction effects in the acceptance of e-learning. Data collected from 932 respondents in Taiwan were tested against the research model using the hierarchical linear model approach. This model improved Yu, Liao, Wen’s research to detailed intended the learning environment. The results showed that individual-level variables (performance expectations, effort expectancy, perceived behavioral control), and group-level variables (incentive, social influence) have a positive effect on behavioral intention. The incentive has an effect on behavioral intention through the moderating role of manager influence.

This qualitative study explored the benefits of implementing (international) teleconsultation in a Master of Science in Occupational Therapy (MSOT) curriculum. Twenty-one students provided supervised teleconsultative services to individuals with disabilities in Guatemala and were responsible for completing assessments, setting goals, and providing resources to address goals and improve quality of life.  Data were collected through student presentations and coded for relevant themes. Analysis revealed new learning in the areas of the occupational therapy process, cultural awareness, and technology. Three themes emerged:  Increased Understanding of Awareness of and Challenges to Working with People of Different Culture; Need for Adaptability and Flexibility as Practicing Clinicians; Emerging Role of Technology in Occupational Therapy. Based on results from this study, occupational therapy academicians should consider implementing similar programs into curricula and conduct related research in order to promote not only student learning, but also to advance the use of technology in occupational therapy practice.

The study aimed to examine the role of colleges of education in Yemeni universities in developing the twenty-first century skills among students. The skills include critical thinking and problem-solving; creative thinking; effective communication and cooperation with others; flexibility; adaptation and change management; self and continuous learning; leadership and working with a team; taking responsibility and making decisions; using technology efficiently; understanding and interacting with diverse cultures; and work and self-management. The followed the descriptive and analytical method, using a questionnaire that was distributed to a random sample of (408) students selected from the fourth level of the Faculties of Education in four public universities: Sana'a, Hajjah, Amran, and Hodeidah.  The study results revealed a medium role that the colleges of education in Yemeni universities play in developing the twenty-first century skills among their students. The skill of effective communication and cooperation with others received the highest attention, while the skills of work, self-management and the skills of using technology efficiently received the lowest level of attention.  The study concluded with a number of conclusions, including absence of a vision for the challenges and requirements of the twenty-first century and lack of support provided to colleges to purchase facilities and equipment. The study recommended that the colleges of education should pay more attention to developing the twenty-first century skills, especially work and self-management skills and the efficient use of technology.
