Listening to the Musicking Body

Listening is generally discussed in connection with auditory perception, with the ear as the primary perceptual organ. Recently, however, more comprehensive approaches are being emphasized along with the need to understand listening in the context of cultural and historical changes. This chapter investigates the plasticity of the idea of listening, both across disciplines and across historical contexts. By engaging with various discourses on seeing, hearing, and kinesthetics in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the present chapter examines how a holistic conceptualization of listening that goes beyond the ear and functions in the context of the whole human body emerged and argues how understanding the past can shed light on the current understanding of music and the body.

In Agency and Embodiment, Carrie Noland describes gesture as “a type of inscription, a parsing of the body into signifying and operational units”, considering it as a means to read and decode the human body. Through an analysis of James Joyce’s collection of Epiphanies, my paper will examine how gesture, as a mode of expression of the body, can be transcribed on the written page. Written and collected to record a “spiritual manifestation” shining through “in the vulgarity of speech or gesture, or in a memorable phase of the mind itself”, Joyce’s Epiphanies can be considered as the first step in his sustained attempt to develop an art of gesture-as-rhythm. These short pieces appear as the site in which the author seeks, through the medium of writing, to negotiate and redefine the boundaries of the physical human body. Moving towards a mapping of body and mind through the concept of rhythm, and pointing to a collaboration and mutual influence between interiority and exteriority, the Epiphanies open up a space for the reformulation of the relationship between the human body and its environment. Unpacking the ideas that sit at the heart of the concept of epiphany, the paper will shed light on how this particular mode of writing produces a rhythmic art of gesture, fixing and simultaneously liberating human and nonhuman bodies on the written page.

Antarctica was the last continent to be known. Human encounters with the region acquired different characteristics over time. Within the framework of dominant narratives, the early ‘exploitation’ of the territory was given less attention than late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century ‘exploration’. Nineteenth-century exploitation was especially associated with sealing on the South Shetland Islands. Dominant narratives on the period refer to the captains of sealing vessels, the discovery of geographical features, the volume of resources obtained. However, they do not consider the life of the ordinary sealers who lived and worked on the islands. This chapter aims to show the power of archaeology to shed light on these ‘invisible people’ and their forgotten stories. It holds that archaeology offers a possibility for reimagining the past of Antarctica, calling for a revision of traditional narratives.

The aim of this article is to analyze traditional somatic ideas of the Turkic-Mongolians of Inner Asia that they formed as a part of their “theories” on the origin of the world and man. Data and methods. An important part of the studies of man as a social and biological being is the investigation of the human body conceptualizations of the Turkic-Mongolian peoples. When explored, the ideas that traditional societies had on the human body and its constituent parts, such as organs, muscles, and blood may give an important clue to understanding traditional medicine methods, attitudes towards the body, and the body potentialities. In this respect, one cannot overestimate the relevance of the nomads’ folklore texts dealing with the origin of the world and man as a research source. A variety of such stories relating how man was made of clay, wood, metal, bone, and stone may shed light on the invention and development of new materials by man, as well as on the technologies they used for their processing. The study is based on a comparative historical method that helps to identify commonalities characteristic of the Turkic-Mongolian world in understanding the human body; as well as the method of cultural and historical reconstruction, which gives an insight into the logic of archaic views. Conclusions. In the somatic conceptualizations of the Turkic-Mongolians, the key and stable correspondences of the natural and the human are such series as bone – wood, flesh – clay/earth /stone form. The associations of the human body and its parts with metals manifest to a lesser degree. The processes of maturing and aging of the human body were conceptualized by traditional societies in terms of both natural and cultural phenomena, such as the life cycles of a tree and ceramics making of raw/soft clay hardened in the process of its firing.

Ancient physicians deemedthe human body as a set of various interrelatedorgans. They believed that in dealing with patients a particular afflicted organ should not be consideredin isolation and treated exclusivelysincethe illnessmight occasionally originate from another organ’s dysfunction, which should be cured beforehand. Stomach is one of the organs that the physicians were very concerned about in the past. Since the first stage of digestion occurs in the stomach, gastric dysfunction will impair digestion and various organs of the body will not be well nourished and get sick afterwards. Among the organs affected by the stomach function is the eye the diseases of which may occur asnyctalopia, poor eyesight, visual hallucinations, and periorbital puffiness secondary to gastric dysfunction. The materiality of the human body is to be understood in a complementary relation with the objects that produce an extension of life and the privation of it. The Memory Police (Yoko Ogawa) and Human Acts (Han Kang) reassemble the past through the instrumentalization of objects, thus creating life in the present. The question that arises is whether this certain present can preserve the integrity of the human. Flights by Olga Tokarczuk suggests the body as a locus of conversion and tackles contemporary interests regarding plastic, for instance. These texts authored by Ogawa, Kang and Tokarczuk allow for a repositioning of the standpoint from which the consequences of subject-object relation are approached in literature, because they tap into human experience by addressing the essentiality of objects as repositories of memories. The essay attempts to analyse how objects having either a beneficial or a lethal meaning can be seen as deeply encapsulated in human existence.

This article examines the role of anatomical references in the representation of emotion and argues that they constitute textual markers of the Rabelaisian view of the relationship between the body and the soul, and the nature of the soul itself. By analyzing the ancient models of natural philosophy and medicine on which Rabelais draws—Galen, in particular—and by contextualizing Rabelais’s thinking within contemporary debates on the faculties of the soul, the article aims to shed light on his representation of the intersection between material and immaterial processes within the human body. Instead of trying to reconcile potentially contradictory aspects of these ancient models with the Christian faith, Rabelais’s prose is informed by an intuitive understanding of ancient philosophy. His exploitation of the Galenic concept of the animal spirits gives us invaluable insights into the influence of materialist representations of the soul on Rabelais’s thinking. Cet article étudie le rôle des références anatomiques dans la représentation rabelaisienne de l’émotion et propose d’y voir les marqueurs textuels de la façon dont Rabelais conçoit les rapports entre l’âme et le corps, et la nature de l’âme elle-même. En analysant les modèles anciens de la philosophie naturelle et de la médecine — Galien en particulier — dont Rabelais s’inspire et en situant sa pensée dans le contexte des débats contemporains sur les facultés de l’âme, l’article vise à éclairer la façon dont Rabelais représente l’intersection à l’intérieur du corps humain des processus matériels et immatériels. Sans chercher à réconcilier avec la foi chrétienne certains aspects de ces anciens modèles qui peuvent être en contradiction avec elle, la prose rabelaisienne porte la marque d’une compréhension intuitive de la philosophie ancienne. En particulier, l’exploitation de la conception galénique des esprits animaux donne de précieux aperçus concernant l’influence des représentations matérialistes de l’âme sur la pensée de Rabelais.

Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) is one of the most common subtypes of soft tissue sarcoma in adults and can occur in almost any part of the body. Uterine leiomyosarcoma is the most common subtype of uterine sarcoma. Increased awareness of this unique histology has allowed for the development of drugs that are specific to LMS and has begun to shed light on the similarities and possible unique aspects of soft tissue and uterine LMS. In this review, we summarize the current understanding of the epidemiology, diagnosis, genomics, and treatment options for LMS.

The widespread uptake of the Anthropocene concept over the past two decades has seen a concomitant rise in cultural forms that trade on nostalgia for Paleolithic life. Mud running, CrossFit, and the Paleo diet exemplify this trend, with the Paleolithic hunter-gatherer at the center of their popular prescriptions for healthy living. In this article, we identify these practices as embodying the anxieties of the Anthropocene as well as its historical and racial elisions. By focusing on the oblique and subtle racializations of Anthropocene health and fitness cultures, we contribute to understandings of the cultural significance of the human body in the Anthropocene and the relationship between the biopolitics of health and geological life, arguing that the body is a key site through which the tensions and inequalities of the Anthropocene are played out. And by unraveling how the Paleolithic imagination is rooted in a distinctly capitalist, Euro-American attitude to the body in nature, we show the Anthropocene to be defined by uneven distributions of health as self-optimization, and health as environmental risk. The Paleolithic imagination demonstrates the tangled politics of race, science, and nature in the twenty-first century, in which global ecological instability, the biopolitics of health, the shadows of colonialism, and consumer capitalism converge.

In any culture codes for bodily communication are conventionally elaborated and, like other codes, require skillful manipulation. The body is the most familiar of all communicative modes, as well as the sensible center of human experience, which lives or dies with it. Upon it, all other codes are inscribed to a greater or lesser extent. There is no form of communication that does not require the body's engagement, though printed and written messages may involve a smaller direct range of its perceptual and motor capacities than oral-gestural messages do. In addition, strange experiences are often translated and made familiar by comparisons with the body, and by categories of classification derived from the body's experience. The body is a convenient touchstone by which to gauge, explore, and interpret the unfamiliar, an essential information-gathering probe we never quite give up, no matter how sophisticated the supplemental modes available to us. The body is also squarely at the critical juncture between nature and culture. It is nature, or in any case man's most direct link to nature, capable of opposing and resisting it at least for a while, either its own or that external to it. The inscription of cultural codes upon the body is perhaps the principal means of detaching it from nature and transforming it into culture. The body and its actions, therefore, have a richly ambiguous social meaning. They can be made to emphasize perceived distinctions between nature or culture as the need arises, or to reconcile them. Because men use what is known to them to make sense of what is not, a deep inquisitiveness about the relationship between electricity and the human body was part of the process of becoming socially acquainted with that novel and mysterious force in the late nineteenth century. And though electricity might be discussed either as an extension of nature or of the body, or as something opposed to and outside them, it was defined in any case inescapably with reference to them.
