The second section examines religious influence on diverse families of law. The third section looks at the impact of civil religions on law. The fourth section discusses religious dimensions of law. The fifth section considers the relationship between world law and world religion.

Abstract Since the third wave of democracy, term limits have become a popular fixture of most constitutions intended to constrain the executive. Yet, recent constitutional reforms around the world show that presidents seeking re-election sometimes overturn the entire constitutional order to extend their power. What is the impact of these constitutional manipulations on the longevity of the executive in office? Using survival analysis of all political leaders and national constitutions from 1875 to 2015, this article demonstrates, for the first time, that when ‘authoritarian-aspiring’ presidents remove constitutional term limits, they increase their stay in office by more than 40%. Our findings contrast with a widely held position in the comparative authoritarian literature suggesting that dictators survive longer under institutional constraints. On the contrary, we argue that by removing constitutional barriers, rulers consolidate more power at the expense of their most ambitious allies and can stay in power longer.

An investigation is conducted on the effect of financial distress on customer service levels in the U.S. airline industry. Using data from the first quarter of 1998 to the third quarter of 2006, we employ a seemingly unrelated regressions (SUR) model to analyze the impact of financial distress on three measures of customer service. We find that higher financial distress is associated with better on-time performance of airlines and fewer lost bags. The relationship of airline financial distress to the number of bumped customers, however, is insignificant.

The chapter builds on the analysis in Chapter 1 with a view to exploring the nature of law and its relationship with capitalist society in more detail. The previous chapter used an analysis of capitalism’s deep structures to explore the nature of law’s role(s) in capitalism, engaging with the various legal ‘functions’ that capitalism presupposes. The purpose of this chapter is to explore the implications of this understanding of law’s role (or function) when it comes to understanding law’s form. The first section begins by developing a theory of the legal form by engaging with the work of Evgeny Pashukanis. The second section teases out the implications of this analysis for our understanding of the relationship between the legal form and capitalism’s contradictions. The third section draws on this analysis to shed light on the relationship between legal form and content. The fourth section makes some tentative conclusions about the implications of this analysis for our understanding of labour law.

Sources of law serve to separate the province of law from the realm of non-law. Only propositions that are derived from a valid source of law are genuinely legal propositions. This article outlines the role of sources of law and legal method in the study of comparative law. The second section explains why these topics have been central to comparative legal scholarship from its very beginnings. The third section attempts to clarify their ambit for the purposes of comparative study, and identifies the pitfalls lurking for the comparative lawyer who wants to determine another system’s sources of law and the methodological approach prevailing there. The fourth section gives an overview of the most important comparative studies specifically dedicated to these matters. The fifth section maps out some areas which merit further research.

(2) The use of Esteban Marquillas’ Shift-Share analysis showed that in the area of Special Region of Yogyakarta there had been a shift in the economic structure from the primary sector to the secondary and tertiary sectors. (3) The economic sectors’ growth in Indonesia could lead to the growth of aggregate GRDP in Special Region of Yogyakarta as much as 539.53 billion IDR. Suggestions offered by this research are as follows: (1) policy making by the government related to development has to pay attention to the relationship between economic growth and unemployment rate. (2) Government has to address the economic transformation from primary to tertiary sectors; especially for development planning; and (3) government needs to focus on economic development for the dominant sectors of economy in DIY province.

The article is devoted to studying the impact of globalization processes on the development of national economies. In particular, the indicators of assessing the impact of globalization on financial and non-financial indicators of countries' development are considered. Attention is paid to the place of Ukraine in the KOF Globalization Index 2020 ranking, namely in terms of economic, social, and political globalization. The author has formed three groups of indicators that allow assessing the influence of globalization on the securities market of a country. The first group includes indicators that help determine the degree of integration of the national securities market into the global one. The second group includes indicators that determine the extent to which domestic securities legislation and principles of securities market regulation are adapted to international standards. The third group of indicators is aimed at quantifying the impact of trends in the global securities market on the national. The article examines the impact of one of the indicators of the third group on the securities market of Ukraine. In particular, the correlation analysis of the relationship between the Ukrainian PFTS index and the indices of American, British, European, and Polish stock markets was conducted. The author made conclusions about the availability of the significant correlation between global stock indices, as well as the weak impact of global securities market trends on the dynamics of the Ukrainian market. It was also revealed during the analysis, that the level of correlation between indices depends on whether the financial market is in crisis. Particularly, the analysis covered three periods: the 2008-2010 financial crisis, the 2020-2021 Covid-19 crisis, and the 2010-2020 period between the crises.

With the participation of experts on international migration, government representatives, academics, and civil society, the conference highlighted research results and relevant intervention experience concerning this problem in Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Mexico. This article presents an analysis of the presentations given and the discussions held at the conference. It consists of four parts. The first section compares the similarities and differences regarding migration and violence in Colombia and El Salvador, Guatemala, and Mexico. The second section presents the major epistemological challenges emerging from research and models of intervention. The third section presents the implications of the epistemological challenges and their impact on public policy. The second section of this article suggests that the study of language is a cognitive model for comparative law. The third section discusses language's dependence on translation. The fourth section discusses comparative law translations in terms of the contrasting categories that undergird the civil and common law legal systems. The fifth section examines the post-war comparative law scholars' immersion in a new language and legal culture. The sixth section situates comparative law between deeply entrenched, mutually contradictory aspirations of universalism and pluralism. The seventh section shows that former domains of pluralism and difference indeed are receding, but that difference itself remains undiminished. The eighth section notes that comparative law's effectiveness as a translator of the foreign depends on how well its acquired skills and methods can be adapted to new kinds of foreignness. The ninth section offers a concrete application of comparative law analysis as translator of current European legal developments.
