Abstract Since the third wave of democracy, term limits have become a popular fixture of most constitutions intended to constrain the executive. Yet, recent constitutional reforms around the world show that presidents seeking re-election sometimes overturn the entire constitutional order to extend their power. What is the impact of these constitutional manipulations on the longevity of the executive in office? Using survival analysis of all political leaders and national constitutions from 1875 to 2015, this article demonstrates, for the first time, that when ‘authoritarian-aspiring’ presidents remove constitutional term limits, they increase their stay in office by more than 40%. Our findings contrast with a widely held position in the comparative authoritarian literature suggesting that dictators survive longer under institutional constraints. On the contrary, we argue that by removing constitutional barriers, rulers consolidate more power at the expense of their most ambitious allies and can stay in power longer.

An investigation is conducted on the effect of financial distress on customer service levels in the U.S. airline industry. Using data from the first quarter of 1998 to the third quarter of 2006, we employ a seemingly unrelated regressions (SUR) model to analyze the impact of financial distress on three measures of customer service. We find that higher financial distress is associated with better on-time performance of airlines and fewer lost bags. The relationship of airline financial distress to the number of bumped customers, however, is insignificant.

This article examines the link between comparative law and religion. The first section examines the scholarly literature on interrelationships of comparative law and religion, which is skimpy, to say the least. The second section examines religious influence on diverse families of law. The third section looks at the impact of civil religions on law. The fourth section discusses religious dimensions of law. The fifth section considers the relationship between world law and world religion.

The question asked in the heading was answered in this article in four steps. In the first step, an attempt was made to find an accurate account of biblical prophecy by means of a critical discussion of certain influential interpretations of it. In the second step, the extent to which biblical prophecy could serve as a model for contemporary Christians was discussed and an acceptable Christian model of prophetic witness was formulated by drawing on the views of different authors. In the third step, the impact of democracy on the prophetic witness of the church was discussed. The Dutch theologian, Gerrit de Kruijf’s view that the public prophetic witness of the church is not appropriate in democratic societies was criticised and the legitimacy of certain forms of prophetic witness in such societies defended. In the final step, a number of examples of the prophetic witness that is needed in the present democratic South Africa were provided.

The first aim of this study was to determine the relationship between the growth rate of GRDP and the growth rate of sectors’ labor absorption in Special Region of Yogyakarta. The second objective was using the Esteban Marquillas’ Shift-Share analysis to prove whether there has been a structural transformation of the economy in Special Region of Yogyakarta during 2009-2014. The third aim was to determine the impact of economic sectors’ growth in Indonesia on the growth of aggregate GRDP in Special Region of Yogyakarta.  Results of this study were: (1) There were three conditions used to observe the relationship between the growth rate of GRDP and the growth rate of labor absorption in Special Region of Yogyakarta namely anomalous; regressive; and progressive. (2) The use of Esteban Marquillas’ Shift-Share analysis showed that in the area of Special Region of Yogyakarta there had been a shift in the economic structure from the primary sector to the secondary and tertiary sectors. (3) The economic sectors’ growth in Indonesia could lead to the growth of aggregate GRDP in Special Region of Yogyakarta as much as 539.53 billion IDR. Suggestions offered by this research are as follows: (1) policy making by the government related to development has to pay attention to the relationship between economic growth and unemployment rate. (2) Government has to address the economic transformation from primary to tertiary sectors; especially for development planning; and (3) government needs to focus on economic development for the dominant sectors of economy in DIY province.

The article is devoted to studying the impact of globalization processes on the development of national economies. In particular, the indicators of assessing the impact of globalization on financial and non-financial indicators of countries' development are considered. Attention is paid to the place of Ukraine in the KOF Globalization Index 2020 ranking, namely in terms of economic, social, and political globalization. The author has formed three groups of indicators that allow assessing the influence of globalization on the securities market of a country. The first group includes indicators that help determine the degree of integration of the national securities market into the global one. The second group includes indicators that determine the extent to which domestic securities legislation and principles of securities market regulation are adapted to international standards. The third group of indicators is aimed at quantifying the impact of trends in the global securities market on the national. The article examines the impact of one of the indicators of the third group on the securities market of Ukraine. In particular, the correlation analysis of the relationship between the Ukrainian PFTS index and the indices of American, British, European, and Polish stock markets was conducted. The author made conclusions about the availability of the significant correlation between global stock indices, as well as the weak impact of global securities market trends on the dynamics of the Ukrainian market. It was also revealed during the analysis, that the level of correlation between indices depends on whether the financial market is in crisis. Particularly, the analysis covered three periods: the 2008-2010 financial crisis, the 2020-2021 Covid-19 crisis, and the 2010-2020 period between the crises.

Abstract Each marriage is the beginning of multiple intergenerational in-law relationships. Drawing on a survey of 351 women about their relationships with their mothers-in-law (MILs), this article reports on the impact of family triangles and boundary ambiguity on the quality of the relationship. In a three-block regression analysis, predicting a seven-item relationship quality scale, the first block included six demographic variables. The second and third blocks included three survey items each of reported relationship triangles and boundary ambiguity in a woman’s interactions with her MIL. Results revealed that although the couple having children predicted worse relationship quality in the demographic block, that result was no longer significant once family triangle measures were entered. All three measures of boundary ambiguity were also significant. The three measures of boundary ambiguity eclipsed two of the three family triangles when entered in the third block, leaving only the daughter-in-law feeling comfortable going directly to the MIL about important issues still significant.

Various studies have shown the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on mental health, identifying that people with a strong fear of getting infected are more prone to become stressed, depressed, anxious and to experience sleeping disturbance. The present study focuses on the impact of fear of COVID-19 and its relationship with insomnia among dentists. 83 dentists from public and private clinics were included in the research. A questionnaire was especially constructed for this study, consisting of three parts: the first part gathered socio-demographic and medical data, and a succession of self-rated items collected opinions about lockdown and preventive behaviors; the second part evaluated the level of fear of infection with Coronavirus-19 using the Fear of Covid 19 Scale; the third part investigated the presence of insomnia using the Athens Insomnia Scale. Collected data were processed using SPSS (v. 25). The total scores for fear of COVID 19 and insomnia were assessed. A strong positive correlation was identified between the total score of AIS and the total score of FCV-19S. The fear of COVID-19 had a significant positive correlation with the practice of several preventive behaviors. Dentists with chronic diseases were found to be more prone to suffer from insomnia than healthy dentists. Significant differences between women and men in terms of night symptoms were discussed. The findings are useful for dentists and policy makers to evaluate the impact of fear of infection on mental health status.
