ABSTRACTIn this study, we developed, coordinated, and integrated several technologies including novel whole organ imaging, software development to support the very first precise 3D neuroanatomical mapping and molecular phenotyping of the intracardiac nervous system (ICN). While qualitative and gross anatomical descriptions of the anatomy of the ICN have been presented, we here bring forth the first comprehensive atlas at large scale of the entire ICN in rat at a single cell resolution. Our work for the first time provides a novel 3D model to precisely integrate anatomical, functional and molecular data in the 3D digitally reconstructed whole heart with high resolution at the micron scale. This work represents the cutting edge in a long history of attempts to understand the anatomical substrate upon which the neuronal control of cardiac function is built. To our knowledge, there has not yet been a comprehensive histological mapping to generate a neurocardiac atlas at cellular and molecular level for the whole heart of any species. We now display the full extent and the position of neuronal clusters on the base and posterior left atrium, and the distribution of molecular phenotypes in that context. In addition we display in this context distinct molecular phenotypes that are defined along the base-to-apex axis, and the present novel discovery of their phenotypical spatial gradients, have not been previously described. The development of these approaches needed to acquire these data has produced method pipelines which can not only achieve the goals of anatomical and molecular mapping of the heart, but also provide the method pipelines for mapping other organs (e.g., stomach, lung, kidney, and liver).

AbstractThe Eurasian plant Stipa capillata is the most widespread species within feather grasses. Many taxa of the genus are dominants in steppe plant communities and can be used for their classification and in studies related to climate change. Moreover, some species are of economic importance mainly as fodder plants and can be used for soil remediation processes. Although large-scale molecular data has begun to appear, there is still no complete or draft genome for any Stipa species. Thus, here we present a single-molecule long-read sequencing dataset generated using the Pacific Biosciences Sequel System. A draft genome of about 1004 Mb was obtained with a contig N50 length of 351 kb. Importantly, here we report 81,224 annotated protein-coding genes, present 77,614 perfect and 58 unique imperfect SSRs, reveal the putative allopolyploid nature of S. capillata, investigate the evolutionary history of the genus, demonstrate structural heteroplasmy of the chloroplast genome and announce for the first time the mitochondrial genome in Stipa. The assembled nuclear, mitochondrial and chloroplast genomes provide a significant source of genetic data for further works on phylogeny, hybridisation and population studies within Stipa and the grass family Poaceae.

Plants seem to be rather defenceless, they are unable to do motion, have no nervous system or immune system unlike animals. Besides this, plants do have hormones, though these substances are produced not in glands. In view of their complexity they lagged behind animals, however, plant organisms show large scale integration in their structure and function. In higher plants, such as in animals, the intercellular communication is fulfilled through chemical messengers. These specific compounds in plants are called phytohormones, or in a wide sense, bioregulators. Even a small quantity of these endogenous organic compounds are able to regulate the operation, growth and development of higher plants, and keep the connection between cells, tissues and synergy beween organs. Since they do not have nervous and immume systems, phytohormones play essential role in plants’ life. Orv. Hetil., 2014, 155(26), 1011–1018.

Large-scale tidal power development in the Bay of Fundy has been given serious consideration for over 60 years. There has been a long history of productive interaction between environmental scientists and engineers durinn the many feasibility studies undertaken. Up until recently, tidal power proposals were dropped on economic grounds. However, large-scale development in the upper reaches of the Bay of Fundy now appears to be economically viable and a pre-commitment design program is highly likely in the near future. A large number of basic scientific research studies have been and are being conducted by government and university scientists. Likely environmental impacts have been examined by scientists and engineers together in a preliminary fashion on several occasions. A full environmental assessment will be conducted before a final decision is made and the results will definately influence the outcome.

AbstractThe use of different sources of evidence has been recommended in order to conduct species delimitation analyses to solve taxonomic issues. In this study, we use a maximum likelihood framework to combine morphological and molecular traits to study the case of Xylodon australis (Hymenochaetales, Basidiomycota) using the locate.yeti function from the phytools R package. Xylodon australis has been considered a single species distributed across Australia, New Zealand and Patagonia. Multi-locus phylogenetic analyses were conducted to unmask the actual diversity under X. australis as well as the kinship relations respect their relatives. To assess the taxonomic position of each clade, locate.yeti function was used to locate in a molecular phylogeny the X. australis type material for which no molecular data was available using morphological continuous traits. Two different species were distinguished under the X. australis name, one from Australia–New Zealand and other from Patagonia. In addition, a close relationship with Xylodon lenis, a species from the South East of Asia, was confirmed for the Patagonian clade. We discuss the implications of our results for the biogeographical history of this genus and we evaluate the potential of this method to be used with historical collections for which molecular data is not available.

Abstract Background To report a case of acute exudative polymorphous paraneoplastic vitelliform maculopathy in a patient with a history of choroidal melanoma, with metastases to the pancreas, liver, and central nervous system. Case presentation A 63-year-old patient, with a history of enucleation of the right eye due to choroidal melanoma, complained of progressive visual loss during a follow-up visit. Fundoscopic examination revealed multiple small areas of serous retinal detachment scattered throughout the posterior pole and ancillary tests confirmed the diagnosis of acute exudative polymorphous paraneoplastic vitelliform maculopathy (AEPPVM). Screening for systemic metastases showed pancreatic, hepatic, and central nervous system involvement. Conclusions We describe a rare case of acute exudative polymorphous paraneoplastic vitelliform maculopathy, which should be considered in patients with or without a history of melanoma, who have vitelliform retinal detachments. Nevertheless, no previous reviews of literature have shown a correlation between AEPPVM and pancreatic metastasis.

Edge computing is the next Internet frontier that will leverage computing resources located near users, sensors, and data stores to provide more responsive services. Therefore, it is envisioned that a large-scale, geographically dispersed, and resource-rich distributed system will emerge and play a key role in the future Internet. However, given the loosely coupled nature of such complex systems, their operational conditions are expected to change significantly over time. In this context, the performance characteristics of such systems will need to be captured rapidly, which is referred to as performance benchmarking, for application deployment, resource orchestration, and adaptive decision-making. Edge performance benchmarking is a nascent research avenue that has started gaining momentum over the past five years. This article first reviews articles published over the past three decades to trace the history of performance benchmarking from tightly coupled to loosely coupled systems. It then systematically classifies previous research to identify the system under test, techniques analyzed, and benchmark runtime in edge performance benchmarking.

Abstract Background The traditional Chinese medicine formula Si-Jun-Zi-Tang (SJZT) has a long history of application in the treatment of functional dyspepsia (non-ulcer dyspepsia, FD)-like symptoms. SJZT-based therapies have been claimed to be beneficial in managing FD. This study aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of SJZT-based therapies in treating FD by meta-analysis. Methods Systematic searches for RCTs were conducted in seven databases (up to February 2019) without language restrictions. Data were analyzed using Cochrane RevMan software version 5.3.0 and Stata software version 13.1, and reported as relative risk (RR) or odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). The primary outcome was response rate and the secondary outcomes were gastric emptying, quality of life, adverse effects and relapse rate. The quality of evidence was evaluated according to criteria from the Cochrane risk of bias. Results A total of 341 potentially relevant publications were identified, and 12 RCTs were eligible for inclusion. For the response rate, there was a statically significant benefit in favor of SJZT-based therapies (RR = 1.23; 95% CI 1.17 to 1.30). However, the benefit was limited to modified SJZT (MSJZT). The relapse rate of FD patients received SJZT-based therapies was lower than that of patients who received conventional medicines (OR = 0.23; 95% CI 0.10 to 0.51). No SJZT-based therapies-related adverse effect was reported. Conclusion SJZT-based prescriptions may be effective in treating FD and no serious side-effects were identified, but the effect on response rate appeared to be limited to MSJZT. The results should be interpreted with caution as all the included studies were considered at a high risk of bias. Standardized, large-scale and strictly designed RCTs are needed to further validate the benefits of SJZT-based therapies for FD management. Abstract INTRODUCTION Primary central nervous system (CNS) sarcomas are rare mesenchymal non-meningothelial tumors accounting for less than 0.2% of intracranial lesions. Diagnosis and management are challenging due to the current lack of substantive clinical, histological and molecular data. METHODS We retrospectively identified all patients with diagnosis of primary CNS sarcoma at the Hospital Fundación Pediatrico la Misericordia (HOMI) in Bogota, Colombia. We collected patient demographics, disease characteristics, and outcomes for analysis. RESULTS Between 2008 and 2020, twenty-four consecutive patients were diagnosed at the HOMI representing 6% of all CNS tumors diagnosed over the same time period. The median age at presentation was 9.48 years (range:1.6–13.4). The median time of symptoms prior to diagnosis was 2 weeks (0.1–24). The most common presentation was headache (21/24- 89%) and vomiting (19/24- 79%). The frontal lobe was involved in 63% of patients (15/24) and only one patient presented with a cerebellar lesion. Histologically, these tumors were characterized by a pleomorphic spindle cell architecture and high mitotic activity. All samples lacked immunoreactivity to GFAP, CD34, EMA, and S100 and all samples had strong nuclear immunopositivity for TLE-1; BCL-2 was reactive in eighteen cases. Gross total resection was attained in fifteen patients, most patients received focal radiation therapy and ICE chemotherapy. Progression-free survival at 12 and 24 months was 57% and 31% respectively. Overall survival was 77% at 12 months and 39% at 24 months. Thirteen patients relapsed, 11 presented with local failures, and 2 with intracranial recurrences outside of the radiation field. CONCLUSION Our study identifies TLE-1 as a diagnostic marker of primary CNS sarcoma, a highly malignant supratentorial tumor of childhood. Further molecular studies are urgently needed to elucidate the biology of this disease and the unusually high incidence observed in the Colombian pediatric population.
