Purpose This paper aims to present an inexact 4:2 compressor cell using carbon nanotube filed effect transistors (CNFETs). Design/methodology/approach To design this cell, the capacitive threshold logic (CTL) has been used. Findings To evaluate the proposed cell, comprehensive simulations are carried out at two levels of the circuit and image processing. At the circuit level, the HSPICE software has been used and the power consumption, delay, and power-delay product are calculated. Also, the power-delaytransistor count product (PDAP) is used to make a compromise between all metrics. On the other hand, the Monte Carlo analysis has been used to scrutinize the robustness of the proposed cell against the variations in the manufacturing process. The results of simulations at this level of abstraction indicate the superiority of the proposed cell to other circuits. At the application level, the MATLAB software is also used to evaluate the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) figure of merit. At this level, the two primary images are multiplied by a multiplier circuit consisting of 4:2 compressors. The results of this simulation also show the superiority of the proposed cell to others. Originality/value This cell significantly reduces the number of transistors and only consists of NOT gates.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to develop a user friendly, wearable pain management system by optimizing CAD embroidery parameters for manufacturing high performance dry transcutaneous electrical neural stimulation (TENS) electrodes. Design/methodology/approach User-centered design methodology is employed to identify user needs related to TENS devices. Optimization of CAD embroidery parameters was done by measuring and calculating resistance and signal-to-noise values for electrodes manufactured with different conductive thread, stitch pattern, and stitch density types. Findings Characteristics of the conductive thread such as thickness and irregularity, embroidery stitch pattern, stitch density therefore the amount of conductive thread used all effect resistance values and signal-to-noise values of TENS electrodes. Low resistance of TENS electrode surface does not mean high signal-to-noise ratio and high TENS signal quality. Satin stitch type with low stitch density provides the best resistance and signal-to-noise ratio for a TENS electrode. Originality/value This study reported the design process of a wearable pain management system with a focus on optimization of embroidery manufacturing parameters for development of TENS electrodes. The design process not only required technical optimization but also understanding user problems related to use of conventional TENS devices. Proposed end product is a user friendly, electronic textile based, wireless wearable pain management system in different forms suitable for major pain areas such as knee, elbow and neck.

This article presents a new method of image filtering based on a new kind of image processing transformation, particularly the wavelet-Ateb–Gabor transformation, that is a wider basis for Gabor functions. Ateb functions are symmetric functions. The developed type of filtering makes it possible to perform image transformation and to obtain better biometric image recognition results than traditional filters allow. These results are possible due to the construction of various forms and sizes of the curves of the developed functions. Further, the wavelet transformation of Gabor filtering is investigated, and the time spent by the system on the operation is substantiated. The filtration is based on the images taken from NIST Special Database 302, that is publicly available. The reliability of the proposed method of wavelet-Ateb–Gabor filtering is proved by calculating and comparing the values of peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and mean square error (MSE) between two biometric images, one of which is filtered by the developed filtration method, and the other by the Gabor filter. The time characteristics of this filtering process are studied as well.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to identify the teaching innovations that have been implemented in higher education institutions in Asia and the perspectives of educators on them. Design/methodology/approach Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 28 educators who were affiliated with 23 higher education institutions in ten Asian countries/regions. The interviews covered information about the teaching innovations of the participants’ institutions, the characteristics of the innovative practices and the participants’ views on them. The relationships between the characteristics of institutions and their teaching innovations were also examined. Findings The results showed that the teaching innovations included two main categories, namely, those which involved the use of advanced technologies and those which did not. The innovations that involved the use of advanced technologies were mainly from larger institutions, while the other category was mainly from smaller ones and had been practised for less than 1.5 years. Differences were also identified between the two categories in terms of the aims and importance of innovations, innovative features, the evaluation of innovations and improvements needed for them. Originality/value The results highlighted that technology is only one of the many aspects of teaching innovations, which is different from the view prevailing in the literature. They also suggested that differences in the scale of institutions (in terms of number of students) possibly influences the kind of teaching innovations adopted.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to describe and analyze the rules on the formation of contracts under Korean law and the Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG) in a comparative way and introduce the relevant proposed rules under the Amendment Draft of the Korean Civil Code (KCC). In addition, it attempts to compare and evaluate them in light of the discipline of comparative law. Design/methodology/approach In order to achieve the purposes of the study, it executes a comparative study of the rules as to the formation of contracts of the CISG, Korean law and the Amendment Draft of the KCC. The basic question for this comparative study is placed on whether a solution from one jurisdiction is more logical than the others and to what extent each jurisdiction has responded to protect the reasonable expectations of the parties in the rules as to the formation of contracts. Findings The comparative study finds that most of the rules under the CISG are quite plausible and logical and they are more or less well reflected in the proposals advanced by the KCC amendment committee. On the other hand, the other rules under the CISG which have brought criticisms in terms of their complexity and inconsistent case law invite us their revision or consistent interpretation. The drawbacks of the CISG have also been well responded in the Amendment Draft of the KCC. Nevertheless, it is quite unfortunate that the Amendment Draft of the KCC still has a rule that regards any purported performance with non-material alteration of the terms of an offer as an acceptance. Originality/value This study may provide legal and practical advice to both the seller and the buyer when they enter into a contract for international sales of goods. In addition, it may render us an insight into newly developed or developing rules in this area and show us how they interact with each other. Furthermore, it may be particularly useful in Korea where there is an ongoing discussion for revision of the KCC.

Purpose – The opportunities that the emerging markets present to the players in the construction industry means that the players need to expand on the scope and size of their responsibilities and duties to the stakeholders. Each of the professionals now demands more specialised and sophisticated services from one another. The other players in the construction industry now require more emerging responsibilities and duties from the quantity surveyors. The purpose of this paper is to examine the roles that “modern” quantity surveyors play by measuring the gaps that exist in the services that the quantity surveyors provide. Design/methodology/approach – Primary data are collected through survey questionnaires. In total, 23 roles played by modern quantity surveyors are identified and addressed to the respondents to rank the rate at which quantity surveyors provide these “emerging” services. The collected data were analysed statistically. Findings – The results of the findings led to the conclusion that the quantity surveyors were not meeting the expectations of other players. Therefore, for competitiveness, quantity surveyors need to better meet demand expectations. Research limitations/implications – This findings of this research are constrained to the services or functions that the quantity provide in the construction industry. Practical implications – This knowledge is valuable to academic institutions that offer quantity surveying programmes, to practicing quantity surveyors, governments, and other players in the construction industry. It will allow quantity surveyors to reconcile supply and demand expectations. Originality/value – There is no known conclusive empirical study on services offered by quantity surveyors in any emerging markets. Therefore, the findings offer a fresh understanding on the services of quantity surveyors not only in Nigeria but elsewhere. While some of the services are common, others are peculiar to emerging markets.

The likelihood ratio for a continuous gravitational wave signal is viewed geometrically as a function of the orientation of two vectors; one representing the optimal signal-to-noise ratio, and the other representing the maximised likelihood ratio or F-statistic. Analytic marginalisation over the angle between the vectors yields a marginalised likelihood ratio, which is a function of the F-statistic. Further analytic marginalisation over the optimal signal-to-noise ratio is explored using different choices of prior. Monte-Carlo simulations show that the marginalised likelihood ratios had identical detection power to the F-statistic. This approach demonstrates a route to viewing the F-statistic in a Bayesian context, while retaining the advantages of its efficient computation.

Purpose – The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the impact of global celebrity chefs and their discourse about food on the genre of cookbooks in Slovenia. Design/methodology/approach – Focusing this discourse study on cookbook topics only, the analysis demonstrates the relationship between the aspirations of local celebrity chefs for the food culture represented globally by global celebrity chefs, such as Oliver, and the necessity for a local construction of specific tastes. While the central genre of TV celebrity chefs remains TV cooking shows, their businesses include a number of side products, such as cookbooks, which can be seen as recontexualisations of TV food discourse. Findings – Hence, despite this study being limited to analysis of cookbooks only, it can be claimed that the findings extend to other genres. The analysis shows that local chefs aspire to follow current trends, such as an emphasis on the local and sustainable production of food as well as enjoyment and pleasure in the form of a postmodern hybrid genre, while, on the other hand, they strive to include topics that will resonate locally, as they aim to represent themselves as the “new middle class”. Originality/value – Such an analysis brings new insights into the relationship between discourse and globalisation as well as discourse and food.

Image processing is a technical term useful for modifying images in various ways. In medicine, image processing has a vital role. One example of images in the medical world, namely retinal images, can be obtained from a fundus camera. The retina image is useful in the detection of diabetic retinopathy. In general, direct observation of diabetic retinopathy is conducted by a doctor on the retinal image. The weakness of this method is the slow handling of the disease. For this reason, a computer system is required to help doctors detect diabetes retinopathy quickly and accurately. This system involves a series of digital image processing techniques that can process retinal images into good quality images. In this research, a method to improve the quality of retinal images was designed by comparing the methods for adjusting histogram equalization, contrast stretching, and increasing brightness. The performance of the three methods was evaluated using Mean Square Error (MSE), Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR), and Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR). Low MSE values and high PSNR and SNR values indicated that the image had good quality. The results of the study revealed that the image was the best to use, as evidenced by the lowest MSE values and the highest SNR and PSNR values compared to other techniques. It indicated that adaptive histogram equalization techniques could improve image quality while maintaining its information.

This study evaluated PSNR of server display monitor and client display monitor of DSA system. The signal is acquired and imaged during the surgery and stored in the PACS server. After that, distortion of the original signal is an important problem in the process of observation on the client monitor. There are many problems such as noise generated during compression and image storage/transmission in PACS, information loss during image storage and transmission, and deterioration in image quality when outputting medical images from a monitor. The equipment used for the experiment in this study was P's DSA. We used two types of monitors in our experiment, one is P’s company resolution 1280×1024 pixel monitor, and the other is W’s company resolution 1536×2048 pixel monitor. The PACS Program used MARO-view, and for the experiment, a PSNR measurement program using Visual C++ was implemented and used for the experiment. As a result of the experiment, the PSNR value of the kidney angiography image was 26.958dB, the PSNR value of the lung angiography image was 28.9174 dB, the PSNR value of the heart angiography image was 22.8315dB, and the PSNR value of the neck angiography image was 37.0319 dB, and the knee blood vessels image showed a PSNR value of 43.2052 dB, respectively. In conclusion, it can be seen that there is almost no signal distortion in the process of acquiring, storing, and transmitting images in PACS. However, it suggests that the image signal may be distorted depending on the resolution and performance of each monitor. Therefore, it will be necessary to evaluate the performance of the monitor and to maintain the performance.

Purpose This paper aims to examine the coverage of and trends in reporting content elements in the integrated reports of the Sri Lankan companies following the International Integrated Reporting Framework (IIRF). Design/methodology/approach Based on a comprehensive checklist developed on the content elements of the IIRF, 171 corporate integrated reports were content-analyzed over a period of three years. The results were theorized subsequently using the legitimacy theory. Findings The study identifies that the extent of and trend in the coverage of content elements of the IIRF have increased during the period under consideration despite some under-addressed areas. It indicates that Sri Lankan companies are making progress in the preparation of integrated reports in line with the IIRF, which provides evidence in support of both strategic and institutional perspectives of the legitimacy theory because of the proactive actions taken by managers to acquire legitimacy along with the other normative and mimetic pressures available in the IR landscape. Originality/value This is one of the first studies that evaluate the compliance of IR adopters with the IIRF overtime in the entirety of a single country. It also develops a comprehensive index to capture the disclosure requirements of IR and extends the analysis to a voluntary context using both strategic and institutional perspectives of the legitimacy theory.
