PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to investigate whether financial distress explains the relationship between financial literacy and quality of life (QoL) among consumers who have faced life-threatening cancer. To extend this line of research, the moderating role of social supports in the relationship between financial distress and QoL is examined.Design/methodology/approachA cross-sectional survey was utilized to collect quantitative data through a self-administered questionnaire. A total of 223 consumers diagnosed with cancer in Iran participated in the study by means of a convenience sampling technique. Using a forward–backward method the questionnaire was translated from English into Persian.FindingsThe findings highlight the importance of financial literacy in managing direct and indirect costs of chronic diseases that in turn can improve consumers' QoL. Moreover, while perceived social support improves QoL of consumers diagnosed with cancer, it strengthens the negative association between financial distress and QoL. Consequently, solely receiving of emotional support from acquaintances with no financial support might be bothersome.Practical implicationsThe findings highlight the need for interventions that target financial literacy and perceived financial distress for consumers with chronic diseases. These consumers can benefit from interventions that offer support based on accurate assessments of their needs and priorities.Originality/valueThe present study is the first of its kind to highlight the importance of financial literacy in improving the QoL of consumers with chronic diseases.

Purpose – The purpose of the study is to establish the information literacy skills status, medium for the acquisition of the skills and the impacts on the quality of life of artisans in Lagos, Nigeria. Design/methodology/approach – Multi-stage sampling technique was adopted in selecting the sample. First, the purposive sampling technique was adopted in selecting five categories of artisans specialised in creative works such as: hat making, knitting of clothes, fashion designing/tailoring, hair dressing and shoe making. Second, the proportionate stratified random sampling technique was used in selecting five artisans, each representing a particular category from the 20 local government areas that make up Lagos State. Hence, the sample size is 100. The instruments for data collection were questionnaire and oral interview. The oral interview was meant to complement the questionnaire, as the researcher observed that some of the artisans communicate better in oral discussions than in written ones. The researcher personally administered the instruments. The oral interview was guided by the interview schedule constructed by the researcher based on the research questions. The questionnaire collection period lasted three weeks. Data collected were analysed using simple percentages and frequency count and presented in tables and figures. Findings – The outcome of the study revealed that the artisans’ level of information literacy skills increased following their exploration of technological gadgets such as android and smart-phones which the study had established to be the main means through which they acquire their information literacy skills. Other sources such as the library and training organised by the state government have not benefited them. The result established that the increase in their information literacy skills status has enhanced their quality of life. Practical implications – An improvement in the information literacy skills status of artisans could positively impact their quality of life. Originality/value – An exploration of the information literacy skills status, medium for the acquisition of the skills and the impacts on the quality of life of artisans in Lagos has not been carried out before now. This study revealed the status as well as the most accessible and appealing medium of information literacy skills acquisition by the artisans. This will help the government and public library management with the knowledge of the information literacy skills’ needs including, formats and media most suitable for this category of people.

BACKGROUND Quality of life (QoL), physical activity (PA) level and psychological profile (PF) of patients with serious mental illness have been neglected during patient’s management OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of selected psychotropic drugs on the QoL, PA level and PF of patients with serious mental illness METHODS A cross sectional survey involving one hundred and twenty-four subject [62 Serious Mental Illness (SMI) and 62 apparently healthy subjects as control] using purposive and consecutive sampling respectively .Questionnaires for each of the constructs were administered to the participants for data collation. Analysis of the data was done using non parametric inferential statistics of Mann-Whitney U independent test and Spearman’s rho correlation with alpha level set as 0.05. RESULTS Significant difference was recorded in the QoL (p<0.05) of patient with SMI and apparently healthy psychotropic naive participants. There was a significant correlation between the QoL (p<0.05) and PF of participants with SMI. Participants with SMI had significantly lower QoL than apparently healthy psychotropic naive subject. QoL of the healthy psychotropic naive group was better than those of the participants with SMI. Female participants with SMI had higher PA than their male counterparts CONCLUSIONS Psychological profiles of male participants with SMI were lower than male healthy psychotropic naive participants. Clinicians should take precaution to monitor the QoL, PA level and PF because the constructs are relevant in evaluation of treatment outcome.

Background:Behçet’s Disease (BD) is a chronic, inflammatory, rheumatic disease that is characterized by mucocutaneous lesions and can be seen major organ involvement such as eyes, musculoskeletal system, gastrointestinal system and central nervous system. Impaired quality of life, aerobic capacity, respiratory function and life satisfaction, sleep disorders, depression, anxiety and fatigue are seen commonly in BD patients like the other rheumatic diseases. Considering that regular physical activity effects survival for patients and healthy people, it is important to determine the factors affecting physical activity level and exercise barriers. Objectives:The aim of this study is to investigate physical activity level and exercise barriers in patients with BD.Methods:45 patients were included in the study. Physical activity level, exercise barriers, fatigue, depression, pain, quality of life and aerobic capacity were evaluated with International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), Exercise Barriers and Benefits Scale (EBBS), Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Visual Analog Scale (VAS), Behçet’s Disease Quality of Life Questionnaire (BDQoL) and 6 minutes walk test, respectively. Spaerman’s Correlation Coefficient were used to investigate the relationships between exercise barriers and other parameters. Results:IPAQ demonstrated that 22 (48.8%) of the patients had low level physical activitiy. Additionally, physical activity levels significantly correlated with both exercise barriers (rho= -0.345) and exercise benefits (rho= 0.320) (p<0.05). BDQoL scores also correlated significantly with exercise barrier scores (rho= 0.338), (p<0.05). No significant relationships were observed for other parameters. Conclusion:Exercise and physical activity are of great importance because of its positive contribution to the musculoskeletal system for BD patients’ rehabilitation. Thinking of negative effects of physical inactivity, patients with Behçet disease should be encouraged to exercise. Also, reasons of physical inactivity should be investigated and treated.References:[1]Ilhan B, Can M, Alibaz-Oner F, Yilmaz-Oner S, Polat-Korkmaz O, Ozen G et al.
