The paper describes the influence of power electronics, energy processing, and emergency radio systems (ERS) immunity testing on onboard aircraft equipment and ground stations providing air traffic services. The implementation of next-generation power electronics introduces potential hazards for the safety and reliability of aircraft systems, especially the interferences from power electronics with high-power processing. The paper focuses on clearly identifying, experimentally verifying, and quantifiably measuring the effects of power electronics processing using switching modes versus the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) of emergency radio systems with electromagnetic interference (EMI). EMI can be very critical when switching power radios utilize backup receivers, which are used as aircraft backup systems or airport last-resort systems. The switching power electronics process produces interfering electromagnetic energy to create problems with onboard aircraft radios or instrument landing system (ILS) avionics services. Analyses demonstrate significant threats and risks resulting from interferences between radio and power electronics in airborne systems. Results demonstrate the impact of interferences on intermediate-frequency processing, namely, for very high frequency (VHF) radios. The paper also describes the methodology of testing radio immunity against both weak and strong signals in accordance with recent aviation standards and guidance for military radio communication systems in the VHF band.

AbstractHere, an engineered tunneling layer enhanced photocurrent multiplication through the impact ionization effect was proposed and experimentally demonstrated on the graphene/silicon heterojunction photodetectors. With considering the suitable band structure of the insulation material and their special defect states, an atomic layer deposition (ALD) prepared wide-bandgap insulating (WBI) layer of AlN was introduced into the interface of graphene/silicon heterojunction. The promoted tunneling process from this designed structure demonstrated that can effectively help the impact ionization with photogain not only for the regular minority carriers from silicon, but also for the novel hot carries from graphene. As a result, significantly enhanced photocurrent as well as simultaneously decreased dark current about one order were accomplished in this graphene/insulation/silicon (GIS) heterojunction devices with the optimized AlN thickness of ~15 nm compared to the conventional graphene/silicon (GS) devices. Specifically, at the reverse bias of −10 V, a 3.96-A W−1 responsivity with the photogain of ~5.8 for the peak response under 850-nm light illumination, and a 1.03-A W−1 responsivity with ∼3.5 photogain under the 365 nm ultraviolet (UV) illumination were realized, which are even remarkably higher than those in GIS devices with either Al2O3 or the commonly employed SiO2 insulation layers. This work demonstrates a universal strategy to fabricate broadband, low-cost and high-performance photo-detecting devices towards the graphene-silicon optoelectronic integration.

Switching devices based on wide band gap materials as SiC oer a signicant perfor- mance improvement on the switch level compared to Si devices. A well known example are SiC diodes employed e.g. in PFC converters. In this paper, the impact on the system level perfor- mance, i.e. eciency/power density, of a PFC and of a DC-DC converter resulting with the new SiC devices is evaluated based on analytical optimisation procedures and prototype systems. There, normally-on JFETs by SiCED and normally-off JFETs by SemiSouth are considered.

The purpose of this research was to study the impact of project-based learning and information and communication technologies on students’ motivation. Two second-year classes in electrical engineering at the University Tahri Mohamed in Béchar, Algeria, were involved in the study. The experiment compared the level to which one class of students mastered goals without the use of information and communication technologies, to the mastery achieved by a second class which participated in a tutorial that has a technological tool built into the project-based approach. The subject of power electronics was chosen for this study because of its different knowledge, which is strongly represented in difficult learning contents for students. A questionnaire about motivation was used to collect data within an experimental research plan. After three months of conducting the study, the results demonstrated that the integration of the tutorial with the project-based approach is likely to increase students’ motivation to learn and to master the subject of power electronics.

In the paper the results of an experimental program intended to determine factors influencing the impact resistance of the External Thermal Insulation Composite Systems (ETICS) were presented. For the research the systems based on polystyrene have been chosen. The insulation material was faced with a rendering consisting of base coat reinforced with standard or armored glass fibre mesh and silicone or silicone-silicate binders as finishing coats. The influence of various renderings components was evaluated with respect to resistance to hard body impact and resistance to hail. The test results were discussed in the context of the possible impact level on ETICS in use.

Abstract Multifunctional Structures for Attitude Control (MSAC) is a new spacecraft attitude control system that utilizes deployable panels as multifunctional intelligent structures to provide both fine pointing and large slew attitude control. Previous studies introduced MSAC design and operation concepts, simulation-based design studies, and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) validation of a simplified prototype. In this article, we expand the scope of design studies to include individual compliant piezo-electric actuators and associated power electronics. This advance is a step toward high-fidelity MSAC system operation, and reveals new design insights for further performance enhancement. Actuators are designed using pseudo rigid body dynamic models (PRBDMs), and are validated for steady-state and step responses against Finite Element Analysis. The drive electronics model consists of a few distinct topologies that will be used to evaluate system performance for given mechanical and control system designs. Subsequently, a high-fidelity multiphysics multibody MSAC system model, based on the validated compliant actuators and drive electronics, is developed to support implementation of MSAC Control Co-design optimization studies. This model will be used to demonstrate the impact of including the power electronics design in the Optimal Control Co-Design domain. The different control trajectories are compared for slew rates and the vibrational jitter introduced to the satellite. The results from this work will be used to realize closed-loop control trajectories that have minimal jitter introduction while providing high slew rates.
