AbstractWe have developed a detailed siphon flow model for coronal loops. We find scaling laws relating the characteristic parameters of the loop, explore systematically the space of solutions and show that supersonic flows are impossible for realistic values of heat flux at the base of the upflowing leg.

Abstract: In order to reveal the dissolution behavior of iron tailings in blast furnace slag, we studied the main component of silica in iron tailings. First, edge contour features need to be established to represent the melting process of silica. We choose shape, perimeter, area and generalized radius as objects. By independently analyzing the influence of these four indexes on the melting rate, the area and shape were selected as the characteristic parameters of the edge contour of the silica particles. Then, the actual melting rate of the silica is estimated by the edge contour feature index. Finally, we can calculate the melting rate of the first second of three time periods of 0.00010312mm3/s,0.0002399mm3/s,0.0000538mm3/s.

The paper evaluates the effectiveness of the use of graphene nanostructures in the purification of lead (II) ions to improve the ecological situation of water bodies. The mechanisms and characteristic parameters of the adsorption process were analyzed using empirical models of isotherms at temperatures of 298, 303, 313 and 323 K, which correspond to the following order (based on the correlation coefficient): Langmuir (0.99) > Temkin (0.97) > Dubinin – Radushkevich (0.90). The maximum adsorption capacity of the material corresponds to the range from 230 to 260 mg/g. We research the equilibrium at the level of thermodynamic parameter estimates, which indicates the spontaneity of the process, the endothermic nature and structure change of graphene modified with phenol-formaldehyde resin during the adsorption of lead (II) ions, leading to an increase in the disorder of the system.

This paper presents experimental and analytical results focusing on the strain limit of X80 linepipe. Ductile crack growth behavior from a girth weld notch is simulated by FE analysis based on a proposed damage model and is compared with the experimental results. The simulation model for ductile crack growth accompanied by penetration through the wall thickness consists of two criteria. One is a criterion for ductile crack initiation from the notch-tip, which is described by the plastic strain at the notch tip, because the onset of ductile cracking can be expressed by constant plastic strain independent of the shape and size of the components and the loading mode. The other is a damage-based criterion for simulating ductile crack extension associated with damage evolution influenced by plastic strain in accordance with the stress triaxiality ahead of the extending crack tip. The proposed simulation model is applicable to prediction of ductile crack growth behaviors from a circumferentially-notched girth welded pipe with high internal pressure, which is subjected to tensile loading or bending (post-buckling) deformation.

A low-cost and high-speed electro-optic (EO) switch using the guest–host EO material Disperse Red 1/Polymethyl Methacrylate (DR1/PMMA) was designed and fabricated. The DR1/PMMA material presented a low processing cost, an excellent photostability and a large EO coefficient of 13.1 pm/V. To improve the performance of the switch, the in-plane buried electrode structure was introduced in the polymer Mach–Zehnder waveguide to improve the poling and modulating efficiency. The characteristic parameters of the waveguide and the electrodes were carefully designed and the fabrication process was strictly controlled. Under 1550 nm, the insertion loss of the device was 12.7 dB. The measured switching rise time and fall time of the switch were 50.00 ns and 54.29 ns, respectively.

A human-machine shared steering control is presented in this paper for tracking large-curvature path, considering uncertainties of driver’s steering characteristics. A driver-vehicle-road (DVR) model is proposed in which uncertain characteristic parameters are defined to describe the human driver’s steering behaviors in tracking large-curvature path. Then the radial basis function neural network (RBF) is used to estimate parameters of different drivers’ characteristics and to obtain the boundaries of these parameters. Parameter uncertainties of the driver’s steering characteristics and time-varying vehicle speed of the DVR model are handled with the Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy logic. And these parameter uncertainties are considered in the design of the shared steering controller. Then based on the DVR model, a T-S fuzzy full-order dynamic compensator with D-pole assignment is designed to assist driver’s steering for tracking path with large curvature. Simulation results show that the proposed controller can provide individual levels of steering assistance in path following according to driver’s proficiency, and can improve driving comfort significantly.

This paper proposed a novel method for leaf classification and recognition. In the method, the moment invariant and fractal dimension were regarded as the characteristic parameters of the plant leaf. In order to extract the representative characteristic parameters, pretreatment of the leaf images, including RGB-gray converting, image binarization and leafstalk removing. The extracted leaf characteristic parameters were further utilized as training sets to train the neural networks. The proposed method was proved effectively to reach a recognition rate about 92% for most of the testing leaf samples

In this manuscript an improved sorbent based on modified exfoliated carbon nanoplatelets, applied in the removal of ammonium from aqueous samples, is presented. This sorbent showed better efficiency in comparison with the previous one obtained in our group for ammonium removal, the values of the maximum sorption capacity being improved from 10 to 12.04 mg/g. In terms of kinetics and sorption characteristic parameters, their values were also improved. Based on these results, a sorption mechanism was proposed, taking into account ion-exchange and chemisorption processes at the surface of the oxidized exfoliated carbon nanoplatelets. Future applications for simultaneous removal of other positive charged contaminants from natural waters might be possible.
