The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of an intervention aimed at the enhancing of undergraduate students in emergency situations and to identify the factors related to the acquisition of participants’ knowledge and skills. This was an intervention study using a convenience sample of 424 students from different campuses of a public university in the interior of São Paulo State, Brazil. Theoretical learning was assessed using pre-test and post-test multiple-choice questions, and skills in basic life support were assessed via simulation using a mannequin, immediate feedback devices and a checklist. The mean knowledge score attained was 15.1 (SD±3.50) on the pre-test and20.9 (SD±3.20) on the post-test (p< 0.001). Regarding basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation skills, the mean scores before and after the training were 36.3(SD=±5.3) and178 (SD± 28.3) respectively (p< 0.001). Age was associated with an increase in knowledge and skills’ score when comparing before and after training scores (p=0.0000). The practical basic life support training intervention received an assessment of 75.4%from students of all areas. The training intervention contributed to improvement in both knowledge of care in emergency situations and basic life support skills. Age was the only factor that independently influenced the development of learning and psychomotor skills.

Background: Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest is an important cause that leads to hospital admission and death. Improving lay people’s knowledge and skills in basic life support (BLS) may lead to reduced death associated with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. “BLS NU KKU” is a BLS training program developed from up-to-date literature as a smartphone application used to train lay people in the community. Objective: To evaluate BLS-related knowledge and skills of participants before and after BLS training. Materials and Methods: A one group pretest-posttest design was used to implement the present study in Khon Kaen, Thailand. Participants were 350 individuals age 18 and older. An 8-hour BLS training session was offered to 10 groups of 35 participants over the period of 10 months between November 2018 and August 2019. Self-administered questionnaires were used to assess BLS knowledge and Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills. Results: The mean score for BLS-related knowledge significantly increased after the BLS training (mean = 15.05, SD = 2.51) compared to the scores before the training (mean = 10.47, SD = 3.43) (p<0.05). BLS skills improved from 0% to 100% (p<0.001) will all skills rated with mostly “excellent” and “good”. Satisfaction with the training program was also rated mostly with “excellent” and “good”. Conclusion: The BLS training program effectively improved participants’ knowledge and skills for basic life support. This program should be disseminated to train lay people in other settings. Introduction: Cardiac arrest is one of the leading public health problems worldwide and in Brazil. A victim of cardiorespiratory arrest needs prompt basic life support (BLS) to increase survival. Objective: To evaluate the performance of a synthesis lecture on BLS given to university students in Health Sciences. Methods: A total of 422 undergraduate students in Nursing, Physiotherapy, and Medicine participated in this study. Data were collected by applying a pre-test through a BLS questionnaire based on the American Heart Association guidelines. Results: Students obtained a minimum grade of 40% of the pre-test questions. The score increased to 75% in the post-test; the students with the best performance in the pre-test maintained a higher total number of correct answers in the post-test. There was also better performance in those with previous training in BLS. The students from the first year of medical school were the ones who benefited the most from the lecture. Conclusion: Regardless of the grade course, the Health Science students showed a significant improvement in their level of knowledge after attending the synthesis lecture, indicating its adequacy to promote initial learning about BLS.

Background: Recent developments both in terms of science, population density, modern lifestyle, increased activity, congestion in terms of transportation and so on have a real impact on life in society. One impact that is not recognized is less concerned about the risks of these developments. Where this makes individuals vulnerable to a disease and other threats. One of them is a heart attack, the number of accidents has increased, so there is a risk of trauma, even resulting in cardiac arrest and stopping breathing. In line with this, first aid in emergency conditions really needs to be known by all people. So we need a guide for the flow of help, which is currently with algoritma basic life support AHA 2017. Community service goals: The community understands the flow or algorithm of first aid for people with cardiac arrest and respiratory arrest. Methods: In the implementation using question and answer lecture and demonstration models, with the module learning media. Pre-test and post-test is done by asking questions. Results: There is a difference in the results of the correct answer before and after the socialization of the AHA 2017 basic life support algorithm. The increase is between 3 and 6. Conclusion: After socialization of basic life support algorithm AHA 2017 knowledge  increased.

The ScienceReady preparatory course is an intensive study designed to improve beginning university undergraduate students’ understanding of medical/scientific concepts, and reduce their anxiety about studying the science component of their enrolled programs. Its goals are to stimulate students’ science curiosity and provide the fundamental scientific content they are expected to know and build further on the knowledge that will feature in their upcoming programs. This article aims to describe the ScienceReady course, discuss the impact of the course on the participants, determine the relationship of the course with self-efficacy, and explain the implications of the results. Students were tested before and after the course to ascertain whether it increased or decreased or not affected self-efficacy. The results of the pre- and post-test surveys were unequivocal. The majority of the individual items for the self-efficacy questionnaire showed a significant increase in self-efficacy post-course.

Poor awareness among medical graduates about basic life support (BLS) is a matter of great concern. The presence of a trained rescuer is the key determinant of ultimate survival from life-threatening emergencies. To achieve this goal, early exposure to such life-saving skills is the right decision to foster these skills for medical students, which can be reenforced in succeeding years. Forty-two first-year medical students participated in this study. The entire procedure consisted of faculty training, assessment of knowledge of students by a pretest questionnaire, a lecture, a demonstration, and hands-on training using a mannequin (with special emphasis on the site, depth, rate, and sustainment of uninterrupted chest compressions). Posttest 1 was conducted to assess the knowledge gained. The retention of knowledge and skills in the second year was evaluated by posttest 2 and directly observed procedural skills, respectively. Student feedback was collected on five-point Likert scale. Analysis using a Freidman test indicated the mean rank for posttest 1 (2.81) to be significantly higher than the pretest (1.26), indicating a gain in knowledge. The mean rank for posttest 2 (1.93) was lower than for posttest 1 (2.81) but was significantly higher compared with the pretest (1.26), indicating a significant retention of knowledge during the second year. Directly observed procedural skill evaluation showed that 7% students could perform all the seven steps correctly and that 74% students could perform three or more steps correctly, signifying a good retention of skill. Two students taught BLS skills to their family members as well. The results of this study suggest that the program provides students with sound basic knowledge and adequate practical skills in BLS.

Abstract Funding Acknowledgements Type of funding sources: None. Background Sudden cardiac death is one of the main issues worldwide, with more than 700.000 deaths annually. It is strongly believed that the implementation of "Kids Save Lives" project in schools can change this situation. The Kids Save Lives initiative, endorsed by the World Health Organization in 2015, is teaching school children worldwide about the importance of CPR and how to perform it. In Greece this project is a suggestion of Ministry of Education to schools. Purpose Τo evaluate the level of theoretical knowledge, willingness to perform Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and active skills of Greek secondary school students on the subject of Basic life Support before and after a "Kids Save Lives" program. Material – Method: Data collection took place on the academic periods of 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 and was performed in secondary schools of Thessaly’s region. A total of 5092 students (51,9% female, mean age 14.2 years) participated on the "Kids save Lives" program according to the European Resuscitation Council (ERC) and World Health Organization (WHO) statement. A 12 point questionnaire was answered by the students before and after completing the "kid saves lives" program, while practical skills were evaluated on manikins by experienced ERC Basic Life Support (BLS) Instructors. Results The training improves significantly the theoretical knowledge regarding Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), with the percentage of correct answers being 48,4% and 82,8%,before and after the course respectively (p &lt; 0.001). The participants willingness to perform bystander CPR significantly increased after the completion of the course (93,7% before to 97,4% after, p &lt; 0.001). Almost all of the participants (98.9%) could recognize the correct position near the victim and 91% performed chin lift maneuver and recognized cardiac arrest. More than 90% of the students performed chest compressions with the correct rate and placing their hands on the center of the chest (90,1% and 93.4%, respectively), whereas only 76.1% of the participants achieved the desired compression depth of 5 to 6 cm. Conclusions The overall results strongly recommend that the "Kids Save Lives" program can boost prospects for bystander CPR and indicate the necessity of implementation in a greater scale nationwide.

Aim: Assessment of the increase in knowledge in specific categories among students of the last-year emergency medical students after 45-hour training in advanced paediatric life support. Comparison of the impact of participation in the project and the ILS course on the increase of knowledge in the field of advanced life support in children. Material and methods: 138 third-year emergency medical students of the University of Rzeszów were studied. A proprietary questionnaire on paediatric life support was conducted before and after completing a 45-hour training on emergency medical services in children (pretest/posttest). Results: The mean percentage of subjects’ correct answers in the post-test was slightly over 60 which was statistically significantly higher compared to the pre-test, t(276)=6.54; p<0.001. The highest percentage of correct answers concerned paediatric basic life support and AED (M=77.78; SD=12.47), while the lowest – cardiac arrest in children in special situations (M=60.54; SD=21.06). No statistically significant relationship was found between the percentage of correct answers in the pre-test/post-test and the respondents’ age, gender and participation in a competence development project (p>0.05). Conclusions: The knowledge of paediatric life support among the third year emergency medical students is good. The students of subsequent years and individuals reading the literature and participating in the competence development project are better prepared to perform life support procedures in newborns and infants. From year to year, students gain less knowledge from medical literature and have the least knowledge on cardiac arrest in children in special circumstances.

Introduction: The use of realistic simulation methodology is used in several learning scenarios, allowing students to participate directly in the problematization of situations that require immediate professional action. Objective: To develop, validate and validate a low cost simulator for cardiopulmonary resuscitation and resuscitation procedures in infants. Methods: An experimental study carried out with undergraduate students of the 1st year of the Nursing course at a higher education institution in the State of Paraíba, developed a simulator model with dimensions similar to an infant with low cost materials and made possible the use as a prototype for Basic Life Support training. The prototype was developed with the accessories for disengagement and cardiopulmonary resuscitation maneuvers. The data collection instrument was a questionnaire based on the American Hearth Association Basic Life Support guideline to enable and validate the Basic Life Support training instrument. Results: The low-cost prototype for Basic Life Support training was used as a learning object adequately and enabled the teaching-learning process as an accessible resource at low cost. Based on the questionnaire applied, we observed that there was an increase in the median number of correct answers and a reduction in the median of errors, which indicated an improvement in the acquisition of information and improvement in learning, observed through the test of Signal of Related Samples and the test of the Signs of Wilcoxon, (MA) and errors (ME), before and after training where it was found that there was an increase in MA and a reduction in ME with 5% significance (p <0.001). The frequencies of response modifications after training with the simulator were also studied by means of the two-tailed McNemar test where Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4, Q8, Q9, Q13 and Q15 questions showed significant changes (p <0, 05). Conclusion: A prototype was developed that simulated the training activity in Basic Life Support, which made it possible to carry out the procedures appropriately in positioning and simulation of cardiac resuscitation, mouth / nose ventilation, and tapping in the scapular region. Which allowed the validation of disengagement and resuscitation training as a low cost alternative for health education.

Korban henti jantung bisa dialami oleh siapapun dan kapanpun tanpa mengenal tempat kejadian. Salah satu faktor penyebab tingginnya kematian akibat henti jantung adalah terlambatnya pertolongan yang diberikan kepada korban segera setelah henti jantung. Mayoritas kasus henti jantung terjadi di pra-Rumah Sakit, mencapai 72%. Pengetahuan dan ketrampilan orang awam yang baik, meningkatkan angka kelangsungan hidup korban henti jantung sebelum mendapatkan penanganan lanjutan di Rumah Sakit. Relawan adalah orang atau tim yang paling sering menjumpai kejadian henti jantung dan korban tidak sadar ketika melakukan pencarian dan evakuasi korban. Tujuan dilakukan pengabdian masyarakat ini untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan dan ketrampilan relawan bencana. Proses pengabdian masyarakat ini terdiri dari edukasi dan praktik dengan materi bantuan hidup dasar. Perubahan kognitif sebelum dan sesudah edukasi dievaluasi menggunakan pertanyaan, dengan nilai rata-rata 35 menjadi 85. Peserta sangat antusias dalam mengikuti program edukasi bantuan hidup dasar. Pengabdian masyarakat dengan memberikan pengetahuan untuk meningkatkan ketrampilan relawan dalam memberikan pertolongan kepada korban tidak sadar. Tindak lanjut dari pengabdian masyarakat ini yaitu membuat tim relawan kolaborasi dengan medis untuk menangani kasus medis diluar Rumah Sakit Kata kunci: bantuan hidup dasar; ketrampilan; pengetahuan; relawan bencana IMPROVEMENT OF KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS BASIC LIFE ASSISTANCE IN DISASTER VOLUNTEERS ABSTRACT Victims of cardiac arrest can be experienced by anyone and at any time without knowing the scene. One of the factors causing the high death due to cardiac arrest is the late help given to victims immediately after cardiac arrest. The majority of cases of cardiac arrest occur in pre-hospital, reaching 72%. Good knowledge and skills of lay people, increase the survival rate of victims of cardiac arrest before getting further treatment at the Hospital. Volunteers are the people or teams that most often encounter cardiac arrest and the victim is unconscious when searching and evacuating victims. The purpose of this community service is to increase the knowledge and skills of disaster volunteers. This community service process consists of education and practice with basic life support materials. Cognitive changes before and after education were evaluated using questions, with an average score of 35 to 85. Participants were very enthusiastic in participating in the basic life support education program. Community service by providing knowledge to improve volunteer skills in providing assistance to unconscious victims. Follow-up from this community service is to create a team of volunteers collaborating with the medical to handle medical cases outside the hospital.
