Two correlations are developed (for which there is precedent in the literature) interrelating the many process variables for adequate design of a flash stage. Both correlations are based on the Colburn factor, jm, for mass transfer. These correlations were determined from experimental data obtained from American Machine and Foundry Co. (AMF) in Connecticut and another model by Baldwin-Lima Hamilton (BLH) in Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina.

The paper presents results obtained by processing a series of published experimental data on heat and mass transfer during evaporation of pure liquids from the free board of a liquid film into the turbulent gas phone. The data has been processed on the basis of the earlier theory of mechanism of heat and mass transfer. In spite of the fact that this process exhibits a strong Stefan's flow, the results indicate that with a proper definition of the driving forces the agreement between theory and experiment is very good.

The paper deals with the mass transfer in a liquid on a plate with mobile packing. A procedure has been suggested which enables estimation of the mass transfer coefficients from experimental data considering the dispersion flow of the liquid. The results obtained from the desorption of CO2 from water are presented graphically and in the form of empirical equation.

This paper is devoted to the development of a new method for estimating mass transfer coefficients and effective area in packed columns in the case of reactive absorption. The method is based on a plug-flow model of reactive absorption of carbon dioxide with sodium hydroxide solution. The parameter estimation problem is solved using an optimization technique. Some mass transfer parameters are found to be correlated. Global sensitivity analysis by Sobol's technique showed that the unit model with the defined objective function is sensitive to the estimated parameter. Case studies of reactive absorption with different packings illustrate application of the proposed method for estimating mass transfer coefficients and effective area from column operation data. The model calculations are compared with experimental data obtained by other authors. The concentration profiles calculated by the unit model with the estimated parameters are shown to match well with experimental profiles from literature. A good agreement between estimated values and experimental data from literature confirms the applicability of this method.

AbstractReactivity, or the phenomenon by which subjects tend to modify their behavior in virtue of their being studied upon, is often cited as one of the most important difficulties involved in social scientific experiments, and yet, there is to date a persistent conceptual muddle when dealing with the many dimensions of reactivity. This paper offers a conceptual framework for reactivity that draws on an interventionist approach to causality. The framework allows us to offer an unambiguous definition of reactivity and distinguishes it from placebo effects. Further, it allows us to distinguish between benign and malignant forms of the phenomenon, depending on whether reactivity constitutes a danger to the validity of the causal inferences drawn from experimental data.

The method of increments is a wavefunction-based ab initio correlation method for solids, which explicitly calculates the many-body wavefunction of the system. After a Hartree-Fock treatment of the infinite system the correlation energy of the solid is expanded in terms of localised orbitals or of a group of localised orbitals. The method of increments has been applied to a great variety of materials with a band gap, but in this paper the extension to metals is described. The application to solid mercury is presented, where we achieve very good agreement of the calculated ground-state properties with the experimental data.

The paper deals with experimental data regarding the effect of internal and external factors on the corrosion decay of Zr1Nb alloy fuel elements. Based on the analysis results, losses of zirconium that transfers to oxide or coolant as per the fuel element wall weight and thickness as well as economic losses from their corrosion decay have been theoretically calculated. To avoid a state-level emergency occurrence, an increase in the fuel element wall thickness up to 660 μm is proposed, which can increase the operating life under the conditions of trouble-free coolant mass transfer hydrodynamic mode.

This essay investigates Harriet Beecher Stowe's interpolation of State v. Mann, a harsh 1829 North Carolina proslavery decision, into her 1856 novel Dred: A Tale of the Great Dismal Swamp. The essay argues that Stowe's use of State v. Mann continues a conversation about slavery that had been carried on through its text for many years in abolitionist writings. Bringing State v. Mann's circulation history into view shows Stowe engaging the antislavery establishment as well as the legal system, borrowing and imitating its techniques for handling proslavery materials. If her novel is infiltrated and structured by the many legal writings that it assimilates, its fictive world in turn infiltrates, interprets, and alters the significance of the writings she employs, so that proslavery legal writings are made to testify strongly against the slave system that they originally worked to maintain and enforce. Stowe's hybrid text dominates the law while smoothly assimilating it into an interpretive fictive context. Simultaneously, Stowe's typographical cues remind readers of State v. Mann's ongoing, destructive extratextual legal existence. By linking fictive context to legal content, Stowe's novel suggests that slave law must be read and interpreted as a unit that includes the individual suffering it imposes. Misreading State v. Mann as revealing its author's belief in the immorality of slavery, Stowe constructs a fictional judge who upholds slave law despite his personal beliefs. By absorbing, imitating, and besting the strategies and the reach of both legal and abolitionist writings, Dred implicitly stakes a claim for the superior power of political fiction to act in the world.

As an advanced cooling scheme to meet increasingly stringent combustor cooling requirements, multihole film cooling has received considerable attention. Experimental data of this cooling scheme are limited in the open literature in terms of different hole patterns and blowing ratios. The heat-mass transfer analogy method was employed to measure adiabatic film cooling effectiveness of three multihole patterns. Three hole patterns differed in streamwise row spacing (S), spanwise hole pitch (P), and hole inclination angle (α), with the first pattern S∕P=2 and α=30°, the second S∕P=1 and α=30°, and the third S∕P=2 and α=150°. Measurements were performed at different blow ratios (M=1-4). Streamwise coolant injection offers high cooling protection for downstream rows. Reverse coolant injection provides superior cooling protection for initial rows. The effect of blowing ratio on cooling effectiveness is small for streamwise injection but significant for reversion injection.

During the past few years an extensive amount of experimental data on split flaps has been made available to the aircraft industry, through the publications of aeronautical research laboratories, both in this country and abroad. In general, each publication deals with one particular aspect of the problem, and when the effect of wing flaps on the performance of an aircraft is being estimated a certain amount of difficulty may be experienced in deciding which of the many reports available gives results most readily applicable to the case being considered ; and what allowances, if any, should be made for wing taper, flap cut-out, fuselage, etc.In this report the available data has been analysed with a view to answering these questions, and presented in such a form that it may be readily applied to determine the most probable change in the aerodynamic characteristics of a wing that may be expected from the use of this type of flap.From the appendix an estimate of the accuracy of the method can be obtained, as a comparison with full-scale data is given for lift and drag, and for the other flap characteristics the original curves have been reproduced.
